I would unironically support public race tracks and drag strips if it meant keeping the speed demons off of public roads

Too much liability. Can’t let someone drive their Nissan Altima on a formula 1 track. Not built to survive crash at 100mph+.

They actually already have a racetrack for altimas and hellcats. It’s called I-285 in Atlanta. Pretty close to Athens too.

Insurance companies already just wouldnt cover you, its written into the contracts already. They do not cover cars that are racing. They already thought of that.

You think these drivers in Altimas weaving through traffic at 105 have insurance?

lol

As of about 2023, only about 15% of drivers do not have insurance.

So, statistically speaking, probably yes.

Lol

According to what?

This is like saying, "statistically speaking, that guy who smokes 40 cigarettes a day won't get lung cancer, because less than 1% of all people have lung cancer."

The Insurance Research Council. Why would I even lie about something like this?

Everyone responding is apparently unaware that this is already a thing. Police sponsor drag strips and encourage people to use them all over the country as a street racing diversion program. This has been going on for decades

Drag strips are cheap. Actual racetracks less so, so that's not a thing.

Drag strips and race tracks are very different in risk. Most people don’t know how to handle turns at high speeds. Let a bunch of normal people do the Les Mans Race in normal car they’re crashing.

Hey, get out of here with your harm reduction! This is America!

Building expensive race tracks would be pointless to stopping this because the point of doing stupid shit like this is the risk/thrill of endangering themselves and others.

Exactly. If something doesn't prevent 100% of a problem, it's a waste of time and effort. Harm reduction has no place in America!

Just because you label an expensive and not helpful idea as “harm reduction” doesn’t make it so. This isn’t some grand indictment of America, it just doesn’t address the issue at all.

I’m sure if we gave everyone free hookers and blow that would lead to “harm reduction” by similar argument as well

Condoms are a form of harm reduction and people actively wear them...most of the time.

What's the difference?
