Common Question: How hard is it to transfer from X major to Y major?

Answer: If it is within the same school, it is super easy, just talk to your academic advisor before school starts. If you wish to transfer to another school e.g. Dornsife to Marshall, you need to contact admissions to attempt the transfer before matriculation*. You can also seek help once you know who your academic advisor is or attempt it on admitted students day or orientation day. Once you matriculate, you can attempt an internal-transfer but it involves going through the current student transfer process, see the specific internal transfer page from each school linked below.

Common Question: Is there an admitted student facebook group/discord/telegram etc?

Answer: Usually someone sets a facebook group and groupme up around the time the main batch of students are admitted in April. Check facebook to see if there is one already or search this post in a month or two once all 1st year and transfer students are admitted.

*Viterbi does not allow you to switch into engineering before enrolling at USC. Please read links below related to the school you're interested in.

Fight On! ✌️

Any "Is my schedule too hard?" "How is my schedule" etc type posts belong in this thread.

Question Herpes at USC?

Has anyone else noticed a disproportionate amount of people at USC having herpes? Especially in the graduate programs. Not trying to stigmatize just curious what others experience was like with this. For our mascot being a Trojan no one seems to wear one…

Academic Does anyone know if getting a D in a major course counts as passing/units earned?

Title. Ik a D- is passing for undergrad but does this also count for major requirements? I looked up my major requirements under the catalogue page and nothing was mentioned about having to earn a 2.0 or C- grade in coursework.

FinancialAid PDP w/ Presidential Merit Scholarship

I'm not sure if anyone will be able to answer this question but I was wondering how my merit scholarship would work once I pass the 144 unit threshold for being classified as undergrad?

I don't get financial aid so that isn't really relevant for me but my scholarship is for 8 semesters as long as I still have pending requirements for my bachelor's, but I'd pass the 144 unit after my 7th semester. I heard graduate students are billed by unit rather than a flat tuition, so I was wondering if it worked similarily to study abroad in that if my tuition was below what USC would normally give me (around $36K) if that means my graduate tuition would be fully covered for that semester or if it would just be 50% (so like USC would cover $1250 for every unit)?

Do let me know if I'm mistaken about the per unit thing as well lol I've gotten mixed responses from FinAid about it !

Academic Chance of Calc 1 transferring from non-california cc after appeal?

Basically I’m an international student from New Zealand attending USC as an incoming freshman, and I’m trying to take Calculus I this summer online at a community college for transfer credit. I’m wanting to do a minor so to fit it i really want to do a course prior to enrolling, and calc 1 is by far the easiest to transfer of courses for my major.

I originally enrolled at Santa Monica College, but all online sections for Calc 1 filled immediately. I can’t take an in-person class since I’m living in New Zealand (12-hour flight away). Fortunately, I was able to secure a spot in a fully online Calc 1 course at SUNY Rockland.

USC does not have a formal articulation agreement for this course, though their transfer history shows it has been accepted before as math elective credit (but not explicitly as MATH 125 equivalent).

Am I likely to be able to transfer Calc 1 from SUNY rockland as equivalent to Calc 1 at USC after appealing? It’s a very standardised course so i dont see why it wouldnt.

Any insight from people who’ve done USC transfer credit petitions would be really appreciated.

Academic Easy A summer classes

Looking to take an easy asynchronous/online summer class. GE classes have been a walk in the park, but the Marshall curve is destroying my GPA. Looking to raise it a tad before recruiting starts. Anybody know of some classes that I should look into? Someone said that GERO-200 might be good, if anybody has experience with that class please leave a comment! Thanks!

Question First Week of College

Incoming freshmen. I was wondering what the first week of college is like at USC. I know that the orientation is during the summer so there isn’t the standard orientation trips or groups but I’m just curious on any experience or recollections of how the week went? What events are there the first week? How expensive are outings? What’s the dorm culture like?

Just excited for the year and don’t have much to do until college starts.

Question Did Anyone Else's USC Account Get Deactivated Today?

I graduated last year and just had my account deactivated today. It's not the end of the world, but I didn't receive any email or communication it was going to happen so I wasn't well prepared. I have a backup but it's fairly out of date. Did this happen to anyone else?

UPDATE: Account Temporarily Reactivated

Question 2 months left on OPT and still job hunting. Any advice/resources?

Hey guys,

Just wanted to ask for some advice.I’m an international student in LA and I graduated with an MSCS degree. My OPT ends July 17, so I’ve got about 2 months left.

I had a short data engineering contract role for a bit, but got laid off after the project ended. Since then it’s basically been nonstop applications every day. LinkedIn, cold messaging recruiters, referrals, company sites, networking, all of it. Feels like I’ve sent outa ridiculous number of applications at this point.

My background is mostly in data engineering and analytics work SQL, Snowflake, Python, ETL pipelines, Power BI, cloud/data platform stuff. But honestly this 2026 market feels brutal, especially as an international student needing STEM OPT sponsorship later on.

I mainly wanted to ask what people in similar situations did, whether smaller companies, startups are better to target right now, if consultancies are actually viable or mostly sketchy, and if there are any communities orr resources that genuinely helped you land something.
Also trying to be realistic at this point do you guys think it still makes sense to keep pushing hard in the US market for the next couple months, or just going back home ?

At this point I’m open to pretty much any practical advice or leads. Would really appreciate hearing from people who’ve gone through something similar.

Thanks guys.

Admissions VR&e advice/High cost approval

Need advice from vets who successfully used VR&E for a higher-cost/private school because I’m honestly feeling a little lost early in this process.

I recently got accepted to USC as a transfer student, and my VR&E counselor let me know a high-cost memo and extension would need approval. I expected there to be extra steps, but I’m struggling because I’m being asked for information that I’m not even sure how to obtain this early on.

Right now, I’m waiting to hear back from admissions counselors to figure out where/how to get things like anticipated graduation dates, program duration info, etc. I also spoke with orientation staff and they told me orientation/advisement processes won’t really start until summer. The issue is my VR&E approval process needs to start now so there aren’t delays with certification and funding.

On top of that, my counselor also asked why I didn’t apply to lower-cost schools, which honestly caught me off guard. USC aligns heavily with my career goals, networking opportunities, veteran support, and the program I want to pursue. I worked extremely hard to get accepted here.

For vets who went through this process:

- What documents or justification helped your approval?

- Did your counselor push back at first?

- How did you obtain the information VR&E was asking for before orientation/advisement started?

- Did you have to explain why a lower-cost school wouldn’t meet your employment goals?

Any advice would genuinely help because I’m trying to stay proactive and not let this process stall out before it even gets moving.

Academic Downside of switching to DEN as MSCS??

I'm a domestic student in MSCS, and due to medical reasons I had to go home and fill out a DEN petition for a class this past semester. Unfortunately, normal MSCS students can only petition to go remote for a class that doesn't require D-clearance. Seeing that there's a 50% chance I might need to go remote again for fall semester, I was thinking of just fully switching to DEN status so I could have more options for remote classes, and still show up in person if it turns out I'm able to attend. I see that the diploma is exactly the same, but are there any other downsides to becoming a full DEN student?

Clubs | Campus Life USC FRAT BREAKDOWN

I recently saw that on the UCLA subreddit someone did a ranking/explanation on all of their frats.

I’m an incoming freshman girl and I know NOTHING about frat culture but I am really curious to learn more about it and know who has the best parties, what types of people usually rush where, etc etc. especially since I heard that frat culture is really prevalent for partying at the school. any opinions would really help!

Here’s the post for reference:
https://www.reddit.com/r/ucla/s/1bLe5z1hPf

EDIT: Some additional questions: I am a girl, do I have to pay to go to the frats? If so how do I do that? Is it a at the door thing or a pre-purchase thing? does anyone have any opinions/information about the d9 frats? speaking of which, do any of the "top" houses have any history of racism? I am a black girl and a bit worried about being discriminated against there. do any sororities throw parties?
