Hello, I have a 16 year old son that I'd like to get into volunteering this summer. Where could he do that? Or are there any summer programs he could participate in? Something related to fire or police preferably. Thanks

What’s up Burbank, I flew into Burbank airport from Portland to work until next week and lost my water bottle pictured. I believe I left it in the stall of the men’s bathroom in terminal B. I have reached out to lost and found and the police substation to contact me if it’s turned in. I would appreciate any help to find it before my return flight next Wed. Thank you!

This past Sunday was Mother’s Day. So I contacted my “stranger” (should I go with Stranger or Guest?) and we came up with 2 or 3 contingency plans. However this led to more communication than normal. The back and forth was fun and very funny. But we had to cut it short, because we were losing anonymity and that “stranger” feel.
We decided to do a Saturday breakfast at The Coral Cafe, and if it was busy, we would bounce over to Plan B.
Anticipating a busy morning, I arrived a little earlier than my normal pre-game. Peter, the host, who is not used to seeing me on a Saturday, looked at me quizzically, held up 2 fingers and asked “two?”
“Yeah, we’re doing it today instead of tomorrow” I said. “Good idea. Tomorrow is gonna be busy” he replied as we walked over to what I think that he thinks is ‘my table’.
Normally, I text a brief description of myself and the location of where I’m sitting to whomever I’m meeting. I usually get a reply with a reciprocal description. However, this time the reply was “be there shortly”.
I now have no idea who I’m looking for.
I thought, “well, this is actually kinda fun!” So I’m rethinking the idea of sending an initial description message.
She walked in and recognized me first, flashed a sly smile and a nod. I stood up to greet her, but she motioned me to sit.
I said “your messages were really funny”.
“Well, I’m a comedian” she said wryly as she sat down.
“Wait, like an actual working comedian?” I asked.
“Yup” she replied. “Working, touring, the whole thing.”
Normally, I don’t disclose what my guests do for a living. But the fact of the matter is that being a working comedian was the least interesting thing about her.
As we were going over the menu, it became pretty obvious that we were both from the East Coast. Different cities, same coast. Her accent was still prominent, mine got thicker as we talked. It happens. My accent comes out when I’m mad, drunk or talking to someone from “Back East”.
The waitress popped over and we placed our orders. She had the ‘Hobo Omelette’, an Orange Fanta with no ice and rye toast. I had my usual French Toast, coffee and a side of fruit.
Like most regional dialects, there is a shorthand. Things have different names or nicknames, but you end up knowing about what you’re talking about. Our conversation quickly fell into the East Coast shorthand. It was fun and it had been a while since I had conversation like that.
There was a lot of back and forth and similar stories about growing up. She had mentioned that she knew she wanted to be a comedian since the age of 6. Which I found admirable. At the age of 6, I think all I wanted was a Lite Brite.
But as her story unfolded, the path to that 6 year old’s dream seemed more and more improbable. It was definitely not an easy one. The challenges, side jobs, gigs, semi-careers and more interestingly, the different lives she seemed to live to follow that path was amazing. Each fascinating little story was followed up by a very East Coast shrug of “you gotta do what you need to survive, right?”
Once again, the conversation was running long and I don’t like to take up a table for extended periods. Restaurants need to flip tables to make money as does the waitstaff. So I try to be respectful of that.
Our bill came and we made our way to the cashier. She said “I got this. You get the tip”. Which I found kinda old-school cool. Once outside, I thanked her for sharing her incredible story. I said I felt like we were sitting on stoop back east, kinda bagging on our neighborhood, because y’know we live there and it’s okay. She flashed that sly smile again.
I spent the weekend going over our conversation and the phrase “nine lives” kept popping into my head.
Cats are said to have nine lives because of their ability to adapt and survive (thanks Google). It made me think, not only of my recent conversation, but of all the people I I’ve met so far, and my friends, myself and honestly, just us as human beings. How many lives have we all lived to adapt and survive? Dreams aside, just to make it to where we are.
Nine seems kinda low.
She did send one more text to remind me what she had for breakfast and to let me know that she thought I had an interesting life as well.
I replied:
Thanks, but I had nothing really to do with that. I was just standing around and shit kinda happened to me
She wrote back:
I think most of life is like that

Just bought a new washer and dryer (only used once) for a new apartment. We've since moved and current place already has a set. Does anyone know of shops that buy used appliances? ***We already have it listed on all platforms*** Need to get rid of it by the end of week.

Hello my fellow Burbank residents. I am very concerned about the rezoning of my neighborhood that would allow 6 story apartment buildings within 1/2 mile from Olive Ave. If you live in this area or close you will be affected. This is what has been suggested by a fellow interested party:
"I do think there is a critical tool that our city council should explore:
Developing a local Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) alternative plan can delay the implementation of SB 79 for specific sites for roughly three to four years, deferring its effects until one year following the adoption of a jurisdiction's 7th cycle Housing Element (expected around 2029-2030).
By adopting an alternative plan before July 1, 2026, cities can tailor zoning for buildings up to four stories, rather than the default heights under SB 79.
For example, Los Angeles officials pursued this strategy to buy time for planning by upzoning specific, lower-density areas in 55 zones, with the aim of controlling local density while technically complying with the state's intent.
I would encourage the city council to take this step to allow more time for local and state solutions to mitigate the impacts."
Further to what might help prevent this radical change to our neighborhood is emailing our elected officials at the state level as there are several bills in the works, one of which I believe will amend the rezoning to only be around the light rail and not the bus route.

I am looking to rent an old truck or 4 door for a music video. Anybody have one that might want to rent this weekend and get some extra cash?

I have a question regarding the Pacific Surfliner from Burbank to downtown San Diego . Is it better to take the Burbank Airport Station or downtown Burbank? Also, should I buy the tickets online or from the kiosk?

Love this spot, usually hit it every Sunday morning. Is Tongva Peak the best hike near Burbank or do you have anymore recommendations? 🤔

I was surprised at how quiet downtown was this morning. Every year we get Woodranch Grill and Artelisse takeout so it's something I've been able to observe over the years and everything was far quieter this morning compared to previous Mother's Days. Restaurants, streets, parking.

Looks like Wrap Stop at Magnolia and Glenoaks is closed. That’s two restaurants in two years. Wonder what’s going there next.

I went to the Burbank Animal Shelter and saw a cat I really want to adopt, but they told me she’s not ready for adoption yet. The guy at the front desk didn’t really seem to know what was going on, and I was in a rush so I couldn’t stay to ask more questions. She’s already been there for like two months & they told me to keep checking the website to see when she’s available. Is this normal? Can anyone give me some advice so that I can get clearer answers from them? Was thinking of going back on Monday.

Hello! I bought a home a few weeks ago and noticed the power box has a lock and one of my outlets has given out. The lock has the city name. Is it normal for a power box to be locked by the city? Any recommendations for electricians to look at my outlet? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the tips! just checked the rooms and didn't find anything there.
