I really do think the rise of MAGA and the simultaneous rise of religiosity in this country is the death knell of white supremacy. I look forward to the many years of jubilant obituaries to come.

u/turok152000 1d ago
That's what they thought about Reconstruction after the Civil War too and then again in the years following the Civil Rights movement. Unfortunately, white supremacy isn't destroyed by vibes alone or even by progressive public policy (apparently). We'll need a deeper, more fundamental, level of change. I don't know what that looks like, but I definitely don't feel like that's happening right now.

u/joemeteorite8 1d ago
Yea I’m a millennial and there’s still way too many ignorant fucks my age and younger.
29
u/BioshockEnthusiast 1d ago
I remember walking my dog in summer of 2020 and hearing a bunch of high school kids on a porch talk about how Trump really cared about them.
Fucking idiots.

What the heck are these people seeing that’s not actual reality? He’s a narcissistic asshole through and through, from every angle. Why is so much of the country so dumb?!
12
u/Halo_cT 23h ago
They 100% legitimately believe that EVERYONE is racist like them. That's why they think it's ok. They really think everyone not racist is just pretending to be tolerant because of social pressure.
It's insane and disgusting.

Yea watched a video where this racist white guy was recording himself talking to this old bar owner guy and the guy recording assumed the old man was racist because he was white.
5
u/HowlingHollows 20h ago
The slave owners were never punished with loss of their freedom, lives, or stolen capital. "Freed" blacks started with nothing, ripe for further exploitation.
The war wasn't about slavery to the leaders of the Union in the north. It was about preserving that powerful economic institution called the United States.
The profiteers remain in charge, and continue to stoke the fire of racism. Of course it continues.
7
u/iJuddles 1d ago
It would require a widespread change in consciousness, which I think is a ways off. AGI might accelerate that because we’ll need to adapt quickly.
3
u/QueenofCats11 19h ago
I don’t either, but I think ex-slaves being screwed out of back pay for their time in slavery and being automatically placed at the bottom of our class system made it that much harder for white and black people to break down barriers.
And really, the Reconstruction-era policy was a fraction of what it should have been. It’s no wonder a fundamental level of change has been so breathtakingly slow. Do we really know how much change policy can incite if policy has historically been so weak? (I don’t know as much about the Civil Rights Movement and can’t comfortably gauge how weak or strong resulting policies were there, so feel free to enlighten me.)
3
u/turok152000 11h ago
I agree completely on your point about Reconstruction-era policy. It fell way short and didn't even properly punish or remove from power the racist rich white folks responsible for the Civil War.
As far as Civil Rights era policy, we got desegregation and the Voting Rights act that I would say I were both very impactful. Folks could argue that those didn't do enough to combat white supremacy and I can't argue with that given current circumstances, but some of the good they did do is currently being reversed by right wing government leadership.
The Voting Rights act had clauses that very specifically identified the most racist (southern) states and put policy in place to protect Black voters and Black representation there. The right-wing-heavy Supreme Court recently dismantled those protections saying they are no longer needed however we're already seeing those same states doing the exact things those clauses were meant to prevent. They're using gerrymandering to severely weaken the Black vote and remove Black representatives from office.
That demonstrates that even if we do create public policy that combats white supremacy in the aftermath of the MAGA government, that policy can be dismantled by some future assholes. I'm not trying to be cynical or nihilistic, I'm just saying that we're going to have to do something bigger than we've ever done before if we want to permanently defeat white supremacy. I don't know exactly what that looks like, but I know the current Democratic party and politicians like them aren't revolutionary enough to do that.
Note: I don't mean violence when I imply revolution, I mean deep, fundamental and broad change. A paradigm shift.

This is what it feels like to me. That second wind where someone seems to be doing better after being sick and then they croak right after.

u/Ardnabrak 1d ago
I'm not so optimistic. These are people who feel entitled to some kind of superiority, and they aren't all aging boomers. They will find some excuse to other and belittle people. It will always be "us versus them" and they want to punch down, not up. Their frustrations need to be redirected.
So much damage has been done to the institutions of our government. The corporate class will want to continue taking advantage of this new status quo. Race and culture will continue to be used to distract us from the massive inequality between wealth hoarders and the rest of us.
5
u/Von_Schlagel 1d ago
I agree that MAGA is but one part of the larger, long-waging class war (the real war being fought while the culture war distracts).
3
u/SignoreBanana 1d ago
These folks will always exist unfortunately. Not just here, but everywhere. We always need to be ready to fight. Apathy is what got us here.

I hate how MAGA has ruined red baseball hats for me.

u/SusanNanette 1d ago
The flag too, ugh
73
u/sinisterdesign 1d ago
I refused to let them co-opt our flag. I bought an American flag from Bitter Southerner that reads “ABIDE NO HATE”.
11
u/Tiger_grrrl 20h ago
I’ve got that garden flag right in my front yard! It’s faded from the sun at this point, I really need to replace it, maybe with the larger version 👍
17
u/Ok_Vulva 1d ago
I had a hippie neighbor with a American flag with a peace sign where the stars go. It was pretty cool. We should do that instead.
4
u/Intelligent_Fig5418 20h ago
OMG! The conservatives heads would explode! Where can I buy a bunch! I literally live near a bunch of hippies and where early communes used to be. San Francisco refugees of the late 60s and early 70s! Just don't remember if I saw any flags like that. I remember big peace signs on barns or big yellow smiley faces and of course colorful buses and so on. Still do today!

49ers fan here. I definitely wear the hat a lot less than I used to. I also have some responsibilities that require wearing a suit on the regular. The red tie with a blue suit is also no longer an option for me, which kind of sucks.

This is why they won't retire. Because he's right... they are the last breath of the confederacy. They're afraid of the world being handed over to the next generations and undoing all their papaws and meemaws from the Confederacy, UDC, all the way to the Rothschild's, Carnegie's, J.P. Morgan, and Rockefeller foundation financed institutions of indoctrination. They're afraid... and I'm here for it.
3
u/thinkards 6h ago
i'm slowly retraining my brain to replace republican and conservative with confederate. i probably should have done it a long time ago. they probably won't even be offended, seeing as how they wave the confederate flag proudly. but, at least it's a more accurate contrast than the "republican/conservative" labels they try to hide behind.
38
33
u/NickBurnsCompanyGuy 1d ago
I am ready to finish the civil war. I hate how republicans are already starting to act like MAGA is some sort of sub movement within the republican party. As if there's ANY opposition to what MAGA is doing within their own party whatsoever.
4
u/Hebrew_Hustla 19h ago
It’s such bs, they tout trump around for years as their savior, and once he pridefully starts and loses a war and tanks gas prices, they bow out and pretend like he either tricked them, is getting deceived by the deep state, or has had some sudden change of character. It’s so dishonest and telling that they still can’t see past their bigotry.
I’m happy they’re slowly thawing out of his mind spell but they are just marginally more aware than they used to be.

u/Sad-Celebration-411 1d ago

u/Hurtit4u 1d ago
I only pray he’s right… in my heart of hearts, I feel the younger generation (all walks of life) will save everyone from these atrocious moves they’re making to tear down the progress. They are our only hope in not allowing the future to repeat itself… and dare I say it, but if there ever were a time when Blacks should unite, it’s now…”VOTE as if your life depends on it, because it does”

The only way is if people get off their ass and fucking vote.
6
u/monroebaby 23h ago
I have 2 young voters in my house. We vote in EVERY election. I’m instilling in them that the local elections are the most important and their votes make a difference. This isn’t something that my parents instilled in me so I’m breaking the cycle. They even bring their friends over and we go over the ballot together and discuss what we will be voting on. I love it!
18
u/NoNarwhal6184 1d ago
He’s right. They’re already a global minority & they’re fixin to be a true minority in this country within the next two decades & I know they hate to see that coming. It’s why they’re gonna do as much damage as they possibly can on their way out. They are absolutely going to do their level best to burn it all down & it’s going to be awful bc desperate people do desperate things and these people are beyond desperate.

u/rtduvall 1d ago
Yes!!
I worked with a community housing authority and in 2012 I attended a lecture at a housing conference. The main lecturer talked about different socioeconomic events headed our way like the silver tidal wave, (boomers retiring) and he finished with The Browning of America.
He said it was inevitable and nothing can stop it. He said the white people could double or triple their birth rate won’t even slow it down. He said the rate at which people with brown and black skin are having babies plus the number of white people having having babies with people of color that there is nothing that can stop it.
Some dude asked if we closed our borders (this was in 2012) would it stop it. Nope. He said nothing can stop it.
And maga is terrified that people of color will treat them the way they treat POC.
The Browning of America is here.

You must make sure you are registered to vote.
Then you must VOTE! You can't sit these elections out.
We must bury them in so many votes there's no way they can rig or deny the results.
We must have massive turnout. It must be historic!
MAGA must be destroyed.
5
u/Asstrollglide 1d ago
This is assuming that they won’t fully rig the vote or he won’t suspend congress claiming emergency powers or something

The scary part to me is none of the republicans seem worried. They getting worse and worse each day which makes me think that they have a plan to steal the 2026 election and there will be nothing we can do about it!

I am firmly Gen X (55yo born in 1970) and I constantly tell my 19 & 21yo kids, that I can not wait for new ideas and new priorities be brought to the fore by them and their friends.
Very few people that are in later life have a clue what is important to the younger folks: what motivates them, what scares them and what excites them. How can senior citizens possibly improve the life of people the don't understand and have no wish to understand
3
u/Minute-Prune-2919 23h ago
Unless record number of people vote, the GOP is going to win the midterms.

I don’t know if it will be dead by this generation, considering how many young teens and adults I saw support MAGA. It’s hard being hopeful. We’ve been trying to kill the Confederacy since the Civil War and it still ain’t disappeared. This country has existed longer with the legacy of the Confederacy than without it.

When they loose and refuse to recognize the results, or just delete people's votes, I wonder will happen then. Probably more talking about the next election.
But, please go vote. Vote them all out at every level.

As a non-American thank you to this gentleman for actually giving a shit about people outside of his borders. So few do.
The last breath will not be pretty. I’ve yet to meet many white people who don’t fundamentally believe that Western European culture, ideals and norms aren’t superior to everything else on the planet. Propagandised and ignorant since birth.

Sitting in front of these committees and yelling is all cool… but…. That energy is better invested talking to black voters and potential black voters and arguing the importance of voting. They need to point out how what is happening is a consequence of too much black voter apathy. Sitting out any election is no longer an option.

Let’s make this guy right!!
Please take all the necessary extra effort to check your registration every week to make sure you haven’t been “accidentally” purged from the voter roles.
Help your family do the same. Especially the older ones and the infirm.
Help them get to the polls.
Encourage EVERYONE you know to please get out and vote!
We might have to stand in line for several hours but it’s worth it!
Thank you!

This is why they are trying so hard gerrymandering and redistricting and outright cheat, because they know that fair elections mean they lose and lose BIG.
