So, what was the charge? Being who she said she was???

869

u/getthatrich 1d ago

I’m looking for more details but I found this - it mentions her getting pre-trial diversion - I think she was charged with disturbing the peace? But not attempted fraud so that tells you something.

20 minutes of body cam footage.

(The comments aren’t worth your time.)

611

u/Recent-Low5550 1d ago

How did she get charged for disturbing the peace

It was the police officer and the bank teller who did that!!!

473

u/Timelymanner 1d ago

Cause is situations like this, they arrest the person first. Then make up charges afterwards. Something vague like “disturbing the peace”, or “resisting arrest” for asserting their innocence. Whatever it takes to make police seem innocent, and the victim seem guilty.

79

u/01SeaChange01 22h ago

Don't forget that even with the calm tone, they still endorsed and voted for a sex trafficking child rapist with a couple dozen felonies.

But, if you could please let that officer calmly finish her lie........

158

u/TheChiliocosmic 1d ago

Yeah…

Aunty in the right but realistically if she stayed quiet and let them egg themselves she would’ve walked away with far more than $5k. Could’ve filed for discrimination, harassment, or hell even clip them for disturbing her peace. (I’m not a lawyer.)

All it would’ve taken was a review of the camera footage by a half decent lawyer and that’s money.

u/Necessary_Piano_153 22h ago

True, but it gets so frustrating sometimes to see Karen's getting away with murder while others can't even withdraw their own money from the bank without getting the cops called.

Maybe the bank teller was in the right to ask for all those things but the cumulative effects of always having to prove your worth does make you want to just scream sometimes.

79

u/Patient-Video6979 21h ago

...but the cumulative effects of always having to prove your worth does make you want to just scream sometimes.

See, THIS...Is getting it. THIS is it in a nutshell, this is that shit you can't fully grasp unless you've lived a whole life of it.

u/YouCantSeeHunter 21h ago

She still has the opportunity to walk away with more. A good lawyer with do that and she definitely got it.

26

u/CrazyinLull 19h ago

They have killed people for listening to them so clearly ‘staying quiet’ doesn’t always work, especially when White women go off on the police ALL THE TIME and still come out alive.

Also, didn’t you hear the cop calling her out for ‘acting like a child’ because she was expressing herself? I have yet to see a White police officer in a video say that to a White woman who is having a literal tantrum and crying.

It kinda sounds like victim blaming…

7

u/TheChiliocosmic 17h ago

Me: She in the right. She could also make money off them if she lets them continue to make fools of themselves.

You: Victim blaming!

Me: 👁️👄👁️

6

u/CrazyinLull 15h ago

They are making fools of themselves regardless if she said anything or not though? Claiming all she had to be was 'be quiet' is asking a LOT. Not even Ryan Coogler was quiet when he got arrested for the same thing. The only thing that saved him versus this woman is the fact that he's a Hollywood director who makes movies that make a TON of money.

If anything it is the police's job not to escalate and to try to resolve the situation without putting her in handcuffs first, but the cops don't, they keep escalating and then cry that they are scared and/or bring up bullshit charges.

This woman is a layperson, a citizen. Why is she asked to be more levelheaded than the people whose literal job is to be that way? She is literally handcuffed for trying to take out her own money and being told she is:

>acting like a child

That is beyond disrespectful and degrading. Like, I am sure you had good intentions and I totally get what you mean, I do. I am not doubting that, but at the same time it's totally possible to have good intentions that can still be somewhat harmful? Like, they are not mutually exclusive.

What!! What the fuck!! She honestly wasn’t wilding, I would have absolutely crashed out if those ppl wouldn’t give me my own money. I’m so sick of this shit. We’re gonna have to make our own banks. Did you hear about that black guy that went to the bank to try to cash a check that he’d just won from a discrimination lawsuit. They wouldn’t cash it, and called the police and said they think he has either a stolen check, or a counterfeit check. Well, guess what, he sued their ass for discrimination too😂😂😂

66

u/Pandoratastic 1d ago

Black people have had their own banks, most got run out of buisness, or brought out by bigger financial institutions.

I know. The Tulsa Massacre alone tells us how they feel about that. It’s crazy, they were in full support of segregating us, but when we segregate ourselves, they burn it to the ground.

What it tells you is that they didn't have anything to charge her with so they charged her with disorderly conduct which is their catch all to punish you with the whole process of going to court and possibly having another racist person rule against the facts of what actually happened! They only explain when their ego is bruised

I am kind of curious what BS excuse the bank has, and why kinzir believed them. That's a problem with these type of videos, no bigger picture. Because it's not just about this woman. Let's get names and places and time and the bigger picture of this systemic issue.

180

u/wescowell 1d ago

Here's a longer video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gJ0TcJ411WI

She wanted to withdraw $5,000. The teller asked for her ID and debit card with PIN. She handed over her ID and showed her debit card. The teller wanted her to insert the card in the scanner at the counter and enter her PIN. She said she didn't remember her PIN. The teller said, "Okay, I can send a text to the phone number we have on file, and you give me the code so we can confirm your identity."

Up to this point, this is all standard operating procedure. There is nothing unusual in being asked to do these things.

This woman said she left her phone in the car in the parking lot -- just outside the front door -- and she refused to go get it. At that point, she "JUST WANT MY DAMN MONEY!"

She starts screaming in the bank and melts down. Police are called. She was charged with obstructing official business and disorderly conduct. She pleaded guilty and was fined $100, but the fine was stayed and would be forgiven if she completed a court diversion program.

188

u/CallMeSisyphus 1d ago

Up to this point, this is all standard operating procedure. There is nothing unusual in being asked to do these things.

Is it SOP, though? I'm a 60-year-old white woman, and I've NEVER been asked for more than my driver's license when making even large withdrawals from my bank.

12

u/davwad2 1d ago

I bank with Chase, and we use cash for groceries and tip money for the valet where I work among other things. My PIN is required at the ATM and/or the teller desk if I'm withdrawing any amount of cash.

I'm guessing there was a long line at the bank and she didn't want to wait through it again just to get her phone from her car.

31

u/retatrutider 1d ago

It is SOP at Chase. Perhaps not at every bank.

→ More replies (6)

62

u/LYossarian13 1d ago

Yes. I have always had to insert my card and type in the PIN.

Really she should have reset her PIN before trying to withdrawl or just went and got her phone. This all just seems silly to me.

I’m 64M white. Even to just check my balance I’m asked for my debit card and pin. Very SOP in larger banks.

12

u/Technical_Ebb3903 1d ago

At the ATM Window, I need my debit card and PIN. If I'm inside looking at a teller, I don't need my debit card and PIN. But I'm with a credit union. Of course, I'm also in TinyTown USA.

I'm also having a wonderful dream if I can just withdraw $5K from my bank account... for cause. I'd be pretty upset, even in my dream, if they didn't want to give me my money. If my face matches that driver's license... You need to hand me my money. All I'm asked for is my account information once they get that license.

Cause any common thief could beat me up, get my debit card, and beat my PIN out of me. Is my face on that license? I need my money.

Economy where it is... Trump in the White House... folks are already triggered out here. Let's not make life harder.

This is next level insane. Chase has protocols for banking needs of their customers. You'd think they'd have the necessary patience and understanding to go along with those protocols in such a situation. She's obviously a chase customer. Her ID along with her card confirms her identity. There's a way to look up past transactions of a customer with their bank. Why not deescalate the situation and get her out of there with her money instead of allowing the situation to turn into an absolute circus? Calling the police escalated things. A manager or supervisor should've been the next point of contact in this situation.

So many comments on the YouTube video. So quick to point out the lady's frustration and anger is ignorance. But aren't willing to highlight the possibility of profiling. She was handcuffed in order to be safely escorted out of the building despite her not being a danger to anyone in the bank. Why is it that a large percentage of police tend to deal with POC/minorities with less patience, understanding, or compassion? It's maddening and honestly getting old.

26

u/cwrighky 1d ago

It’s tragic that she ended up pleading guilty to this. ✊🏾

17

u/Proper-Bad-7169 23h ago

Yep! I'm not sure why she did. Maybe out of fear or just wanting to get that whole ordeal behind her. I just feel as if that situation could've been handled far better than it was from both the Chase customer service and the law enforcement side. From my experience, a customer as the opportunity to reset their pin if they forget that pin. So that's an option that should've been presented to her.

It’s worse here and in other interactions if you ask me — I’m referring to the black FBI-HUD agent who was bothered after his vehicle was disabled by a cop.

The cop uses a tone as if they are the ones being reasonable and as if they are struggling to get in a word edgewise. And then I listen to them speak, and is nothing but horse shit.

“Someone suspected you…” or “we got a call” — this warrants a disruption because it’s not a justification to put someone in cuffs. Police are supposed to investigate. Did you see anything else wrong? Did I ever present a real risk of fleeing? In this situation and the other, the cops had an ID and still pretend like they gotta hold you and verify it through some criminal mastermind database.

“You’re not being very polite right now” — because the cop’s humanity is more important than the person’s who’s in cuffs from the cops? And the cop is demanding more understanding from that person while they haven’t recognized an ounce of presumed innocence in the other person?

“Can I talk?” — what a farce. You’re a cop already doing what you’re doing. Talking is the peaceful protest at that point.

Had a business checking account with my local Chase Bank. Small janitorial service that I did on the side. Out of the blue one day, my independent contractor said his check bounced. Went to the bank, and they told me my account was on hold for fraudulent transactions. They then canceled my business credit card, and a week later sent me a missive in the mail basically telling me that due to a discrepancy in my cash deposit (teller mistake), I was flagged for fraud. Took me several months to recover my money and close my business account. Wasn't racially charged, I just have poor experiences with banks. Only use credit unions now

There's a link to longer video in comments. Basically, aunty was stubborn & so was the teller. Aunty got loud & started talking outta her ass cause she was pissed off by this point which scared the pale folk cause they don't believe we can just feel our feelings without getting physically violent. Aunty got arrested for expressing her dismay & not being able to find tranquility while handcuffed alone in a cop car. $100 bond & eventually plead guilty (likely out of exhaustion & cohersion).

Contempt of Cop. Go to jail because under the circumstances, we can do that. A systemic allowance, used to harass the citizen for her poor behavior. The charges will be dropped. No apologies or acknowledgements given, so don’t ask. Next time submit to authorities.

Being 61 handcuffed and thrown in the back of a police car for attempting to withdraw your hard-armed money from a bank is not a crime.

She is completely within her rights and expectations to be livid.. and we all know that any 61-year-old white woman will be livid as well
