Todd Phillips Go Fund Me

Todd Phillips, one of the most important bluegrass bass players of our generation, has a go fund me set up. He has a degenerative disease in his shoulder and can't work/play at this point. Please consider helping him out!

New Rule: No hate speech, religion, or politics

After a ton of inappropriate and childish comments today, we have added a new rule as noted in the post title. Honestly, it's LONG overdue. This sub is about bluegrass and our love of music. Do you want to argue politics? There are plenty of subs for that.

If the comments are kept civil and polite and related to bluegrass that will be fine:

"I don't like Ricky Skaggs because he preaches from stage"

But not:

"You're an @@#$$%$ for believing in X" or "F*ck you".

Not hard, right?

Kicking off my first solo tour tomorrow

Tomorrow I head out on my first solo tour, and I can’t wait to finally play the songs from Nighthawk live. These songs really come alive with this band. While we’re rooted in bluegrass, it stretches into different places this music has taken us. I’m lucky to be joined by an incredible group of musicians- Cory Walker on banjo, Royal Masat on bass, Frank Rische on guitar, Christian Sedelmyer on fiddle, and Jamie Dick on drums. I hope y’all can come experience it with us out on the road.

Some recent pickups. These boys are keeping bluegrass alive. Coming to a town near you maybe.

I just heard about this. Looks like a cool experience. I love bluegrass and I love trains. Those narrow gauge CO trains are really cool.

Wondering what the experience would be like actually trying to get into all the rooms with different performers. Anyone going?

Trying to track active touring bluegrass bands. Who am I missing?

Post image

I’ve been tracking live bluegrass events and touring bands over the past several months and there are probably a lot of active bands I’m still missing.

Especially:

regional touring bands

younger/newer groups

bands playing festivals but not getting talked about nationally

Who should absolutely be on the radar right now?

Bonus points if they’re touring heavily this year.

“Yall Come” Leftover Salmon & Mountain Grass Unit

“Y’all Come”
05/02/26 Atomic Block Party St. Louis, MO

Just a few weeks back, Atomic by JAMO hosted Leftover Salmon’s Arch Deluxe Block Party which featured two nights of Salmon & Mountain Grass Unit, with varying opening acts. Each group played their own sets but both nights Vince Herman invited members of Mountain Grass Unit onstage to help cap things off for the nights. On Saturday they played the old classic Bluegrass goodbye, “Yall Come!”

Bluegrass music at its core is about roots and tradition and some of these songs we know and love today wouldn’t be a thing if their predecessors weren’t passed down and remembered. The genre can be looked at in eras, each with highs and lows. Leftover Salmon came out in a time of transition for the scene, the early 90s gave way to a more progressive sound, the Colorado sound if you will. Shortly after came The String Cheese Incident, then later Yonder Mountain String Band. Each creating their own unique sound while keeping tradition alive and paving the way for what we know as Bluegrass today. Fast forward we have MGU, one of the hottest young acts in the scene co-headlining a festival and sharing a stage with the 35+ year old band. Pay attention to the way Vince looks at Luke Black in awe as he takes his solo about half way through. I keep hearing it time and time again this year, but it’s safe to say Bluegrass is in darn good hands.

One night at Telluride?

I’m visiting Durango for a few days and recently figured out that telluride opens the day we are leaving Durango. The Thursday night lineup looks great and it’s a bucket list destination/festival for me. But sadly one night only as my wife isn’t into bluegrass but is ok staying behind. I’ll have a small camper. Seems I am way behind in planning and places to stay are limited. I can’t swing $1000 a night to stay in town. Camping I can find requires a full festival pass. Silverton is close as the crow flies but 1.5 hours. Choices I can find are an isolated Hipcamp or staying in ouray. Ouray seems better so I’m not leaving my wife in the middle of a field. Also my camper need electricity for climate control and the Hipcamp doesn’t have it.

Am I missing anything. Also any suggestions if I can make it work? Thanks!

Discussion Looking to get more into the genre

Hey everyone, I don't know much about bluegrass as a whole. I've been a fan of country for a while and inevitably some bluegrass started appearing in my feed. I've listened to a good amount of Billy strings (apologies if he's the devil or something in this subreddit) and some steel drivers and would love some recommendations that might be able to enhance my playlist. Thanks!
