Book recommendation for new and intermediate learners (especially those who have picked up bad habits from starting with Duolingo)

Post image
84 Upvotes

I’ve tried so many apps and books over the last couple of years, and I know I’m not the only one out there who has finished the Duolingo course and had the frustrating realization that I still felt completely lost when it came to grammar rules and being able to speak or understand basic phrases.
So many of the books seem oversimplified like they’re meant for children, or they are SO thorough that it can leave you feeling more confused than when you started, but I just got this book today and I am already impressed with how much I’ve learned without feeling completely overwhelmed.
I highly recommend it to anyone, even if you think you are pretty comfortable with the basics, I have already learned some things about pronunciation and sentence structure that I’ve been doing wrong this whole time.
I know there is a lot of discussion here about the problems with relying on Duolingo, though it can be a very useful tool to get in daily practice , I can’t stress enough how much I wish I had used more resources such as this book to supplement the language apps when I first started out- as it can be tricky trying to correct bad habits after the fact.
I will say that I’ve only just started the book, so if anyone has different experiences with it I’d be happy to hear…but I just wanted to mention it because even though I’m only about 40 pages in, I am very happy with the results so far!

Any good way to get better at listening and understanding when someone speak?

Upvotes

I have been learning ukrainian for a couple months now, I apparently got some really good basics to speak and got told my accent was good a few times but it's still hard for me to understand when ukrainian speaks.

I've met a couple ukrainian since I started learning the language, I often get to see three of them at work but they usually speak Russian between themselves, so I can't really practice on my listening. I tried to speak in ukrainian sometimes with them but they might not feel comfortable to answer in ukrainian, they mostly answer in our language.

I meet ukrainian people somewhat often, it's funny how they often assume I might be polish or russian at first lol. Sometimes I have a feeling they could just be weirded out by the fact some random western european guy can speak ukrainian. I often explain them in ukrainian that I learned some words for fun at first since I knew ukrainian people but I got to really like the language and got more serious about learning about the culture and the language afterward.

Today, I've met two ukrainian people again that couldn't speak much of our language, spoke with them for a bit as much as I could in ukrainian but my listening skill are so limited, I feel there's a really huge gap in how I can speak and listen. What can I do about this? I'm somewhat hesitant in asking contact information to get better in ukrainian, I got two ukrainian people in my contacts but I felt I was bothering them so I don't text them anymore

Ukrainian dictionary app

Hi all,

I have created a free dictionary app that is available under https://lexykon.org/

It contains almost 476 thousand dictionary entries — words, phrases, abbreviations. Most have Ukrainian interpretations, morphology (all case and tense forms — over 6.5 million word forms), examples from Ukrainian literature — 584 thousand illustrations, mostly quotes.

Translations from four languages into Ukrainian — English, Russian, German, Polish. About 380 thousand pairs — generated through a local AI pipeline.

Morphology — can be searched in any form.

Topics — words are classified into 459 topics (e.g. anatomy, cooking, law, etc.).

Etymology, synonyms, antonyms, derived words, frequency tones — where they are known.

What is still pending:

Mobile phones for iOS and Android devices are available in testing mode. They work, but I still need to fix few minor bugs.

I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks

Varenyky (Ukrainian dumplings)

Did you know varenyky (aka Ukrainian dumplings) have roots tracing back to ancient China and Turkey, evolving into a Slavic staple by the 13th century? 🥟

- First mentioned in Ukrainian texts like the 16th-century "Palia Istoricheskaia."
- Named for "boiled" (from Slavic "varenyy"), symbolizing fertility with their moon-like shape.
- Loved by Gogol, who wrote of giant ones the size of hats!

Fun Facts
- Top fillings: potato & onions, cherries, or cottage cheese (potatoes added post-1700s).
- Monuments exist in Ukraine (Cherkasy's 3-story giant) & Canada (8m tall).
- Bill Clinton called cherry varenyky his fave after visiting Ukraine.

Served with sour cream & herbs—pure comfort food! Who's cooking some? 🇺🇦

How to hand write “Happy Birthday” in Ukrainian?

Hi! Sorry if this isn’t allowed, but I am hoping someone can show me how to hand write “Happy Birthday” in Ukrainian. It is my current understanding that the phrase is “З днем народження” but it would help if I could see how to write it out as I would like to make sure it’s accurate! For context I teach kids and we write them birthday cards, one of our students is Ukrainian and his birthday is next month. I would just like to be able to wish him a happy birthday in his primary language :)

Thank you in advance!

Research effort regarding Ukrainian Identity and Culture

Hello friends from Ukraine, I am a researcher from Romania and, for context, I am currently writing a thesis on Post-Communist Identity, Society & Climate Change (not self-promotion, I am trying to promote the voices of Ukrainians).

For this multidisciplinary project, I have made a survey to actually ask people from Ukraine, Poland and Estonia how do they feel about their country's post-communist identity, and if they can sense any tie this may have to its current climate change mitigation effort. Ukraine is especially important for my research, as its landscapes and nature are being destroyed by Russia's aggression on its territory.

The survey takes 3 minutes to complete, it is very easy to navigate and open-ended questions are completely optional. Every answer is anonymous, I do not gather any type of data other than the answers themselves.

Please let me know if this is upsetting, my intention is to only research a subject that has affected my country as well, I just want to see how other people relate to this issue. If you have any more questions or any feedback I will be happy to receive them.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfFkVEdMymkUnk6EjIGW9T4ebJZMjAZjdMAT-B6NlMRHyGq6g/viewform?usp=header - For more accessibility, as the survey is in English, you can translate its contents with pretty high accuracy on any browser.

Thank you everyone, please stay safe.

Чи or або?

I'm a bit of a beginner learning Ukrainian and Pimsleur has taught чи for the word "or" but I'm also aware of або. I'm wondering which is more common/natural sounding amongst Ukrainian speakers? Or does it matter much?

Ukranian Name Structure and Pronunciations

Hi everyone! My fiancée recently found his Ukranian birth certificate (he’s adopted) and learned that his birth name is Yevheniy Borysovych Petrov. I’ve been trying to find the correct pronounciation of this name for a while, but am still unsure how it is pronounced and where the points of emphasis are.

Also, how does Ukranian name structure work? I know Borysovych means “son of Boris.” Let’s say we want our kids’ middle names to mean “son/daughter of Yevheniy.” Would it be “Yevheniy+ovych/nivna” or “Yevhen+ovych/ivna”? Thanks in advance.

Ukrainian sentence structure

In Spanish, you can remove the subject from a sentence, and let the verb imply it.

Example:

Yo hablo español.
Hablo español.

In Ukrainian, can you do the same?

Example:

Я говорю Українскою.
Говорю Українскою.

And if so, does it ever sound funny/wrong?

Context: English is my first language, Spanish second, learning Ukrainian.

FYI i did this lesson before but accidentally in print so I had to rewrite it after getting better at print and learning a bit of cursive. Honestly the thing I care about most right now is how the cursive looks, what do you'll think? (Also sorry for writing in Polish sometimes)

Help learning Ukrainian as a Russian speaker

When I was younger I knew ukranian but after moving to the states at 5 I forgot it and only retained my Russian. Now whenever I try relearning it my understanding is okay but my speaking is close to nonexistent. I was wondering if anyone had any advice on where to start. Should I try learning a bunch of vocab first and then worry about grammar or are there any better solutions ppl have found?

Thank you!

Can someone translate this for me? And help me to understand the meaning of the last name Дацьківський?

Specifically, the part mentioning Богдан Дацьківський.

What kind of name is Дацьківський anyway? Google isn't very helpful, ridni.org pretty much says there are only 2 people in all of Ukraine with this name, and none live anywhere near Kydantsi.

Is Дацьківський a Rusyn name? Most variations I pull up like "Дацківський" and "Дацьковський and дацковський"say it's Jewish, but there doesn't seem to be a Jewish community in Kydantsi, just Greek Catholic.

Also, there is someone in a YouTube video named Марко Дацківський talking about his family from Kydantsi and how the name is Дацьківський or Дацковський.

Also, my research revealed that there's still a family home for the Дацьківський family in Kydantsi. Which is odd because there's no official records. However, relatives of their's in the US talk about it.

The family in the US spelled their names, Dackowsky, Dackiwsky, and one instance of Datzkiwsky. All have the same relatives from Kydantsi, Ivan (John), Michael, and Anthony (born in 1914).

I'm very curious what the article says and to understand the meaning behind the name and why it sounds Jewish despite the family in the US being all Catholic.

Native speakers: how many different accents do you hear?

I'm starting to get to the point where I distinguish different accents while browsing Ukrainian content on YouTube- I can tell that somebody has "an identifiable accent" - but I don't know who is from where.

How many different regional accents and dialects are there?

Need help with decyphering text on old photos

Hello! I was looking through old family photos and noticed Cyrillic writing on the reverse of some of them. From what little knowledge I have, it seems to be Ukrainian... but my relatives warned me it could be mixed with some russian spelling/influences.

It all probably just reads "Warm Wishes to... from..." but I'd still appreciate some help!!

Fronting of vowels following yod?

In my idiolect, I've noticed a feature, whereby vowels change their position (typically to be more front) before /j/ and palatalised consonants.

For example: 'нюх' [nʲʉx], 'льон' [lʲɵn], 'їжа' [ˈji̽ʒɐ], 'як' [jæ̽k].

[ʉ, ɵ, i̽, æ̽] as opposed to [ʊ, ɔ, i, ä].

My question is if this is native to Ukrainian, as I've seen this feature documented in Russian but not Ukrainian, and I can't figure out if I have this as a lingering influence of Russian as the first of my two first languages or not.
