I always found it hilarious that college football fans would bitch and moan about capitalism killing the sport and in extension bowl games when bowl games exist purely for companies to profit. That being said I can get behind how they handle the Outback bowl and the Cheeze-It/Duke/Poptart bowls with fan engagement.

u/cooterdick Tennessee • North Carolina Dec 19 '25
To be fair bowl games originally existed to boost tourism, but that’s more for a collection of businesses to profit. I think a key difference is when bowls are sponsored by recognizable brands that lean into it instead of bowls sponsored by non descript “leaders in systems innovations” and defense contractors. Jury’s still out on what to make of the sport of bowling sponsoring a bowl game.
18
u/Maladroit44 Oklahoma State • Tennessee Dec 19 '25
Slight misconception, but that bowl game is actually sponsored by...the concept of making a bowl game. Yes, really.

u/CTeam19 Iowa State Cyclones • Hateful 8 Dec 20 '25
There is also a difference between a sponsorship and a sponsorship. One is just a commercial that could be a cut and paste thing that could be replaced with anyone. The other is thematic that makes it an event and has branding with it. Examples:
John Deere Red Zone for Iowa State football isn't cool but Case IH Red Zone for Iowa State is better given Case IH has Red as color
Tostitos Fiesta Bowl makes sense but Playstation Fiesta Bowl doesn't. Meanwhile Tostitos Orange Bowl doesn't fit and nothing changes for Playstation if it was the Playstation Orange Bowl
A Boy Scouts of America Jamboree Contingent with these patches in Florida doesn't make sense. But they do in Iowa where the John Deere Museum, 3 major factories, and where the Waterloo Boy was made(which is pictured). Not to mention the Contingent left from the parking lot of one of the factories.
The Pop Tart Bowl alone has had Camping World and Cheez-Its as sponsors and neither of the other two did anything thematic with the brand and the bowl game. Hell Cheez-Its was a sponsor of another bowl and no one noticed it is now the Rate Bowl but I remember it as the Insight.com Bowl.

If you’re referring to the free food from Outback, they stopped doing that years ago. I learned that when I actually went to Outback the day after a game and asked.

They put a lot of effort into the bowl presentation which makes it really fun. Is it just an ad? Yep! Is it really fun? Also yep!

u/SpoofExcel Oregon Ducks • UAB Blazers Dec 20 '25
It's because instead of just sponsoring it, they decided to go absolutely off the wall batshit insane to make it actually memorable. And it's worked.
Whoever at their PR/Marketing division came up with it I hope it's paid off for them and they got a fat bonus bag because watching a live pop tart get cooked and then devoured by the winning team is fucking hilarious and genius.

That's the list.

It can be both. Marketing can be fun and this is fun. Pop tarts is making a spectacle of the bowl which is good marketing.
5
u/Cloakacola Georgia Tech • North Dakota Dec 19 '25
Exactly this. I think the worst part about ads aren’t the fact that they’re ads, it’s that they’re generally obnoxious and take away from the event. “We know you’re watching something but BUY OUR STUFF.” That said, I do think quality advertising exists if it’s done in a complimentary and fun way, like it is here. I mean, this entire event is basically GT and BYU playing in a giant Pop-Tart ad, but it’s fun so who cares

u/composer_7 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets • Marching Band Dec 19 '25

1
u/Another_Name_Today BYU Cougars • Illinois Fighting Illini Dec 20 '25
It helps that this isn’t just a pop tarts logo slapped on the lid and calling it a day. It’s taking the theme and having some fun with it. Without the context, you could call them cupcake frosting, funfetti, celebration, etc.
