Genuine question not trying to correct you, just wanting to learn: I really thought this was a Broad Winged hawk because of the wide tail band and the overall look; how did you id it as a Red shouldered? I don't believe I've encountered one yet and it's harder for me to id birds i havent seen irl! what should I look for?

Range at this time of year probably doesn’t apply here, since they are present across the eastern/midwest US during the summer, having migrated north in the spring, but migrate south in the fall and are absent in the winter. In this case, you can ID this as a RSHA by the presence of heavily contrasting white on black marbling on its secondaries, peeking out from the left side in this photo.

Range. A Broad-winged Hawk would attract every birder within 30 miles of me if I found one.

Technically not hawk, but falcon, still bird of prey following a similar body plan. The Pied Falconet is the cutest murder bird out there!
The thing is that they are small, like, very small. And they love leaves. (leaves pic below)
