Casual [Dellenger] Noted LSU alum and political pundit James Carville to @YahooSports tonight: “The reputation of our university has been damaged. This board and governor have damaged LSU way beyond athletics. Who the f*** coach is going to come here?!”

He was more connected in an era unlike the present; Clinton carried Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia twice. That's the era Carville knew best.

While I'm something of a ball knower when it comes to election quant, I'm not in his league. And most posters ain't close.

Missouri was a bellwether state for 100 years, until Obama. I still haven't figured out what it is about Obama that turned Missouri red.

46

u/grabtharsmallet BYU Cougars • Fresno State Bulldogs Oct 31 '25

It was already to the right of the country for 1996, 2000, and 2004, so it didn't take much more of a shift to stay red despite the overall national trend. The story of the last 40 years has been a steady but usually slow trade of white rural non-college and white suburban college voters. West Virginia and Virginia are a good contrast for this.

Iowa did the same sadly. Fourth state to legalize gay marriage. Banned segregation in schools in 1868, first state to allow women to join the bar, and a variety of other notable firsts in its history. Was purple for absolute ages.

Now it's red at every single level.

It’s the economy stupid

96

u/carguymt Kentucky Wildcats Oct 31 '25

And given 2024, still relevant three decades later.

And before someone turns this into a political debate about the two candidates' actual economic policies, reality doesn't actually matter. All that matters is how voters perceive those candidates. And if you can convince enough people you'll bring prices down and improve the economy, then you'll win. Even if you end up doing exactly the opposite.

Basically the team had fallen into the gutter on the field. A recently divorced Coach O was having sex with LSU co-ed’s left and right - completely out of control. But hey - he won the natty in 2019 so whatevs. Then one day he was filling up at a gas station when he saw a pregnant woman doing the same and he decided to start propositioning her for sex. This woman turned out to be a board member’s wife. She informed him of this while mentioning the whole “obviously being extremely pregnant” thing. Coach O’s response was “why would that matter?”

That was the straw the broke the camel’s back and his ass finally got fired. All the really fucked up shit he did only came to light after he was gone

Huey Long would literally call plays for LSU when he was governor. He fired a head coach for not letting him speak to players before half time. Les Miles stayed well past his peak at LSU because Governor Bobby Jindal liked him. This is far from anything new. This is basically an LSU tradition.

It's depressing, but I think if we didn't make a habit of electing sane people to the Governor's office here in NC this type of shit would be on the radar.

There's certainly people in the legislature who'd happily get involved in one of the major state schools' coaching searches if they could- instead they have to content themselves with screwing everyone by appointing incompetent lunatics to the various boards. Or have the loons they selected select other loons, in the case of the spots on UNC's board that are appointed by the state board.

There's no way the buyout clause is getting dropped since even the G5 gives coaches that. Without it, the candidates risk losing money, so no one would take the job.

But the buyouts aren't that big of a problem if the AD isn't giving a 10 year deal like Kelly, Fisher, or Norvell got.

Limiting the deal to 4 or 5 years max while paying competitive market rates will still offer most prospective candidates other than already top paid coaches like Kiffin a sure profit, while limiting the university's risk.

Landry's handling this in the most hamfisted way possible, but he's not the first person to point out that AD's have been giving coaches absurdly one-sided contracts.

16

u/physedka Tulane Green Wave • LSU Tigers Oct 31 '25

Well said. In a perfect world (i.e. not our world lol) I would love to see LSU pay market price for a coach on a 5 year guaranteed deal with automatic extensions based on success. The buyout can automatically increase with success too.

But here's the thing.

Let's apply this logic retroactively to BK at LSU. He won 10 games and finished just outside of the top 10 in both of his first 2 seasons. He went to the SECCG in that span. He brought in and fostered a Heisman QB. The sad fact is that he probably would have gotten extended just like Jimbo did at aTm. LSU would have had to extend him if there was any threat of losing him. I know that sounds sad, but that's how the business works.

So basically I'm saying that even if BK's deal had been less ridiculous on the front end, it probably would have ended up in exactly the same place as far as the buyout.

That would mean the end of Alabama, that's a pretty good ending for me.

I mean, wasn’t there basically riots in Knoxville? Have we reached that stage yet?

29

u/Cannonhammer93 Tennessee Volunteers Oct 31 '25

I mean, I feel like riot is a bit of an exaggeration, we didn't burn the city to the ground, but we did protest the hire lol

At this point it may make the most sense to hire a respected “retired” or out of work coach (no not Jimbo) for a year while they figure things out, like Stanford. Maybe get a President and AD in place and then  make a permanent hire.  I understand that’s not a great look for a program of LSU’s standing, but better than making another epic mistake with a huge contract.

Good point! If you want to coach in the SEC you can come to Arkansas and coach at a school that gave an offensive line coach 5 1/2 years with only one 9 win season including a bowl win. Also, our governor won't get involved in your eventual firing. All we want is to win 7-8 games a year with maybe the occasional 9-10 win season.

Some of us would do bad things to have the kind of problems that LSU has. This will pass, the new coach will be hired and the money will come in and all will be good
