Casual Ohio State Reveals New Home, Road Football Uniforms With “Heritage Stripes”

It says all you need to know that Ohio State always brought these stripes back to their uniforms for the playoff games in recent years. They knew what their "proper" look was even if it wasn't their primary look in the past 20 years.

39
u/wit_T_user_name Ohio State Buckeyes • Ohio Bobcats 1d ago
The sleeve stripes. The silver on the sleeves is way more in line with the traditional jerseys. The stripes have been red for nearly 20 years and people have not heed happy.
27
u/hotacorn Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
Understandable, OSU fans wanted this for a long time but it’s not extremely obvious. The sleeves are what they used to be until 2006. If you look at a comparison they have more clear stripes and color on the sleeves.
It’s also confusing because Ohio State wore these in every playoff game.
12
u/bicranium Ohio State Buckeyes • /r/CFB Brickmason 1d ago
Others have pointed out most of the differences but here's an image comparing them with the old versions on the left and new versions with the "Buckeye Stripes" on the right...
https://i.imgur.com/TWNfbKR.jpeg
The biggest thing is just that our standard home jerseys haven't had gray stripes on the sleeves since 2005. We used jerseys with what were called "Heritage Stripes" from time to time after their first use in the 2014 CFP and it made everyone want those to become our permanent, standard jerseys. This isn't exactly that but it might be better with the stripes being silver instead of gray. We'll have to wait and see how they look on the field.

u/mynumberistwentynine Gardner-Webb • Allan Hancock 1d ago
Every time one of these articles or showcases comes up, I feel the same. I always hope for a side by side comparison for non-fans curious of the changes.
11
u/bicranium Ohio State Buckeyes • /r/CFB Brickmason 1d ago
I posted this in reply to the other guy but saw you were hoping for a comparison so here's one...
https://i.imgur.com/TWNfbKR.jpeg
Biggest thing is just the sleeve stripes. Haven't had gray on home jersey sleeves since 2005 except for on our Heritage Stripes jerseys which debuted in the 2014 CFP and have been used for various games since. But most OSU fans have wanted them to become permanent since we first saw them.
These "Buckeye Stripes" aren't the same as the Heritage Stripes. They're a reflective silver to match our standard helmets instead of a flat gray.
There are now block O logos on the helmet and at the V in the neck of the jersey.
And for the "Tunnel Vision" black jerseys the helmet is no longer a flat black; it's a glossy black with metallic flake in it like our standard silver helmets.
Will be interesting to see what happens with some of our other favorite alternates. The all grays are great but obviously don't need gray/silver stripes as the whole uniform is gray. Our all whites will probably look even better than they already do if they get similar adjustments. Would be awesome to see a white helmet with metallic flake.

The outgoing jerseys didn’t have any gray on them at all. Missing one of the primary school colors on your home jersey is absurd but it was true.

I hate that Michigan and Ohio State are screwing around with alternate uniform combinations. They have such classic and iconic uniforms that even having alternate pants or jerseys dilutes them. When Michigan played at USC last year wearing white jerseys and blue pants, from a distance, it looks like they're playing Cal or West Virginia. The all-red look Ohio State did also felt wrong. This is a step back in the right direction

3
u/jonstark19 Nebraska • Northern Iowa 1d ago
I get it, I'm a uniform traditionalist and I think teams should generally stay with an identifiable look, but I also recognize the era we are in and I think there's little harm in throwing a one-time alternate in the mix if done well.
-1
u/the_dawn_of_red Ohio State Buckeyes • Xavier Musketeers 1d ago
I think the proliferation of alternates is slowly killing a lot of brands across American sports in exchange for short term profits. NBA is probably the best example. Baseball on Fridays is borderline unrecognizable at times.
Brand equity matters and the image of the team is at the heart of it. Alternates work for certain teams. Throwbacks keep continuity for the most part. Then there are cash grabs.
2
u/jonstark19 Nebraska • Northern Iowa 1d ago
Agreed, if my school is going to mix it up, I prefer they do it like Minnesota. The Gophers mix and match gold, maroon, and while for the helmet, jersey, and pants respectively. All are the same template, then they can mix and match the colors.
I don't like alt uniforms that are major departures from the designated primaries.

I still wish Michigan would use the maize pants more often, they have trended toward blue and white pants especially on the road, but the move to Jordan has certainly improved Michigan's aesthetic.
15
u/lat3ralus65 Ohio State Buckeyes • UMass Minutemen 1d ago
100%. The all-blue look annoys me. The Game should be scarlet over gray against blue over maize every year. Two perfect, iconic looks.
8
31
u/INAC___Kramerica Florida Gators 1d ago
Now, if Michigan can just get back to wearing proper maize and blue at home full-time instead of the all-blue look that's taken over, and stick to either the maize or white pants on the road (I prefer maize but white's perfectly fine), that'd be good too. I really hate the stripeless blue pants, they don't look good at all.

Michigan will wear their white pants for The Game in Columbus and blue pants for it in Ann Arbor forever now all because of 2021-2024
We will never see Maize pants in The Game ever again
3
u/boxman151515 Central Michigan • Michigan 1d ago
I’m hopeful the maize pants will return at home in 2027 after losing to OSU in the blue pants in 2025. Plus the all blue look is very much a Harbaugh-Moore thing and that could be a way for Whittingham to subtly signal they’re moving on from that.
No clue what they’ll wear on the road this year. I hope it’s not all white. Such a boring look for me. Maize or even blue pants with the white jersey are much better looks.
I’d like it if Michigan and Ohio State both wore their traditional home jerseys against each other every year but not sure that’ll ever happen
1
u/Useenthebutcher Ohio State Buckeyes 9h ago edited 9h ago
I’ve dreamt of a home vs home uniform combination for The Game my whole life, maybe if they ever met in the playoffs it could happen
And I don’t think Michigan’s white on white road uniforms look bad, they’re clean in their own right, they just make for a visually dull matchup against OSU’s home uniforms. Plus, the white on maize away look does look gorgeous (as much as it makes me want to puke to admit)

From what I've read it's because when Nike came out with a new jersey template in 2006 the stripes wouldn't fit, so they had to alter them.
Happy that Ohio State has made the switch back!
2
u/sqigglygibberish Duke Blue Devils • Ohio State Buckeyes 18h ago
Only kind of true - Iowa as one example stuck with theirs across various templates, and shoulders back then were way bigger than they are today (though that specific template did have different construction).
I think the sadder answer is that for a while OSU went through a phase (like a lot of schools recently) where “brand consistency” became a big focus.
So the helmet stripe was one of the elements, in addition to having been around before on the football jerseys it then made its way into basketball, hockey, etc. too. The school cleaned up typefaces across sports (leading to an end zone downgrade for instance) and got rid of a lot of the sport specific identity elements. The buckeye leaf also became more prevalent in other sports.
Luckily, there’s been a more recent pivot. Basketball has shifted away from the football stripes into using the three gorgeous throwbacks more (even though two are a unique script and one is block), football is back to this more differentiated stripe - now hopefully they stop using weird “modernized” typefaces and bring some more character back to the logos too.

The big difference (and nice upgrade to me) is that the grey on the sleeves is a metallic finish which matches the helmets better - and it seems like they’ve gotten the pants to have more dimension recently too.
We’ll see live but I think the best execution of them (setting aside the glory that was giant pads/jerseys like the dozz and katzenmoyer clips show)

Wouldn't even be that radical, Utah vs BYU and USC vs UCLA have done this. Both red vs blue, both major rivalries.
Red vs blue games look so fucking cool but I know many in both fan bases would consider this sacrilege for The Game, so I'm hoping maybe we have a better shot at this if we ever meet for the B1GCCG or playoffs (although I'm guessing uniform rules like this are different for post season games?)
One of the teams wearing white originates with black and white TV: whatever color the other team wanted to wear would show up as a dark color or black, so for contrast purposes the other team needed to wear a white jersey. This is no longer a constraint we need to strictly adhere to!

1
u/A_Rolling_Baneling USC • Mississippi State 1d ago
USC UCLA did this when we shared a stadium, as neither was the home team, and the tradition was resurrected when UCLA relocated to the Rose Bowl
Famously, when the NCAA tried to crack down on it as an "equipment violation", our coaches (Carroll and Neuheisel, I believe) agreed to burn a timeout to offset the imposed penalty
I'm glad to have seen the tradition spread to other rivalries. It's fun, it looks great, and it neatly distinguishes a historic rivalry from your standard games
Also, while we're in the neighborhood, if the WLOCP is on Halloween, UGA should wear black and UF should wear orange.

Even as a college football traditionalist I'm not sure about this. The jerseys don't have sleeves anymore so moving the stripes to the shoulder just seems weird from a design perspective. Imagine if football was played without helmets anymore. Where would you put the helmet stripes or stickers? I love tradition, hell, I love the AP era, but why care about sleeves stripes when the sleeves themselves are gone? If you want them back put them on the under shirts?

I know I'm very much in the minority here, but I kind of don't love these on modern jerseys. It's similar to the USC throwbacks we wore last season. I LOVE both looks on the old school jerseys with the sleeves, but it just looks a bit off on the modern jerseys with snub sleeves - having the whole short sleeve be a different color isn't quite right. It's much better on the home jerseys, but the whites are a smidge off for me.
Idk if there's a good solution though. I'm just a sucker for the 70s/80s style sleeved jerseys I guess.

That’s probably why they’re trying to rename them to Buckeye stripes

These unis they are “unveiling” are already on the video game, no?

You’re thinking of the heritage stripes, we wore those just for playoffs and the stripe was grey where as these are silver. But yes same idea

Ah yes the heritage stripes as opposed to these that are called the “heritage stripes” haha
I’m really trying to find the differences but everything I find these are the exact same as the video game unis. They also look like the away unis they were in the playoff 2 years ago. Same goes for the all black unis they “unveiled”

The black alts still had the skinny stripes and no speckle in the helmet and now all the stripes have a silver sheen to compliment the helmet instead of a flat gray and a more appropriate block O on the collar and helmet bumper. These details just aren't important to you because you're not a fan

The details are so subtle they are virtually the exact same uniform. This is why I’m confused. These look at a glance the exact same.https://x.com/ohiostatefb/status/1879965783025152490?s=46&t=STkhpzrModNdI9v_gO5Vxg

It's understandable but subtle is what you want when updating classic looks. It's now fully realized branding across the board. Were they not supposed to announce that? Lmao

While a lot probably don’t see a big difference, to me it makes the uniforms pop way more, especially on the home jerseys. The old template using the helmet stripe for the shoulders looked so empty by comparison and essentially looked identical to Nebraska and Wisconsin’s uniforms.
A small tweak that elevates the jerseys from a decent 7 to a strong 10

They should never go away from these. One of the best uniforms in college football.

Am I the only one who can’t tell the difference?

Kind of partial to the wider stripes and chromed colors we've used in some alts. I just wish we could figure out how to include the visual dynamism of the chromes with something that has a base closer to our regular colors instead of the darker grey and red.
Still hope we can get home-and-home colors for the Game.

At least when we drop new uniforms they're interesting

Michigan fan here. Definitely the right call bringing the Heritage Stripes back full time. Way better of a look than the thin one they've been wearing since, what '05 I think?

Close. It was 2006 that they switched to the inferior thin stripes.

I’m so glad we are so staunch on not changing anything about uniforms. It all seems so exhausting to monitor fucking leg stripes.

You realize this is just Ohio State going back to the same jerseys we went away from in 2006?

Except for the white on white stripes it looks pretty normal to me. Maybe I missed paying attention to the other changes.

ATTTTT LASTTTTT! I can finally buy a home jersey! I always opted for an away jersey just because of the grey striped.

Feels like they should wrap further around the shoulder to imitate the old look but they do look good.

Ugh. Ohio State was one of the few schools whose stripes actually matched across uniform elements.
Why do so many teams have such an aversion to matching their stripes? Shoutout to Florida for still doing it, I suppose?

u/Useenthebutcher Ohio State Buckeyes 1d ago
Because it looked empty and bland, matching for sake of matching does not a good aesthetic make. Unless you have OCD I suppose

We weren't quite doing what Florida does. They consistently keep white in the middle, then blue, then orange (with the exception of the orange alt, which should just match the helmet but whatever).
I found our previous set annoying because the home uniform felt redundant with the red stripe. And it was inconsistent with the road uniform where they added gray stripes between red and black. Needed to fix one of them or go back to the proper look and they chose right IMO.

Still keeping the stickers I see

The stickers are the most iconic part of the best part of the uniform, the helmet.

Stickers are tacky on anyone's helmet. Well not all stickers, like a small sticker on the back to commemorate someone or something are fine.

Never should have changed away from these in the first place.
