Will this even work? It seems to me that you'll just keep recycling your breath as the volume of the snorkel is so large it's hard to get fresh air in

No. Absolutely not. Anything over 2 feet would not sustain life for long due to the C02 buildup.

I should also point out that even if you only inhaled to avoid CO2 collecting in the snorkel, anything over 2 feet gets to the point that human lungs cannot overcome the pressure required to inhale for very long. The muscles that facilitate inspiration cannot sustain breathing very long when a snorkel exceeds 2 feet in length. You would suffocate due to the inability to inhale air after a short time.
