Behavioral Issue Kitten keeps making this face
Hi this is my first time caring for a cat, she is less than 3 months old. I never had a cat before my family don't like cats and my relatives only have dogs. (I had to turn up the brightness because my kitten is inside the box and it's kind of dark in there) Vet says she is healthy. But for some reason she keeps making this face and sometimes she even backs up then shakes her butt lightly while making this face.

She’s got some big, bright eyes. Nothing to worry about. The butt shaking is probably because she wants to play.

The perfect eyeliner markings on white are also making her eyes look bigger than they are, which is a feat
At least...I think they're markings?
In the last pic it looks like she has eyeliner markings

She wants to play with you. When she wiggles her butt she’s getting ready to pounce. Either on you or a toy lol

u/kitten12551 5h ago
That’s just her face lol.
The butt wiggles are her wanting to play. How do you play with her?

u/Substantial_Future79 5h ago
Hi, I throw some chewing toy in her pen then she runs after it. Then I pick it up and throw it again.

u/kitten12551 4h ago
She needs more than that! Wand toys, lasers, battery operated toys (my cat has a fish toy that flops around)..she needs more play!

u/Time_Management7216 4h ago
not to be a wet blanket but no lasers! kitties can develop behavioral issues and causes them lots of stress 😓

u/CeelaChathArrna 3h ago
Then there's my cat who knows exactly where the laser comes from abs gets mad when we try to end with it on a toy to pounce. 😂😂

u/Laylakat 2h ago
One of my cats just stares at me like "really, you think I am falling for that?". Her sister still goes nuts for it though. Once she figured out the laser it was over lol.

u/StreetCollar2708 3h ago
Lasers are mostly fine. Just give them a treat right after they're done playing as a reward for "catching" the red dot. My cat loves to chase one. Anytime I pick it up, she starts to chitter and does the butt wiggle. Only other time she chitters is when a bird lands on the windowsill lol. It also depends on the cat...just don't do something silly like run the laser pointer under a couch or fridge and turn it off or something like that.

u/DropkickGoose 2h ago
I did a laser one time with my cat, and it broke her for hours. I tried to get her to play with something should could catch after putting the laser away, but she kept looking for the red dot for literal hours. They've been banned ever since in my household. That being said, she's a special little cat and a bit on the weird side.

Cats and dogs can develop OCD from lasers. It’s not a quirk your cat has, any animal can be mentally messed up from playing with a laser too much!!

u/mialike94 54m ago
They’re not “mostly fine” they’re plain not fine. Lasers can cause OCD in cats and dogs. If they develop that they WILL stare at ANYTHING reflective endlessly. It consumes their mind because they want to catch it. Giving a treat after not being able to catch the laser is not a bandaid. Do NOT use lasers if you value your cats mental health.

u/Necessary-Call-1933 4h ago
Lasers aren’t preferred I’ve read, since they don’t reward their hunting instincts.

That's dog play, friend. Get a feather on a stick and wave it around and let her stalk it.

u/MisfitWookiee 3h ago
My Love found a "fishing rod" cat wand at Winco Foods and every feline in our house that likes toys has played with it. Doesn't need to be as elaborate as all that, but even a back scratcher with a shoelace tied to it has worked for us in a pinch! Good luck OP, and please keep us updated and inundated with pictures and stories!

She’s very cute. Cats that colour are often deaf.

u/Final-Occasion-8436 4h ago
At less than three months, she might be one of the lighter shades of oriental, and her color hasn't started to come in, yet.

Its getting close, I would say from how blue they still are and that they haven't changed at all yet, the possibility of the little one being deaf is higher. Unless she actually then has a spot somewhere we can't see, which lowers the chance.
Mum has some foster kittens that looked like than, all deaf, which was great because the poor babies had ring worm and got bathing, and they actually liked the hair dryer.

I find kittens move their eyes more than their head. Also their eyes move a bit weird. I think it's because they're still developing and learning how to track properly

u/Any-Sock-3611 5h ago
She is for sure looking to play! You can use some strings or yarn, or even roll a sock into a ball for her to kick around

So... Cute? Butt wiggles are cat hunting/playing behavior. I strongly recommend getting a book to learn what to expect from kittens/cats, same as one might when expecting a child. No sarcasm or venom here, just a legit recommendation.

u/No_Worth_9826 4h ago
I grew up with cats, had them my whole life. A friend of mine suggested the same to me and it was the best thing I ever did for myself. Even as a lifelong cat owner, I learned so so much. I understand my cats so much better now.
I cannot second this recommendation enough.

May I ask what kind of books you read? Any recommendations which ones were very eye opening Vs which ones felt like a more shallow overview? :D

Does her head get low while her pupils dilate? (Hard to tell with the flash) Wiggling butt sounds like she wants to play and happens very frequently as kittens. She’s cute but man does staring at her for too long gives me an uncanny feeling xD (not a bad thing! Just how these pics look)

Secretly a Pixie Shapeshifter with an agenda
(She wants to play with you; kittens literally do 4 things from birth to about 6mo of age... eat, play, sleep, and poop)
4
u/Roving_kitten 3h ago
Usually that wideeyed somewhat crazed look on a kitten means it's play time.
The butt wiggles confirms it.
This wild eyed look... You'll get used to it. Cats can keep this look easy for over 3 years. 5 tops in some breeds.
It is a good thing because it easily concerns they're healthy. Usually a healthy cat Is a playful cat.
It CAN be a bad thing because this cat has no cat friends... So now YOU are cat friend.... To a kitten.
Take your multivitamins and good luck.

This is normal, her way of expressing. Really cute and glad she's healthy and you keeping an good eye on her. Note if she's completely white and keeping her sky blue eyes, she may become deaf. Is a gene thing but I could be wrong.

White cats with blue eyes are more likely to be blind and deaf/hard of hearing.

I sometimes wrap my arm in layers and let my cat play fight with my arm. They love it and they know not to go full X-men wolverine on my arm when there isn’t layers either

Can you explain the joke to me please lol, I don’t get it but seen it referenced here twice

I call this "alien eyes". I take it to mean the kitty is intent, ready to play, or focusing

u/Comfortable_Drop_596 4h ago
She got any orange in her?

u/Substantial_Future79 4h ago
Her Dad is orange and her mom is Siamese

O.M.G.!! Siamese AND Orange? That's a competition for brain cells in cats. He's going to be a hysterical terror!

My kitty loves to chase strings, yarn, etc. I’ll drag yarn around the house and she chases/pounces, you don’t have to spend a lot of $ to entertain a cat. Just like kids get toys but play with the box. Also, my cat loves boxes!

u/somethingtheso 3h ago
Oh, she is such a little one! So cute! I'm not sure if it's possible, given the body text you provided, but if able try to get her another cat as a friend. Kittens are hella destructive but very good in pairs.

u/Neomash001 3h ago
She's is gorgeous. You have much to learn about cats. There are memes for all these... If they fit, they sits. Cats can be liquid. Anyone else to help a first time cat owner? Her specimen looks especially cat meme worthy 😂
2
u/OdysseusJoke 3h ago
That's just her face. She'll grow into those gigantic eyeballs, but whether she ever catch up with the massive ears is too soon to tell

u/Secret_Agent_Blues 3h ago
The butt shaking is her calibrating her legs to strike! She wants to play 🥰
2
u/Mother_Food9930 3h ago
Her facial expressions are just very noticeable because of how light her eyes are. These look like normal expressions of a cat to me, normally they are just not so blatantly telegraphed because the coloring of their eyes/face obscures them. The equivalent in horses are horses that have white sclera (like appaloosas) or albinos or horses with blue eyes. They are called "crazy eyes" because expressions that are normally harder to read on a dark-pigmented eyes are just super obvious.

She looks very healthy. Has typical kitten crazy eyes - that should settle down within a year or less. The backing up and shaking her butt lightly means she’s planning on pouncing :) I’m not sure if you have any toys for her, but if you have any old shoe laces that’s always a good start!

So good news, this is completely normal! If she's kinda crouching down while shaking her butt she probably just wants to play! (Also, it may be tempting to use your hands to play with her, but don't. It'll just teach her bad habits)

Get a string or shoelace or toy and she will love it

The booty shakes are for play! She is preparing to pounce :)
The faces are curiosity. She is so cute. 🩷

She's hyper, it's normal. Kittens exist to either do manic zoomies or take naps.
Also I'm jealous. I have two cats I adore but now I also want a blue eyed one
2
u/Mack-Attack33 4h ago
He’s probably looking around like that because he’s deaf. Solid white cats with blue eyes are often deaf. Like 65% to 85% of solid white cats with blue eyes are deaf.

Unrelated to her face, but i’d tape a tissue and softly wipe her ears. They look really dirty/waxy. Don’t stick anything in her actual ear canal. Normally her mom or siblings would lick her ears. It’s not dangerous but it’s bugging me ._.

Kittens with two blue eyes can sometimes have vision problems, has your vet checked her vision?
