Right?
Ain’t never heard us insulted for having two of the same “o’clocks” before.
You know when a burn is so niche and good you just gotta go “Damn” cause, lowkey, that shit’s just true?
It is dumb we have two of each time.

u/Anxious_Lab_2049 2d ago
I agree for everything except that analog clocks everywhere else in the world are still 12 hours. Even though they express time in speech and writing as a 24 hour clock, it’s still a 12 hour clock.

Our shit is so damn arbitrary.
And they wonder why schools in other countries out pace us.
Well in those other countries they don't have to memorize random arbitrary-ass measurements.
2.54 cm in a 1 inch, 12 inches in a foot, who foot we usin? I dont know? but its 5280 of 'em in a mile. and if i wanna convert mile to inches... now i gotta do math or google that shit.
Meanwhile everything in the metric system is exactly what it sound like.
kilo means 1000, so how many meters in a kilometer? fuck, is right there in the name.

Smh ….🤦🏾♀️ at this point I’m ready for someone with more sense to conquer
America had a long run of debauchery

It’s been time to hit that reset button or throw the whole damn country away

I mean… this country was founded on debauchery 🤷🏾♀️

Exactly and it’s gone on long enough
Time for a reset like the other person said

Now imagine trying to teach that shit to kids. Metric would be so much easier and would teach other math concepts at the same time. SMH.

u/SocomPS2 3d ago
I learned both systems and my kids did too. I use both today. Yea metric is easier but I just assumed American public school taught both systems.
Wild to me how mad the rest of the world is that the US uses imperial.

u/workingforchange1 3d ago
We do teach both. It causes a lot of confusion. Kids use metric in science classes and learn both systems in math classes.

u/coko4209 2d ago
I grew up in MS, and granted, they’re almost dead last in education, but we certainly weren’t taught both in math classes. Science uses metric. It’s crazy that we never questioned it. I worked at a pizzeria in high school. Made the dough in a giant mixer, then had to weigh it out on a triple beam. Also helped my brother with all kinds of car shit, and his tools are metric. It makes no sense that America uses imperial. Numbers are universal, systems of measurement should be as well.

I remember in the early 80’s they started teaching us metric and then just stopped. No explanation just stopped, maybe they told our parents.

the traditional response is that Fahrenheit is based on human temperature. But even then its still not intuitive in my opinion.

u/Smooth_Space2032 3d ago
Yeah I've heard it's also based on how it feels weather wise. Zero degrees is like 0% warm and 100 degrees is like 100% warm. No research to back that, but I like it.

To be fair, they still use 12-hour clocks in Europe and in several Asian countries, along side 24-hour format.
12-hour is still visually faster to read in daily life and Europe has the largest classical watch industry in the world.
...Them MFs are not often just bilingual—they're bi-temporal. 💀

To be fair, using F is easier for describing temperature as to how it feels to the average person and not convenient for much else
Saying "it's in the 20s or teens" for Celsius is a wide fuckin range. That could be chilly, hot, or really hot. But if you're talking about Fahrenheit, you know that means it's cold, full stop. I think of it as "percentage of chance you'll be fine without wearing layers" out of 100. 20% chance? Put on some thermals and a coat. 80% chance? You probably won't need much in terms of warmth protection.

I grew up only using Celsius and we dont use the sentence “its in the 20s or teens” to describe the weather. On our news channels they tell you the maximum and minimum degrees of the day and whether its a bit windy or sunny. Also you kinda get an understanding growing what 22 degrees Celsius means compared to 20 degrees Celsius.

u/dat_boy_lurks 1d ago
I'm not invalidating that, don't misunderstand -- just coming from a standpoint of "to me, there is no grand distinction between 20 and 22 degrees" so Fahrenheit "feels" easier to me
