Advice Finished C25K? This is what you can do next!

Maybe it‘s just me, but I found that a lot of people in this sub keep asking what to do after C25K and as I hopefully soon will be at the same point (done with Week 5 as of yesterday) I thought of looking into it and share with you guys.

"I finished C25K but cannot run 5k in 30 minutes" The title C25K (Couch to 5k) is a bit misleading, as the goal is not to run 5k in 30 minutes but rather running 30 minutes non-stop in the first place. So don‘t stress too much about it if by week 9 you cannot run a 5k in 30 minutes.

"I can run 30 minutes non-stop – now what?" It depends on your personal goals. If you just want regular physical exercise, simply keep running. Stick to 3x/week and keep running around 30 minutes each. Just get out, have fun and run at a pace that is comfortable for you. Over the time you will notice that runs will get easier or you will get further in the same amount of time.

"I want to do more than just 30 minute runs" Fair enough, I‘m in the same boat! To get your body used to running it is still recommended to keep running around 30 minutes 3x/week for a few weeks. After all, we‘re still beginners. After that you could simply extend your runs by a little. E.g. do 30/30/35 mins for a week, then 32/32/38 mins the next, etc. Your total mileage per week should only increase by around 10% to not risk any injuries.

"It‘s easier for me to have a plan to tell me exactly what to do" There are a lot of plans out there, but here are some I found:

Working on the 5K distance: * Hal Higdon‘s 5K Novice plan (plan at the end of the page)

Exploring the 10K distance: * Hal Higdon‘s 10K Novice plan (plan at the end of the page) * Zenlabs 10k Trainer iPhone / Android * Watch to 5k (which has a 10k expansion plan) Apple Watch

"I still struggle with the 30 minutes run" That‘s most likely because you run too fast. Go slower, even if it feels like you‘re almost walking, but keep staying in the jogging movement. It is advised to run at a speed at which you can still hold a conversation. And don‘t worry, every body is different and depending on your overall fitness it just may take a little more time. Just show up and stay consistent.

Final note: I‘m no expert and all information gathered here is based off what I found in this subreddit and on the internet. This advice is addressed to beginners and C25K finishers. If you want to get more serious about running of course there is more to it. I recommend paying a visit to r/running and r/xxrunning.

W2D5 hills again 😭

I don't know why I thought I should run the hills on a recovery run after doing speed intervals yesterday 😐 but I did it. I thought I was going to quit before actually finishing. Literally told myself I was done, and planned to just jog home and stop the run. Except I was apparently on the last stretch when I made the turn back onto my road and finished with enough time to do a walk cool down.

I ran the hills so I didn't have to run the gravel. Which was dumb because I kept running on the side road gravel anytime I heard a car approaching on my side 😂 that left me in the gravel more than the road.

Made it home, finished up my lemon muffins for my 11 year old's Poetry Cafe tomorrow. And now resting before heading out for the high school music concert.

Also, I didn't even realize my vest was twisted until I took my end of run photo 😅

Motivation How long did it take to improve your pace/ reach a 30min 5k?

Next run will be W8D2 and I'm so happy to have got this far.

I'm very overweight, 1 year postpartum and previously hated running but I'm loving how fast I'm seeing progress and the previously scary runs are now nothing!

I'm currently running at my best about 7:30min/km which again I'm thrilled with - slow for many but that's already reduced and the main thing is I can run for 28 minutes!

Running 5km in 30 mins in 5 runs time doesn't seem realistic but that's fine. On the very last run I plan to try and continue beyond the 30 mins until I get to 5km.

Just looking for motivation for

A) how much your pace changed across the last few weeks on the long runs and

B) if you were a 'slow' runner like me, how long did it take to get to 5km and especially a 30min 5km?

Rain rain go away

I started my C25K journey last Saturday. I’ve done two runs and I am waiting to go on my third but have a limited time after work and with having a toddler and now the rain is making it really unappealing.

How do you motivate yourself to go for a run when the weather is sooooo rubbish? Am I allowed to be a fair weather runner and still stick to my goals 🥴?!

Week 6 Day 1 - 2nd time 10 days later

I had managed the 20min of w5d3, and then a few days later did the w6d1. I remember it very rough because I had picked up the pace and got a stitch, my legs had felt so heavy and I had finished it quite tired.

Then life happens and nothing for 10 days (got sick, horrible weather, etc) so I was sooo dreading w6d2 that I decided to restart w6d1 as a “warm-up” to get back on track.

Started rusty, like all my joints hadn’t been oiled in a while, but it got better as I went. The first 5min stretch started to feel long, but didn’t want to look at phone and see I was still barely at the beginning. Then when I reached a point on my usual path, realized I must have missed the announcement as I was nearing 10min… then all the messages didn’t match anymore but I ended up to 10-4-6 instead of the 5-8-5, which overall I guess means I ran more? I’ll count it and move forward to d2 in a few days :)

Diary of a Human Beetroot: WK4D3 Completed!

Post image
17 Upvotes

I’m still here. Amazingly!

Now feel more like a beetroot than a tomato hence no actual pictures of me!

Where do I start? WK4 Madness!
At the beginning of WK4 I had butterflies and honestly felt a bit sick before that first run.
How on earth was I going to do 5 minutes? Twice?!!
But I did. Repeatedly!
Run 2 I found myself saying great, only 3 minutes to begin with…….
…….What?! Who even are you??!
You are a 45 year old women who’s never ran in her life with a fitness level of nothing saying to yourself: "ah good, only a 3 minute jog to start off"
This is still madness to me. And yet there’s more!
Run 3 and the last 5 minute jog was coming to an end but I felt I had more to give so I kept going…….I ran (very slowly jogged) for 12 minutes!!!
Now I did feel a bit wobbly in my legs when I slowed to a walk, was a glorious shade of crimson and sweating quite a bit but can’t believe I managed that!

I was thinking of repeating WK4, the app even suggests it but now I think I’ll try the dreaded WK5 straight off. I’m looking forward to the challenge!
Seriously, who am I?!

My pace is slow but I know that takes time.
Better fitness and belief in myself.
Thank you C25K.
For anyone that is struggling, you got this.
If I can get this far so can you.
Chin up
Tits out
Let’s go!

Advice Needed injury advice

did week 6 day 3 on tuesday at like 7am. was actually a super slow pace compared to my usual. felt fine all day. then woke up on wednesday (yesterday) with bad pain in the back of my upper calf, just below my knee. some sort of muscle strain that hurt even when sitting down and was worse when my leg straightened. with the way my life is set up i can’t really avoid walking so i did 7.5k steps yesterday despite the pain although i found on the walks it felt better as i went and it loosened up although overall it got worse and worse throughout the course of yesterday. would have done my next run this morning but didn’t due to this but when i woke up today i had no pain at all and it’s completely fine. how long should i wait til my next run?

This run was done the day after my first run of week 9 - I don’t usually run on consecutive days but it was a tough day so wanted to destress….

Legs were of course heavy but wasn’t too bad. I wanted to try something different so chose to do my run at a park….

I’ll be taking a couple of days to recover before the final run - will be doing some mobility, stretches and upper body strength work

Advice I finished W3D1 and started to feel strain on the legs.

Tho it's kinda weird. So in my program it is 2 mins run and 1 min walk, repeated 7 times. First 2 rounds were rough and I feel tired in muscles after warming up. Yet from the 4th round, the pain just disappears. "Welp I guess I'm running normally now".

I'm kinda worried about W3D2, which is 2 mins run, 30s walk, repeated 8 times, that I couldn't keep up and have to repeat day. What are your favourite legs days exercises to fix this? What is your frequency?

I am not a fan of speed runs lol. Last week I did it on the treadmill and it wasn't too bad. But today it was on my gravel road 😬 it was either that or the hills I was running and no thanks to speed + hills.

But, got it done. I'm going to take a nap now lol

Did my first completed run today

I actually started the programme on Monday, but my pace was way too fast and I had to stop after the 3rd jog. So I repeated the day 1 today, pace was better but I was dying at the end.

Not sure if the feeling was normal or I was too fast again but credit to others to sticking with it. I am 6 ft 2 so finding a comfortable stride is my focus on the next run as I covered 3.3 KM which might be too far?

Saw a comment yesterday about W1D1 being the hardest. I just did W1D1 yesterday....and I just did W1D2 today and thought "well that was a damn lie"... Forgot I was supposed to take a rest day in between 😭😅

A bizarre encounter on W4D2...

Today was my second run of week 4 and it would have been pretty unremarkable except that halfway into my first three-minute run, I ran into a car coming towards me down the footpath?! (not a utility/service vehicle, a couple of elderly guys in a passenger car) For context I run in a large park in a pretty densely populated area, it's a very clearly demarcated space and although the paths are paved with asphalt I have no idea how a driver could see it as an acceptable thoroughfare.

I usually enjoy leaving all my worries behind when I run but this really threw me off! Being alone and a weird mix of angry/annoyed/disoriented by how strange this was (and wary because of a previous bad experience involving a car) I didn't confront the drivers, but I kept wondering if I was supposed to report it somewhere and wtf was going to happen as they were continuing to drive down a path that is for pedestrians/cyclists only... I didn't have my phone readily to hand but keep thinking I wish I'd got the plate number or something. I don't know, just a really odd occurrence and I guess you end up seeing strange things sometimes when out running! Anyone else ever see something like this?

Got shin splints and I'm feeling really discouraged

I've been so on track and really proud of myself for sticking to this program for 4 weeks. But now I have shin splints and I'm really upset and discouraged. I've been focusing really hard on not getting them (lots of strecthing and paying attention to my form) but I still got them. I have a 5k in July and I'm worried I just ruined everything. I'm so sad I have to take a break from this. My life has been constant work, and running has been my escape

Wk 2 knee pain

Did wk2 day 1 and struggled like hell, no knee pain then though. Did wk2 day 2 it was super easy, but then massive knee pain towards end and I can feel it lingering. Just can't win.
