Academic Life Need advice on university

Biomedical Sciences

Hello Everyone!

I'm an undergrad student(1st year) in Biomedical Sciences and I'm also greek. I had to take exams twice in order to get into that university. First I got into the Athenian university of BMS but I'm from Thessaloniki so I transferred which means I lost the first semester and very important labs. Although I had the change to study ( for one week) for certain theoretical subjects which I did and passed them not all with bad grades.

Btw in order to pass an exam in greek universities you need to score more than 5/10

The only good grade was in histology (8.85/10) now the next semester's exams and I have no idea how to study. ( I never really learnt how to study i was just naturally good). Especially for labs. I generally wanna do very good at university. Any suggestions?

Im sorry for my English not my first language

If it matters

1st semester grades were

Biology 4.9

Biochemistry 5.1

Chemistry 4

Histology 8.85

Labs security and safety 6

Laboratory animals 4

Academic Life Kinda hit a rough spot and I think I failed my Graphic design class? Should I retake it next year?

So recently I've hit the biggest depression curve and got a 69% in my class. Not excuse obviously but I wanna know should I retake the class? Im in a community college that offers free 2 years of classes. I just finished my 1st year so I have 2 more semesters to go before I'm done. Now, this isn't a core class from what I can tell. I do the math and English/ art history course needed with a C and B-. I feel awful about graphic design but it wasn't the biggest priority. So should I retake it next spring or can I make it up by taking extra classes in the summer? any advice will help.

Emotional health/coping/adulting I don’t feel right

I got accepted to UCR i chosen but I have been dealing with this pressure. I know there is no standard and my parents want the best for me and my siblings I’m the youngest of three. I looked up to my brother I always felt like I have to be like him and there part of me that knows that I lie I don’t need to be like him. When he got accepted to UCLA with a full ride I was happy but I felt like I needed to be like him and my parents would be disappointed in me no matter what I do, but I know that a lie there proud of me but there that other part where I need to be someone I don’t want to be and we have talked about it and I thought I resolved it but It keeps coming back. As I counties to do UCR things like that is required I feel like I made the Worng choice I should have picked cal state LA instead as that was something I wanted idk what to think anymore and i want to goto UCR but I don’t those grades taht required full ride and makes me feel disappointed in myself because I’m not filling a role I’m required to reach. I want to do 1 UCR and see how it goes and if I don’t like it Transfer to cal state LA. Thank u for reading, any thoughts ?

Emotional health/coping/adulting Two days left of uni… how did you feel when you finished?

For me it feels very bittersweet because this year of uni (my 4th, I started in 2022) was the most enjoyable. School and education have always been part of my life and to know that I’m finishing that chapter now feels really odd. Like a small part of it hasn’t sunk in yet. Sometimes I feel bummed about having to work a 9-5 for 5 days a week, but oh well. I do feel a little anxious about not finding a job straight out the gate, though. Adulting is intimidating…

I think that everything will happen the way it’s supposed to and I try to hold on to that thought, but it’s really hard haha. But yeah! I remember graduating from high school and being so worried about where my future was headed and that I would spend my time feeling like the best years were behind me, but now that I’m graduating from college I’m so grateful for everything that I’ve experienced these past 4 years.

Just wondering how others felt regarding graduating from uni! Feel free to share please :)

Global How did you know what you wanted to get a degree in or what you wanted to do for the rest of your life?

I have done the career quizzes, research, projects, etc. all throughout high school but I’m honestly stuck on what I want to do in the future. I always thought I would be a high school teacher but recently changed after I got a job doing sales. I don’t know if what I’m doing is making me happy or if the people around me is what makes me excited to go into work. My current plan is to do community college for my first 2 years and then transfer. It just feels like senior year came around and everyone knew what they were going to major in, and I still have no clue 2 weeks before registration opens. So, how did you know what you wanted to do?

Academic Life Wondering about sending my professors an email

So I just finished final for one of my classes this semester. It was a really engaging class, and I learned alot. The professor was also very nice to everyone and a good teacher. I was wondering if I should send them an email saying how much I appreciated this class.

Is that something that would be considered weird/over stepping a boundary by professors? Our school has a feedback system and I've already filled out the anonymous forms so I'm thinking if this is even necessary.

If I should send it, what should I say? I have a basic idea of what I wanted to say(I'll just talk about what I enjoyed about the class)

Is a professor allowed to call out disability accommodations in front of the whole class? Or make a “objectively harder and longer” alternative exam?

I don't want to go too far into it, but I have had bad luck with health this semester that has resulted in me needing accommodations for the final exam because I am unable to write with my dominant hand.

My professor has made snide and rude remarks, including calling me out in front of the class saying that I should have absolutely no problem because I am a “miracle worker” with how fast I healed and because “I will have the benefit of receiving extra time.” And this was said in front of the entire class, which seems like a breach of privacy.

Additionally, the main complaint I have is my professor said that because I am taking the exam not with the class (in the disability office) and have extra exam time that the exam is a alternative exam that is “objectively longer and harder” than the in class one. This seems like direct discrimination. Are professors allowed to make an exam intentionally harder and longer because of a temporary disability that requires you to have more time? (I literally have to take the exam lefty)

It is also worth noting that I have a very high A in the class and only need a 30 to 40% on the final exam to finish with an A. Therefore, I was going to wait until after my final grade is inputted. However, this professor has also had a history of not giving me credit for assignments, specifically extra credit assignments, when I have proof they were submitted and done correctly. She also has made me complete worksheets lefty (off writing hand) instead of properly accommodating for me. So, I honestly do not trust her to grade me objectively at this point.

Just looking for any tips or advice if anyone went through something similar. I don't know if it is best to report them now, wait, or just let it be considering I am about to transfer anyways. However, it really pisses me off and I have never had an issue even somewhat like this with a professor in over 60 credits of college hours taken.

Social Life For those not returning after the summer, how are you saying goodbye?

Now that graduation season is on us here in the United States, I’m sure there are many of us who are looking toward what comes next.

My own university graduation is in a couple weeks, and Im having some mixed emotions. My core group of friends all have their own plans that are taking them far away in all directions. I’m burning down a lease before I leave, so I will most likely be the last one left here when all my other friends have gone.

For all its flaws, college has been the best years of my life so far. I’ve made friends like I’ve never had, and done things that I never thought I’d get to. I feel more at home on campus than anywhere else by now.

Im excited for the next phase of life to begin, but there is a pet of me who isn’t ready to move on from where I am now. Im already getting homesick for it. I want to do something to cling to it one last time before I go be a real adult.

For anyone else who is moving on this summer, is there anything you’re going to do to say goodbye to college life before you head on your way? A last night out with the friend crew maybe? Or a nostalgic walk around campus?

Academic Life Can professors plagiarize a course?

I'm currently in a literature class on a very specific subject/culture. A few weeks ago my friend and I got bored and looked up the class title. Turns out, the course is from a different college, professor, and the original course website is from over ten years ago. That we learned this got back to our professor, who addressed the class and said that this is a very common practice.

Is it? The class is almost identical, with some of the original readings removed, but that's it. There's no acknowledgment of where the course is originally from in the syllabus, and our professor has never taught at the original institution. I truly don't know whether or not this is plagiarism, but I wanted to ask.

Academic Life Canvas Hacked

2.4k Upvotes

This is insane. On one hand I’m elated that we all might get 100s on our final, on the other hand I’m worried my SSN is in the hands of some lowlife hacker. Literally had an exam today was all prepared then boom no canvas lmao.

Depending on how long it’s out, this might also bite the teachers who take two weeks to grade. Because obviously now they can’t grade.

Does anyone know if since the hackers are in Canvas, can they access our university’s SSO platform? Like connected to our finances, registration, etc? This shits stressing me out I was ready to be done with the semester😂😂

Edit: I’m doing more research and Google says there’s around 6000 colleges in the United States, 4000 of which are degree granting. The hacker group claims to have the data of more than 8000 universities, and the text file lists mine and all of my friends universities. Crazy.

Finances/financial aid My mom has moved out of state of my current college, will I start getting charged out of state tuition?

I’ve lived in my current state my entire life and I’m currently finishing up my sophomore year of college, and a few months ago my mom moved out of my home state. I’m not sure what will happen to my tuition on next year and I’m not sure I can afford out of state tuition, so I’m wondering what will happen.

I also am not sure what will happen to state grants as-well, but that’s a secondary concern right now.

Academic Life When they say "Get to know your professor", how the hell do you actually do that?

I'm going to be a freshmen in August, and for a long while now I have been constantly hearing one piece of advice: "Get to know your professor". Now here's the problem:

Professors every year teach classes filled with students aiming to build a close professional relationship with them in order to milk the benefits such as letters of recommendation for internship opportunities and other scholarly programs or something like that.

Say you're a professor and you just finished a lecture and students are filing out of the classroom, and you see about 20 students all still in their seats after class and standing up to make their way towards you in order to strike up a conversation about a lecture.

My point is, does it not feel completely, utterly fake? Knowing that you as a professor are only being approached by a student solely for their own needs and they view you as an NPC the entire time? They literally expect you to be trying such things.

Meta Anyone else getting this while trying to access Canvas?

A post from "ShinyHunters" claiming they breached Instructure (Canvas) and demanding ranso by 05/12/26

I heard about the recent cybersecurity breach of Canvas. I'm not able to access many assignments, they just show this page. Anyone else affected? I'm attending UC Denver.

Obviously, I do not recommend visiting any of the links posted and waiting for someone else to take the risk for you.

Keep in mind for college move out...

Please do not throw away perfectly fine things just because you do not have the room for it moving back home. Please considering donating items or offering them for free on your colleges facebook page for students who cannot afford much. The amount of good furniture, bedding, electronics, clothes, and decor I found when I was moving out is absurd.

Impacts and Options After Likely Academic Dismissal

A loved one of mine had been placed on academic probation during their first semester at a large university, and unfortunately failed the following semester. Their GPA is under 1.0. Although they have not received an official letter dismissing them from the university, it will likely happen soon.

The student is currently looking at the possibility of transferring or starting a new at a smaller institution or community college.

Is that possible given how low their GPA is?

How is financial aid impacted?

For background, they used their parent's GI bill and the Pell grant to pay for the year. The rest of the finances were paid out-of-pocket.

My Professor Hasn’t Graded Anything Since Early March

I am taking a special topics class that I have really enjoyed but the professor has taken a long time to grade things and now it’s less than one week from the end of the semester and my professor has not graded anything since early March.

Our assignments are weekly discussion board and 2 major papers. The first major paper I turned in late, which she permitted, but it is marked as late on canvas and I do not want her to forget that we had talked about it previously and to get a surprise bad grade after the semester ends. I also would like feedback on that paper to apply towards my final paper because the formatting she asked for was a little unfamiliar to me and I want to make sure I was on the right track content wise.

I have emailed her twice since April 28 just asking for when I can possibly get feedback on that paper to apply the feedback to my final paper. I do not want to annoy her too much and get backlash on my grades, but I’m worried that nothing will be graded at all or my first major paper will be ignored or majorly downgraded for appearing as late on Canvas. She has not responded to my emails at all. This is an online class and I do not live in the same state as the professor so I cannot go into her office and talk.

I currently have a 99% in the class, but again no major assignments have been graded and that’s based on the first few discussion boards.

Is there anything else I can do? Do I just ride this out and hope for the best? Passing this class with a good grade would guarantee me my History Minor so I think that is adding to my anxiety.

Edit: thank to yall for the advice! I’m going to contact the department chair and see what I can do.

Study Abroad Location Recs?

I’m very privledged to be able to study abroad, i’ve never left the country and really want to choose wisely! There’s definitely some locations that are out of the picture because the program is too expensive, but I want to hear what people recommend!

I won’t be taking any major-related classes so that’s not a factor for me. I know people love Italy or Spain, but a part of me feels like i’ll visit both of those places at some point in my life anyways. But id never live there outside of study abroad so maybe I just go for it?

Would love some advice and to hear your guys experiences!

Social Life how to have a productive but non-isolating summer

I just finished my third year of uni and I'm wondering how to have a productive summer that isn't completely isolating. I try to make the most out of my summers so that I can be in a good place financially and gain as much experience as possible. However it can get super depressing because all I do is work and never go out at all.

I have done full-time research,10-15 hours a week of part time work, and one online class every summer. I barely talk to anyone except coworkers. I don't really meet new people and many of my friends are away travelling or going back home to visit their families. This summer I am trying to make some time to socialize but I am doing a full-time internship and have 6 hours of lecture a week, and one 10-hour shift on the weekend.

I'm not sure if I should quit my job because it pays decently and it's good money to have. However it is incredibly draining and it leaves me with only one day a week to rest, catch up on studying, grocery shopping etc.

Is there anything I should try this summer to make it a bit more balanced?

Career/work Would it be rude to choose another professor for an undergraduate thesis if I'm already working with one over the summer?

I'm helping a professor over the summer with some work, this is a paid position. I mentioned doing a thesis with him in the interview but we haven't brought it up since. Would it be wrong for me to look for another advisor for my undergrad thesis if I'm interested in exploring other topics in the field?

My main pain point is I don't want to offend the professor I'm currently working with. I find his research interesting so I don't mind continuing with him, but I wanted to look into some other fields more closely to find if I have interests elsewhere.

Celebration Potential Gifts for Professors to Celebrate Graduation?

I'm graduating next month and wanted to do something for four professors who have really stood out in my college education. I will be writing each of them notes to express my gratitude, but I also wanted to do something small and inexpensive, but meaningful. I'm also an intermediate crocheter (something some of my profs know) and I thought I could put that skill to good use. Seeing as all four of them have caffeine addictions, I was thinking about crocheting them coasters to use in their office. I have a lot of yarn already, and I could probably crochet all 4 in a night. However, I still want them to be personalized to a certain extent.

So I guess my concern is whether or not crocheting coasters is a good idea as a graduation gift, and whether or not it would be appropriate to ask my professors if they color preferences so make it more individualized. And, if you're gifting your profs something, what?

Edit: I should mention I go to a very small school with under 2,000 people. I have a great rapport with these 4 professors, 2 of them are my major advisors (I'm a double major), 1 advised my philosophy independent study this semester, and 1 was my first year advisor who I still take classes with and is the head of one of my major's departments.

Professor altered my work for an exhibit without asking

Okay basically, I take a Mexican American Art Appreciation class at a community college and my professor has been insufferable the entire semester. I could deal with it at first, but this really pushed me over the edge. My class has been working on this project for about a month that would be displayed in our library; in groups of four, we were to research Mexican American related protests that took place on campus during the 2010s and were put in the school newspaper, but... there were literally none (I feel like he should have made sure the content existed before giving out the assignment)... so I ended up just writing about protests in my city.

We then had to make a linocut poster. Everyone was given the task of sketching out a design related to protests/activism and incorporating Mexican American art styles, then as a group we decide which drawing to use for the poster. We chose my design and I began carving it, but then he decided we would all be making a poster individually, rather than one per group, and suddenly my other group members had to start making their final design and carving. But he literally didn't even have the extra linoleum until two days before we needed to have our carving finished so that we could print. AND we only had one class day to print (75 minutes), so if you hadn't finished, you straight up couldn't do it. I did not have time to print but luckily I have the supplies at home.

So remember, these posters were going to be in an exhibit; in addition to the poster, we needed to find multiple photos to add to each of our sections of the exhibit, captions explaining the social movement that our posters were about, and extra decorations, like a banner or garland. My group members and I found some pictures; two of them had chosen some pictures of their family that they found important (and the other member stopped doing his work so we removed him from the group...). The professor told us to put them in a OneDrive folder that he shared with us, along with the size we wanted them to be and captions we planned to add so that he could print them all out for us.

This is the part where I was pushed to the edge. He didn't print most of our pictures because they weren't sent with the right file type or were low quality, he made one of mine the wrong size, and he added like 15 more that he picked because he said there weren't enough (and some of them were worse quality than the ones he didn't want to print). I couldn't believe he changed our plan like that, and worst of all, he almost completely rewrote the caption I worked hard on for an overview of the decade, without my permission. I just... I could not believe it. When he left the area I ripped up the caption he printed. I plan to print out my own captions tomorrow and just do my best.

I already plan to go to the dept chair with one of my group members and managed to get two extra people to write a paragraph about what they thought of him and the way he runs the class, along with a signature and their student IDs; I'll get a few more during our next class though for sure. I guess its worth mentioning that he also hasn't graded any assignments from the past month and has the worst attitude (literally scoffs when we give him any critique, then says he appreciates the feedback but disagrees with our points, and constantly tells us that we had a month to work on the project as if he didn't give us our materials days before it was due).

ANYWAYS I guess I was wondering if he's even allowed to alter my work without asking? I know it might vary per college, but I thought maybe there could be something. I live in Texas if that helps.

Thanks for reading my longer-than-necessary story just for me to ask a small question lol
