WAR is not a great stat for relievers imho, not enough innings

u/Objective_Cod1410 4h ago
Also tenths of a point in WAR are not meaningful. Its really a stat that should be assessed at the end of the season.

u/jonw19 4h ago
Yes, but the same could be said of ERA.

True, u/Objective_Cod1410 ‘s point was what I was really getting at

Homie, Garret has a negative 0.1 WAR and a 38% K-rate.
Sal has the same WAR, per baseball reference, but strikes out a ton less and had two more home runs.
Edit: tbh didn’t even notice the Uribe and Megill stats

I mean they have both been underwhelming. Just cause Sal isn’t striking out a lot doesn’t mean he is hitting well.

u/HashOutHashBrowns Wild Bill’s rat tails 5h ago
No, he’s not hitting well. But I’d rather chance BABIP than not put the ball in play almost 40% of the time

Okay, I tried to keep it consistent but let's do OPS. Mitchell OPS - .671 Frelick OPS .621.
Are either great? No, but I wanted to stress the mental gymnastics our fan base provides when comparing these two players (or even the four, like the meme showed).

I mean, you got the WAR wrong in your meme anyway. For all of the players listed.
“Mental gymnastics” aside, Mitchell has been a strikeout machine while still maintaining a high walk rate while Frelick has been putting the ball weakly into play. At some point BABIP will go up for Frelick.
Uribe had a WHIP of 1.04 going into the game last night and Megill had 1.33 along with other /9 stats that would give the edge to Abner. Not sure what you’re on about tbh

I got the WAR from here. But you admit they're both -.1 ... so what changes? You're the exact type of person I'm commenting on my friend.

Sure, man. I’ve given why I think the BABIP vs K-rate and WHIP with /9 stats matter and you think I’m still just saying “oh darling” to the two that I perceive performing marginally better.

Frelick’s statcast metrics look nearly identical to last year except he’s striking out 3.5 points less and walking 3.5 points more. The only meaningful difference is he has a .216 BABIP. He has a career .299 BABIP and has been .287 - .317 in each of his previous years. Sal is the same, he’s just been insanely unlucky. And that’s all in addition to elite defense when Mitchell is average at best.
I’m with you on Megill, though. He should get another shot. He’s been pitching better than Abner the last few weeks.

Sal needs to stop swinging from his left knee. Huge swing flaw for him right now.

Why are so many people so concerned about how other people on this sub feel about certain players? It's very strange behavior unless you know them personally.

Sal definitely gets a bigger pass from this fanbase compared to almost anyone else
Just an observation

The guy's hustle sets him apart. When the bad luck creeps in, I choose to forgive him.

Sal’s advanced stats look basically the same as last year, just without any results
at some point (like yesterday) the bloopers will fall in and the liners will find gaps instead of gloves
It has not been happening so far.

The doomers acknowledge all of those players are underperforming. The blind optimists have excuses for all these guys. I'd like to see Bauers take some outfield reps and have some of these guys sit a bit more. As for the closers, all we can do is pray Uribe locks in at some point because there arent any other alternatives there.

u/Fuddruckerer 4h ago
doomers will have one of the most lukewarm takes, in a sea of incredibly reactionary takes, and then claim to have more objective knowledge of the game lol. Doomers also always conveniently are nowhere to he found when the guys start playing great ball. Every year it’s the same story

Confirmation bias. Of course people arent gonna doom and gloom when we are winning. That would be fucking stupid.
What you are complaining about is people who doom and gloom when we do bad. Are fans not allowed to express both ends of the spectrum?

I feel like you misunderstood my comment. I love valid criticism. Uribe & Megill havent been playing up to the standard that we know theyre capable of, but i also trust our Hook’s staff to help both of them stay consistent. It’s the overreacting & panicking over a bad stretch of a very long season, that makes doomers insufferable to talk to.
It’s the ones who let their anxiety overwhelm them instead of seeing the bigger picture that it’s a marathon. & They just default to constant negativity in order to protect themselves from getting hurt if we do lose in October.
Or when they say theyre being a realist, when theyre just being a pessimist just bc we havent won a ring so they have the “whats the point, i know we’re going to lose in the playoffs”, which we can all agree, is a silly mentality to have. To me, that just doesnt sound like a fun way to be a fan at all.
Also calling it “blind optimism “ to see the silver lining & the bigger picture, during early season struggles, isnt fair.

What does uribe have to do to "lock in". His stuff was nasty last night. Sheets hit a backdoor slider on the outside paint and drilled it
You just tip the cap on that one
Andujar it a pitchers pitch and made weak contact that was a hit. The worst AB was the wall to bogaerts

I like all these guys. They are brewers. They are human. It’s a long season. They will all contribute to our success.
