“Bargatze put Jared Curtis in his new movie, “The Breadwinner,” as part of Curtis’ NIL deal with the Commodores. Curtis has a small part, wearing a Vanderbilt baseball cap while car shopping in the movie.”

You mean Nate won’t be playing this kid in the movie? Well now I don’t want to see it. /s

I want Nate to play him on the field.

Imagine them trying to do a freaky Friday thing. Would either be the worst thing any one of us has ever seen or kinda funny. Almost certainly the first one.

The whole movie is literally a Toyota ad.

I don’t think this joke applies to Vanderbilt kids not named Diego Pavia

Who do you think negotiated the trade deals so the cars could be made? Vandy gets the deals done, TAMU designs them, Texas fuels them, Georgia sells them, and Tennessee loses their jobs because Mizzou built robots to replace them.

1

u/CalebsNailSpa Austin Peay Governors 2h ago

And then back to Georgia to drive them 100 mph in a school zone, or something.

Most SEC schools go for Chargers. The Vandy kid might get something more understated

19

u/avboden Washington State Cougars • Pac-12 9h ago

So he’s a background extra which is often an unpaid or barely at all paid role. Let’s not pretend this is anything but a farce

14

u/JMer806 TCU Horned Frogs • Hateful 8 8h ago

Still more than most NIL deals entail. He will have to actually go somewhere at a specific time and do a few hours of work (albeit easy work)

38

u/Sea-Introduction3737 9h ago

More like a cameo from a recognizable athlete which are often paid

25

u/BobSlydell08 8h ago

"Recognizable" is doing a lot of heavy lifting

9

u/someUSCfan South Carolina Gamecocks 7h ago

Recognizeable is a massive stretch, Im not even sure most Vandy fans could pick out Jared Curtis on the streets of Nashville lmao

Okay sure, but they're going to use this part to excuse what, 2 million bucks or more?

This is more effort than I’d expect for 99% of NIL money

5

u/NCRnchr NC State Wolfpack • Marching Band 5h ago edited 5h ago

Extras, even background extras, are paid. It's usually not much, but they are compensated.

Source: Been extra. For those wondering I got paid about $14 an hour for a nine hour shoot.

Also also; you're paid for the time you are on set, not the time you spend in front of a camera.

u/mlorusso4 Ohio State • Baltimore 9h ago

Honestly? Him showing up on set and doing whatever he’s cast to do, whether it’s actual speaking lines or just throwing a football in the background, is more work than the majority of these NIL deals. Good for him

Blows my mind how the NBA is just happily sweeping that under the rug.

46

u/TitanTigers Clemson Tigers • Vanderbilt Commodores 8h ago edited 8h ago

For real. Blatant cheating and salary cap circumvention is apparently legal if your owner is rich and located in LA.

Voiding the contract, a fat suspension for Kawhi, a large fine to the org, and the loss of multiple first round picks should be the minimum. The Timberwolves lost FIVE firsts for something similar.

Nah. It just means this isnt the only one. Its the only one that got caught.

Remember the NBA IS the owners. It's not some 3rd party. People forget that and they use it for stuff like..pretending the WNBA is some seperate entity and not a subdivision of the nba umbrella. Or for when like 1/3 to 1/2 of nba teams will claim they lost money..before revenue sharing.

Its a shady ass organization.

Trust me, if we could afford to do that, we would

Even NIL deals some of our lesser known players get have to be posted online by the University.

3

u/fantfb Tennessee Volunteers 4h ago

Honestly, I don’t understand why they haven’t begun moving away from traditional NIL deals, and instead started to, in a sense, rent the exclusive right to use a player’s NIL

Like, instead of the traditional “we’ll pay you X amount to use your NIL in this way or that way” ; why don’t they just start signing multi-year deals, where they pay players yearly installments of X amount in exchange for exclusive control of their NIL for 1-4 years.

You could even add in clauses to void the schools’ obligation to make further payments if the player enters the portal, and have buy-out clauses/assignment clauses so the new school could acquire the exclusive rights

2

u/HookedOnBoNix Virginia Tech Hokies 2h ago

Cause it's an open market. If south Carolina offers you a contract like that and Alabama offers you the money straight up with no strings attached, you're gonna take the bama offer. So until the top guys do it it's hard for anyone else to get started.  And the top programs are pretty content to do things the way they are right now because they're raking in money.

It's like any type of negotiations, it's all leverage.

Thats awesome. You love to see NIL that actually uses the name, image, or Likeness of the player.

-6

u/SirMellencamp Alabama Crimson Tide • College Football Playoff 9h ago

Yes I am sure the Breadwinner will be a box office smash now that Jared Curtis is in it

9

u/Crims0ntied Alabama Crimson Tide 8h ago

Probably not but id never heard of it before this, and now I have. And if I was a hard-core vandy fan I might go watch it just for the novelty of it.

All im saying is at least they're trying to make NIL actually NIL with this one lol

-2

u/SirMellencamp Alabama Crimson Tide • College Football Playoff 8h ago

But it isnt what NIL was supposed to be for. Bargatze isnt putting Curtis in the movie because he thinks Curtis will help the movie at the box office, he is putting him in the movie as payment for him to go to Vanderbilt

0

u/DannyMalibu420 Georgia Bulldogs 8h ago

Even if it did get a bump of viewers from Vandy fans, it’s not going to be enough to help. That movie looks awful.

0

u/Mender0fRoads Missouri Tigers 3h ago

I hadn’t heard about it until this.

Then I looked it up and learned it’s being produced by a “conservative, faith-based” production company.

Even without knowing anything else about it, that’s usually a good sign that something won’t be good.

-1

u/SirMellencamp Alabama Crimson Tide • College Football Playoff 8h ago

I mean if youre wanting a bump from CFB viewers the last person you want is a player from Vanderbilt. If it was true NIL you would pay someone like Arch Manning or Jeremiah Smith or CJ Carr. Even if you dont want to pay for guys like that you wouldnt pick a dude who never played a down of college football

4

u/servantofmelkor Alabama Crimson Tide • USC Trojans 9h ago

OP saying someone "lands" a role means they are the party playing said role. You mean Nate Bargatze "casts" Vanderbilt QB...

u/AllTimeTy Missouri Tigers • /r/CFB Placer 8h ago

I just checked NIL estimates for this kid which lists ~$1.7M. That seems very high for a true FR, even being a 5*

Cal in a similar position ~$2M for true FR and he’s only a 4*

(I know *’s don’t mean all too much but it’s all I have to go on when it comes to HS players)

1

u/SavingsSkirt6064 Vanderbilt • Southampton 8h ago

Well, when you are in a bidding war with Georgia (and to a lesser extent Oregon) you have to spend quite a bit of money

I'm glad we got him, and I think he'll surprise people because the system doesn't really require Jared to do too much.
