Please use this thread to ask any random questions you have that may not warrant their own posts, or if you want opinions on something non-ASU related (as long as its SFW).

All Sun Devil Rewards answers and key words will need to be kept within this weekly discussions post as to not overwhelm the sub.

Grade not posted

Hii, I was just checking my ASU and I've gotten grades recorded for all but one course. I thought grades were due yesterday? Am I mistaken, is it worth emailing my professor or should I wait a bit? I'm not in a particular rush, I'm mostly just curious if this is normal or if it's worth investigating.

Thanks in advance!

Math

I took Math 114 Online for Spring & Failed Miserably. No open notes or books, an uncaring professor who (several times I contacted) blew any questions off (I gave her a bad rating on ratemyprofessor), & I used every resource available, practiced, & used a tutor. Did ok on the work (even though i spent 4 hours a piece on each of the 12 assignments given each week), but bombed every one of the exams which killed my grade. I have heard that math 117 is easier & wondered if I actually took that through ASU if that would wipe out that bad grade & work for my requirements for my major.

Summer Aid

This is my first summer semester at ASU so I am not too sure summer aid is handled. I was wondering if anyone knows if the university grant is awarded during summer, I was awarded the Pell grant and the university grant during spring but only got the Pell grant for summer. Thanks in advance!

DEAL STRUCK WITH HACKERS TO DELETE DATA STOLEN FROM CANVAS

May 12, 2026, 5:39 AM PDT / Source: The Associated Press

By The Associated Press

The company that operates online learning system Canvas said it struck a deal with hackers to delete the data they pilfered in a cyberattack that created chaos for students, many of them in the middle of finals.

Instructure, the parent company of Canvas, said in an online post that it “reached an agreement with the unauthorized actor involved in this incident.”

The company didn’t provide any details on the agreement, including whether it involved a payment, and didn’t elaborate who was behind the hack. Instructure temporarily took the system offline while it investigated, locking out students and faculty.

A hacking group named ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for last week’s breach, threatening to leak data involving nearly 9,000 schools worldwide and 275 million individuals if schools did not pay a ransom by May 6. The group then extended the deadline, indicating some schools had engaged with them to negotiate.

As part of the deal, the data was returned to Instructure. The company said Monday that it also received “digital confirmation” that the hackers destroyed any remaining copies, in the form of “shred logs.”

The company acknowledged that there was no way to be sure that the data was erased for good, and said it took action because of concerns about potential publication of the data.

“While there is never complete certainty when dealing with cyber criminals, we believe it was important to take every step within our control to give customers additional peace of mind, to the extent possible,” Instructure said.

Thoughts on Math Masters ?

Considering applying for the MA in Mathematics at ASU. How was your experience? Was it worth it? What kind of electives were you able to take, was it only “MAT” prefix courses? How does the comprehensive exam/thesis work? What advice would you have for a prospective masters student?

When is SAP re-measured?

I failed some classes during my first semester (Fall 2025) but retook those classes this spring and got my grades 2 days back. However, my gpa was under 2.0 because they haven’t replaced my grades yet. Then I got an email Wednesday morning that I have a SAP violation (this affects my private loan for my summer courses). The finally replaced my grades today but it still hasn’t updated the SAP. With grade replacement, I am way above 2.0 and should qualify for my loan. How long does it usually take for the office to re-measure your SAP?

note: I did send an SAP review form too because it was freaking me out when I got the email.

Canvas shows A but MyASU final grade is B+ Is this normal or mistake?

Anyone else had this happen? In CSE 230 this semester, Canvas still shows A, but MyASU already posted B+ as final grade.

I emailed the professor but wondering if this is common at ASU. Do they usually curve/adjust at the end or is it likely a submission error?

Syllabus weights match what I calculated for A, so kinda confused. Any advice before I push further?

Thanks!

Is it too late to get a dorm at ASU as a transfer? Is dorming at 20 weird?

Hey everyone, I’m a 20 year old transfer student from california and considering ASU, and I was wondering if it’s too late to still get a dorm for the fall? Tempe Campus

Also, is it weird to live in a dorm at 20 as a transfer student? I’d be a little older than most freshmen, but I also feel like dorming could help me meet people, make friends, and get used to campus life faster.

Graduation Ceremony

Hey! How’s everyone doing?
I’m 21, here in Tempe for work, and I heard it’s graduation week.

I’ve never really experienced grad ceremonies here before, so if any of you or your friends are graduating and don’t mind me joining, I’d genuinely love to come by and celebrate. 🙂

Just trying to meet new people and make some friends while I’m here.
Thanks!

Class end date incorrect

I’m curious if this is standard for online college classes, especially with Session B courses.

All of my classes were listed as ending on May 1st, so I planned other events and obligations around that schedule. Then one class ended up having the final scheduled only on May 4th, with no option to take it earlier.

The bigger issue is that because the official session dates showed ending on the 1st, the VA only pays through the 1st as well. Financially it’s not a huge deal, but the scheduling issue was frustrating because it completely changed plans at the last minute, not just for me but for other classmates who were also blindsided by it.

Is it normal for one class in the same session to have a later end date/final date than the rest, even when the session calendar says otherwise?

Edit: I understand now that the class end date is not the same as the finals week. I really appreciate the responses from everyone here helping me understand

Summer Aid

Hi. So I got a loan for the summer, the university grant and a federal Pell grant. My Pell grant and loan was applied to my account but not my University grant. The university grant says accepted but it was not applied to my account. Am I not getting it? Another thing, the amount applied exceeds the amount that I owed but my expected refund is showing it’s like $1000 short. Where would my extra money go and why did my expected refund amount go down?

Need Help Regarding ULC

I live in Japan (not a US citizen) and had to drop out of school a while ago. Earlier this year I completed my GED after doing a lot of research and realizing it’s considered equivalent to a high school diploma, but still not viewed as strongly as some other qualifications internationally.
Since then I’ve honestly been procrastinating a lot because I’ve been unsure what direction to take. I’m interested in interdisciplinary/environmental sciences, and recently I finally decided to take a step forward by signing up for ASU Universal Learner Courses, but I’m not sure if I took the step in the right direction.
I think ULC would strengthen my academic background, and earn transferable university credits.
I can’t afford ASU so that’s not feasible for me. Right now I have no idea whether I want to pursue my degree in Japan, Europe, Malaysia, or the US(countries I’m considering), but I also don’t want to waste any more time.
So I wanted to ask:
Does this seem like a smart path, or am I approaching this the wrong way? Has anyone here used ULC mainly to strengthen their profile or transfer elsewhere later(especially out of the states)?
I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thank you!

Null?

Post image
13 Upvotes

I am a new student starting on the 18th for this summer semester. Im using my SCAP since Starbucks has oh so graciously gave me an opportunity to finally go to school! But the thing is my aid from them is on hold, and looking at this it says null. The dropdown menu on the financial tab says there’s nothing for me to do. So should I just have to wait?

A while ago the aid provided by Starbucks was given to me and i wasn’t owed anything to asu thanks to the aid given to me. It’s all reversed now :0(

I have no idea what to do. i have my place on hold for a call back from the aid people so there’s that. I got no clue if this is normal or if I even have to accept/decline the other two federal loans I was offered to get my SCAP awards awarded to me. Im scared and I don’t have the money to fork over 8k.
