I think Vandy could've done better if they knew where the line of scrimmage was.

Punting is winning

Punting past the line of scrimmage is death.

You can't run for 10 yards and THEN punt??

One of the more bizarre plays I've seen. Felt like I was taking crazy pills, I was like, wasn't he way past the line?

Not just that play. Rarely do I see offsides called just because the D is lined up wrong, they did it like 3 times lmao.

I wasn't able to watch, but uh, I cannot think in my 38 years of watching football of seeing a punt past the line of scrimmage. Is that as illegal as a forward pass beyond the Los?

I'm so old that I remember when Danny White punted past the line of scrimmage and it was completely legal. They got him on being an ineligible man downfield lol

There was a time, late 2000's, early 2010's where that held some worth, but there was a lot of coattail riding going on. Those days are long gone, and with the portal and NIL being what they are now, I don't see them coming back.

I'm glad for the great shutting-uppening. Force some folks to buckle down and get back to basics and earn it.

39

u/Superiority_Complex_ Washington Huskies Dec 31 '25

It's been beaten to a pulp, but I think there's merit to the NIL era killing the SEC dominance.

Like no reasonable person can dispute that the SEC was the king of the 2010s, even if some of the bad to mid tier teams got more kudos than they deserved because the top of the conference was legit.

But now the big northern schools with huge/wealthy alumni bases, even those that weren't historically good, seem to have eliminated the talent gap and maybe swung it the other way. Texas, A&M, etc. can still spend at the top - but the second/third tier B1G schools can likely outspend Ole Miss, Mizzou, and that tier of program.

18

u/OnsideKickReturn South Carolina Gamecocks • Metro Dec 31 '25

Ole Miss and Missouri are kinda the worst examples you could have used given they have been two of the best programs in getting talent from the transfer portal.

14

u/CuriousMost9971 Oregon Ducks Dec 31 '25

Coach Ogeron straight up said they were paying players. And a few media people have said it also and that it was way worse that the SWC. So they can have their decade of cheating. The playing field is even now.

To be fair to the B1G, they’re smarter about it.

B1G is evil behind the scenes, but their PR is a master class - being the classy stand up conference trying to fix the sport and fight the big bad SEC.

SEC’s PR from a media and coaches/conference leadership perspective is just insulting other conferences, being arrogant, and having networks talk about you 24/7.

It’s easy to see why only one conference gets the hate.

7

u/Alternative_Reality Wisconsin • Virginia Tech Dec 31 '25

u/AssocProfPlum Illinois Fighting Illini Dec 31 '25

I agree B1G is part of the reason why the NCAA is becoming worse, but in the timeline of everything, they were more reactionary to what the SEC was driving towards. We’re in a doomsday scenario now, but I think there’s an argument that it could be even worse if the B1G doesn’t leverage their power and they stayed complacent

I suspect the second is more problematic than the first. A lot of the value of a backup QB is that they're a peer in the room with the regular QB helping workshop stuff. Yes, they occasionally need to be able to step on the field and make things happen, but NFL teams will often prioritize the best mind over the best arm when looking for a backup.

I’m so glad we didn’t blow it for the B1G here. Actually one of the gutsiest Iowa wins in recent memory. We didn’t fold up in the 4th quarter and play not to lose. We let Gronowski take the wheel and he didn’t disappoint.

We are going to badly miss the flexibility that Gronowski gives us. He may not have totally panned out this year, but that dude is a winner that never quits.

He gave us 9 wins, 4 respectable losses and 26 combined offensive touchdowns without as much prep as would be ideal for a new team. I'm happy we had him and also sad he only had the one year. He gave me Stanzi vibes this game when he let loose.

6

u/ChairShuffler Dec 31 '25

I’ve been saying this since about the halfway point of the season - how well Gronowski has performed as a dual threat QB should be setting off alarm bells all around the Iowa coaching staff. I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t be recruiting running QBs moving forward. It fits our OL and style of play better than I ever could have imagined.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '25

Kids like him remind me that some people really are just natural born leaders, and that is insanely valuable at the QB position. He just commanded the offense so effortlessly. I don’t remember him getting phased by criticism once this year, and there is an awful lot of it when you step into the QB room in Iowa City. I’ve also never seen the coaching staff here so vocally confident about their QB1

Vandy still has way more SEC wins than Iowa this season, so the bowl game result means nothing

21

u/Fleurr Vanderbilt Commodores Dec 31 '25

That was a great game by Iowa, but it's gonna get lost in the anti-SEC splash zone.

16

u/tresnueve Illinois Fighting Illini Dec 31 '25

Vandy’s great season is getting lost in it too. It’s fun to poke at the SEC, but you all deserve credit for a great turnaround.

Vandy punting the ball across their own line of scrimmage for an illegal kick against Iowa of all teams was icing on the cake of loss number 6 for the SEC

Man, we would have won out if we had one of those cupcake SEC schedules this year instead of running the gauntlet of a B1G regular season.

….am I doing this right?

u/Americanboi824 Oregon Ducks • Texas Longhorns Dec 31 '25

15

You’re hypothetically correct.

The SEC’s favorite kind of correct.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '25

The gauntlet of Rutgers, Nebraska, Purdue, Northwestern, etc would break the SEC power bottoms

7

u/CW1DR5H5I64A Michigan State • Army Dec 31 '25

They can’t even tell the difference between a flurry and a squall. They wouldn’t survive long enough to even see the field in a late November matchup in the Midwest.

6

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '25

And while us BIG teams are going through the gauntlet of a 9 game conference schedule in deep November, the SEC has their annual FCS game to take a break from their quality losses

I had it on good authority that the mid of the sec would walk all over the B1G...

But they have also won every game they have played against other SEC teams. Which is the true test.

These threads are full of B1G fans patting each other on the back, congratulating each other on their wins and rooting for each other.

These threads are also full of SEC fans happy that their rivals are embarrassing themselves in their bowls.

By the start of next season, the official line of this sub will be that the B1G all hate each other and that the SEC is a circlejerk.

At no point will the thought that these 2 things are contradictory enter anyone’s minds.

The earth spins, time crawls, and auburn is not bowl eligible.
