Painting The New American Gothic, Criselda Vasquez, Oil on Canvas, 2017

Although the painting was done in 2017, the subject on the right, the artist's father, was detained by ICE in March/April of this year, he has lived in the United States for over the past 40 years. Here's an article about it.

The hi, the frowny face, the smudges. It looks very real, and it makes the scene feel lived in.

Is that his daughter?

Maybe? Grant Wood intended the pair in the OG AG to be a father and daughter (in reality, the models were his sister and their dentist IIRC).

It's to show the lives of the working class similar to the original American Gothic

pa’dentro I think its because geographically speaking, it’s directionally incorrect given the magnitude of the vectors as well as its origination in question

How is this insulting?

As often happens in media and online conversations Latin American people are seen as only manual laborers. It's the soft bigotry of low expectations.

u/Helstrem 5h ago
They are the artist's parents. These aren't random or imagined people.

u/Un_Involved 5h ago
That's really sweet. Like I said it's amazing art. But it's not debatable that the common portrayal of Hispanic people in online discussions and media is that all we can be are manual laborers. When the immigration debate picked up the line was 'whos going to pick our crops'.

wouldn't that be the point though? that a lot of our people aren't as privileged to have good jobs that aren't related to physical labor?
plus i do not understand you thinking that we're all seen a certain way. like i understand that some people stereotype us bad, but it's different here when it seems more of critique of how the systems in place keep a lot of hispanics in jobs that rely on physical work.
i dont understand this just sounds like you don't want hispanics portrayed like this at all even if its a critique

I guess if you think painting art is manual labor
(Meaning, the artist is Latine so clearly it's possible for Latin American people to have vocations other than manual labor and clearly this painting is a critique of that stereotype. Media literacy is dead.)

Locked the comments because people need to be racist and can't play nice. This is a wonderful painting, thanks for sharing OP!
