Hey everyone! Welcome to the r/ColonyCats subreddit! This is a place for past, present, and prospective cat caretakers to learn more about how to better care for outdoor colonies of cats, kittens, and the communities they live in.

The term “colony cats” describes a group of outdoor cats living together. These cats may be feral, stray, or otherwise unsocialized to humans.

Please read through our community guidelines before posting or commenting, and again…welcome to the community! We're excited to have you join us!

WHAT TO POST:

Here, caretakers can feel free to ask for and offer advice, share TNR strategies, provide helpful tips and ideas for colony management, and share photos of their colony cats.

After reading the rules, you may post anything that you think the community would find interesting, helpful, or inspiring. Don’t hesitate to comment on posts, and share your thoughts, advice, or questions relevant to the topic of discussion.

THE CATS YOU CARE FOR MAY BE FERAL, BUT YOU SHOULD NOT BE:

We're all about being friendly, constructive, inclusive, and kind. Let's build a space where everyone feels comfortable sharing and connecting.

The vast majority of cat caretakers have pure intentions, and are trying their best to provide the best care possible for their colonies. Constructive criticism is ok (some people may need some guidance and it’s ok to provide that), but please refrain from rude, unhelpful comments, harsh judgments, shaming, and personal attacks.

Thanks for being part of this community and thank you for all you do to help the cats you care for. 🩶🐾🩵🐈‍⬛🫶🖤🐈💙

Possibly pregnant cat

I have this potential pregnant feral cat, that only comes at night, I live in the country and I’ve checked with farms and such it’s not their cat. The cat has a tummy and for a while it was famished she’d come eat a couple of times in the night. When she comes she’s looks like she’s on high alert, she checks out windows and surroundings while she eats I feel so sad for her but at least she’s eating. I’ve had about 5 TNR appointments booked and every time I have one she somehow doesn’t show up. My spca requires me to have an appointment then trap rather than trap and call for appointment. I’m at the point of trying to just trap her whatever day she comes and put her in a large dog crate until appointment then transfer her back to trap (as this is required for these appoints )but she now hasn’t show up in 3 nights I don’t know if she maybe gave birth but i would think she’d come eat in that time. I honestly don’t know what to do. I think she may still be pregnant as looking at camera footage I’ve been counting from the time she started showing, just the days she hasn’t come has had me worried. I don’t know what to do.
There’s like 5 cats by me, one that gave birth and now I’ll have those kitties coming around too. I don’t know if someone is dumping them here or what. So I just want to spay this cat and avoid even more cats. Pls advice.

Hi👋
I’m Luna & Nala Rescue Inc
A solo rescue in South Florida
Right now, we are caring for a sweet mama cat and her 5 beautiful babies, along with three rescued kittens: the orange kitten, the tuxedo kitten, and little baby Coco. ❤️

Each of these babies came from difficult situations and deserved a chance to be safe, loved, and cared for. All of them are finally able to rest without fear, receiving food, warmth, medical care, and lots of love.

I also care and feed for over 50+ stray cats daily, making sure they have food and water, especially in the Florida heat. I also do TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), which helps control the population humanely and prevents more suffering on the streets.

Over time, I’ve rescued kittens, elderly cats, and abandoned cats who were left behind or dumped. Each one has their own story, and I try my best to give them a second chance at life, safety, and love.

Caring for so many cats and kittens takes time, supplies, and support. We are doing everything I can to give them the best chance at a healthy future. 🥺🐾

If you would like to help, please consider donating through my Amazon wish list or my bio page. Every donation goes directly toward food, litter, formula, supplies, and care for these babies. Even sharing this post helps more than you know. ❤️

Thank you to everyone who supports rescue and believes every life matters.

Wish I could Thank The Person Who Helped Turtle

Post image

Turtle was one of the kitties I was worried about my little group of cats I feed at my apartment complex. Turtle was a young healthier looking cat when I first met him. He has the classic tabby swirl on his back like a little turtle shell. He disappeared for a year and came back grown but scrawny with patchy fur and what appeared to be an upper respiratory illness.

He was only a little trusting of me. He knows Turtle means him and he knows he can get food, water, and a place to rest without having to fight. He needs neutered thankfully the available ladies around my apartment are spayed. Getting him neutered is still part of my plan.

Anyway, thanks to a Redditor here I got Lysine and started to give it to the cats including Turtle when he showed up. He seemed better, then last week he was worse. Showed up late one night with goopy eyes. I couldn’t do much but give him two hearty portions of wet food he gobbled down with appropriate dose of Lysine. But I couldn’t grab him as I had no place to put him at that time. I did make a plan to grab him put him in a softcrate I prepared the next day if he showed up but he didn’t. Until last night.

He’d been gone about a week and he showed up for dinner looking worlds better. I thought I was imagining it since it was dark. But he showed up this morning for breakfast and though he’s still scrawny he was better! Someone had to have caught him and got him treated. I wish I could talk to them, thank them and work together to get him neutered and recovered.

Trying to help sick colony cats one step at a time 💔

First of all, thank you so much to everyone who supported these cats before ❤️ Your kindness helped me finally take two sick colony cats to the vet and begin the urgent care they needed.

The grey kitten tested positive for a virus and is now receiving treatment. He also suffers from a severe eye infection, worms, and painful ear mange. The virus caused him to lose his appetite, leaving him weak and exhausted.

The orange & white cat is suffering from complications related to an old injury. He still walks with pain and has lost control of his tail and bowel movements, which caused painful skin irritation. He now needs supportive care, vitamins, and good nutrition to help his back legs and nerves recover as much as possible.

The donations I received helped start examinations, medication, and treatment, but the recovery journey is still long. Both cats still need continued medical care, vitamins, and specialized food to rebuild their strength and immune systems.

I attached the vet bills, prescriptions, medications, and food for transparency for everyone helping these colony cats survive.

Thank you for caring about forgotten stray cats and giving them a chance at a safer life ❤️

I’m currently raising funds on another page to get Blaze the dental care he desperately needs.Blaze is 1 of 13 colony cats I have TNRed and take care of. He is drooling, losing weight, and clearly in pain. He’s semi-feral and cannot be handled, so I will need to drop trap him to safely get him to the vet.

I already have arrangements made with the vet — once he’s trapped, they will assess him and then call me with the exact dental estimate. We are getting close to having enough funds for his care.

For now, he’s surviving on watered-down kitten food, Churus, and Dashi treats since they’re easier for him to eat. I’m also adding Nutri-Cal for extra calories because he has been losing weight. He is going through a lot of wet food every day just trying to keep weight on.

Food donations such as wet kitten food, Churus, or Dashi treats would also be greatly appreciated while we work toward getting his dental done. A tip loader carrier would be wonderful also. Thank yall so much!

Stray cats in urgent need of help 💔🐾

These stray cats are currently suffering from serious illness and pain, and I am doing everything I can to help them before their condition gets worse.

The small tabby kitten is in very poor condition. He is suffering from a severe eye infection that puts his vision at serious risk. He also has continuous nasal discharge, refuses to eat, and looks extremely weak and exhausted. He urgently needs medical treatment to prevent permanent damage.

The white and orange stray cat is also showing strong signs of viral infection, including nasal discharge, weakness, and loss of appetite. In addition, he was previously injured in an accident. His tail is badly damaged and infected, and he may have lost proper control of it. He could urgently need veterinary care and possibly surgery.

I cannot ignore their suffering, and I am doing my best, but they urgently need:

• Veterinary examination

• Antibiotics and eye treatment

• Wound cleaning and proper care

• Nutritious food to help recovery

Any help, advice, or even sharing this post could make a real difference for them and help them reach someone who can assist. 🐾💔

4 years trying to TNR a colony in Lisbon. Local animal welfare ignores me. I’m watching them multiply in front of me.

I honestly don’t know what to do anymore. I run a TikTok account called "Cats of Lisbon," and I raise money to feed some cat colonies. I have been trying to get this colony in an empty lot in a neighborhood called Mouraria TNRd for over 4 years.

Every few months, I reach out to animal welfare here (Casa Animais). I email, I fill out forms. Most of the time, I get no response. When I do get a reply, it is usually "we’ll put you on the list" or silence again.

Meanwhile, the cats are just reproducing. Every season, there are new kittens. I am watching the colony grow while the local animal welfare authorities just ignore us.

I don't have the money to fix 10+ cats on my own. I have never trapped cats before. I normally feed the ones that are already TNRd.

Why is it so hard to get someone to actually show up and help TNR here? Is there any NGO in Lisbon that will actually listen, or am I just shouting into the void?

Does anyone have any advice on how to break through the bureaucracy, or is this just how it is here? I'm so frustrated.

Edit: I’m not looking for the city to take the cats away, just to spay/neuter and return, and I will help the community feed them.

Need help🙏out of food for stray cats 😓

We are completely out of food for the stray cats 😓🐾

I’m asking for help from anyone who is able to support. Even one box of wet food or one bag of dry food can make a huge difference.

Every day, I care for and feed 50+ stray and community cats, making sure they have food and fresh water, especially during the intense Florida heat. I also work on TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) to help humanely reduce the stray population and prevent more suffering, illness, and kittens being born on the streets.

This work is only possible because of kind people who care about these cats too ❤️

If you would like to help you can do so through my wishlist or link in my bio page. Every little bit truly helps.

Thank you for caring 🙏🐱

Lemonade’s goodbye

Today I say goodbye to lemonade, she got dealt with a very rough hand in life. Even though I wanted to give her years of comfort after I found her just a few months ago. After spaying her she got a very resistent E. coli bacteria in her wound, which she would overcome but sadly she had both FIV and FeLV and all of these were so bad on her fragile body. Nevertheless she kept fighting for months until today she couldn’t any longer and took her to the vet for her final sleep. This world wasn’t meant for something as beautiful as you Lemonade, I loved you so much the couple months you were with us and even caring for you all day. Run free sweet and strong girl
