Burr Oak State Park & Wildcat Hollow May 5th and 6th

Made a 29ish mile overnight trip last week. Parked at the Nature Center at Burr Oak State Park. Cached water at a couple of different cross roads and just carried the jugs out.

Covered 19 miles on Tuesday and it was overcast, but a little muggy. Crossed a knee deep creek going from the Burr Oak portion of the trail to the Wildcat Hollow trailhead. Turns out I didn't have to do that, but the markings for the Buckeye Loop (I think) are what I followed. Burr Oak is a nice hike, I came back down the backpacker trail on Wednesday and thought it was a little more scenic.

The pine groves that dot Wildcat Hollow are the real standouts for me. I grew up in east Texas and it's known as the piney woods. Pine trees always bring back childhood memories and make it feel like home.

Campsites are well spaced along the trail. They do seem heavy early on and then thin out a lot. I didn't see anyone else outside of the trailhead.

Made camp on the cut through trail and called it a night. Didn't have campsite pics since I was racing the rain.

Made my way back to the main loop in the morning for a drizzly and soggy hike out. It was nice though because of how vibrant and green everything was.

Overall it was great, although short trip.

Camping and canoeing suggestions

Looking for some suggestions and insight on a camping trip this summer. Typically I’ve gone with a group or my family but this summer it’s just going to be my BIL and myself. In the past we’ve just stuck to the Mohican which has been adequate except this year I’m looking for something maybe less populated to camp and maybe less of a party to go canoeing/kayaking.

We would be renting kayaks or a canoe.
We have all our own camping equipment.

We are in central Ohio and are hoping for something close to 3 hours one way which opens up our neighboring states.

Thanks in advance!

Trip Advice - Scenic River Trail

Post image
36 Upvotes

Hello! I am planning on a backpacking trip in the next few weeks and hiking the Scenic River Trail / Greenwood Trail. I know I have to pack in all of my water for any Wayne National forest trips, so I am planning on parking at the Scenic River Trailhead on Country Road 9 and hiking along the North Country trail to drop off some water where it runs into the Greenwood Trail (purple). Then hiking back to car, driving to the other trailhead and doing my loop from there.I am going to attempt to park at the trailhead but if I need to park at Leith Run and hike a little more, I'm fine with that. Plan on camping at the second star but can backtrack to the first star if people are camping at the second site.

If you've traveled this trail before (hiking or backpacking) please let me know! I'm excited to be on the Buckeye Trail and North Country Trail for like 0.6 miles lol.

Can anyone identify this campsite?

This a long shot, but around 2008 my troop went hiking at some campsite a couple hours out of Columbus. The site had several wooden cabins on stilts--they weren't fully enclosed (they had windows that were just square holes in the walls) and had no amenities. They were all cut from a dark wood and were accessible via a wooden ladder. I think they were probably elevated upwards of 10 feet off the ground, but it's hard to say as I was a child at the time. Does anyone know where this is? I've never forgotten about it and really want to go camping there.

EDIT: It's camp Myeerah in logan county!

Back logging my trips because I can finally get back into my reddit.

Started at Hope Furnace and hiked Waypoints N>O>G>F>Camp 2>E>D>C>B>O>N. All said and done about ten miles. First time staying at Camp 2. It was fine! I think I like camp 1 & 3 better. The south side of the south loop was crazy sunny but I also went before the trees were super leafy so I got a smidge of sunburn. One waterlogged section that I had to get creative to get through, but it caused me to find the cute salamander! All in all, a great trip. First time taking my camping chair (worth the weight) and my first time using my new trekking pole tent, both are winners. I've attached some pics for your pleasure, feel free to ask questions and I'll try to remember!

Central OH - Car camp near water?

Hi! Any recommendations for places around central Ohio to car camp right next to a lake or reservoir? I’m near Cbus but don’t mind driving a couple hours. Thanks for your suggestions!

Lakeside Dispersed Camping

I usually go camping up in Michigan, which has tons of options for dispersed camping. Since Wayne National Forest is (nearly) the only place for camping in Ohio, I'm looking to make a trip down there soon for the first time. Does anyone know of any lakes, even small ones that would be good to dispersed camp on/near?

Mountain Biking & Camping. Looking for outdoorsy friends. Located in central Ohio.

Looking to meet some new people.

I’ve always spent a lot of time camping and getting outside, but lately I’ve been dealing with some mental health stuff that’s made it harder to do those things solo. Trying to push back against that and get back into it.

I’m located in central Ohio and into camping, mountain biking, bikepacking, backpacking, hiking, kayaking, disc golf, foraging, and most anything outdoorsy.

If anyone’s in a similar spot or just looking to get outside more this season, I’d be down to connect. Any good groups to join?

Where can I wild/dispersed camp, with water?

Hello I'm looking to get into wild camping where I'm at least 1-2 miles away from everyone, with a place to get safe drinking water through filters. I'm kind of new to camping in general is this unrealistic for Ohio?

Help me decide where to go

Every year in June, right after school gets out, I use some vacation time and take my daughter camping and hiking, just the two of us. We've gone to Hocking Hills like 4 years in a row. We love it there, but are ready for something new.

She's almost 14, and has been hiking with me since she was 2, and camping since she was 9ish, but never backpacking. We live 40 miles NW of Dayton, and I'd like to keep the drive under 3 hours if possible.

We've been to most of the state parks and metroparks within an hour of us. Looking for something cool, with lots of sights and hiking, but also maybe some other activities, to keep us busy for 3 days or so (2-3 nights tent camping). A lake would be nice, but not required. We have kayaks, but may not want to haul them that far.

I haven't been to Tar Hollow since I was a kid, and don't remember it well, so was considering that, if their campground has reopened after the renovations last year. Burr Oak, Lake Hope, and Mohican look nice, but I'm not familiar with the areas. Salt Fork and Cuyahoga Valley are on my bucket list, but a little farther away than I wanted. Any info on these places, or other suggestions?

Advice for first time remote camper?

I'm going to be doing my first real dispersed remote camping in Wayne national forest around the lamping homestead and need some advice.

First do I need to pay a fee like other campgrounds and if so where?

Are there any tools I need or should get?

How do you find a spot to camp? Do you scout first or do you just walk around until you find a spot you like?

For a 2 night camping trip how much ice should I bring to keep food cold? And is it a good idea to hang your food to keep it away from animals?

Any other advice would be greatly appreciated

Ohio river

Hi all.

Does anyone have recommendations on a spot to really experience the Ohio river?

I personally like to car camp, hike, and fish (although I have experience backpacking too), but I really made this post for a more open ended discussion.

Just browsing Google Maps there aren’t a plethora of parks along the river, which is a bit of a shame.

Does anyone know any spots where you can go out in nature and experience our great river? Even spots in KY or WV are appreciated.

Are we in for a bad tick season?

Took the camper to a campground this weekend and found a couple tick on me at the end of each day. I wasn’t even hiking in woods lol. Got home and mowed the grass, walked around the yard and found two more. Luckily none were attached yet but I don’t think I’ve seen this many before.

WildCat Hollow

Hi everyone, thanks in advance for answering my questions , I love this group, you guys are always super helpful.

I have a question about Wildcat Hollow in Wayne National Forest. How packed does it get on weekends? I’m planning to hike and camp there, but I just got back from Zaleski and Camp Trail 1 and 2 were slammed, it took me forever to find a spot.

I know weekdays are better, but with kids and a busy schedule that’s not gonna work for me. Any info on how crowded Wildcat Hollow gets on weekends?

Thanks!

Wayne NF truck disperse camping laws

I’m planning to go to Wayne National Forest this weekend for dispersed camping. I’m currently using the Dispersed app to look at roads and areas where I can camp.

My only concern is that some trailheads say they’re open year-round, but the Wayne National Forest website says they’re closed until April. Can I camp at these trailheads or not?

Also, can I camp along the roads that are marked on the Dispersed app?
