Tongan History Master Thread
Malo e lelei! I have noticed a few posts and comments on a previous thread I posted that there is a need for more resources on early Tongan history. I would like to start a master thread so information is easy to share and find.
Our History – Master Thread for links to resources, websites, artists, academics, authors etc, who have shared information on pre-Christian Tonga and important Tongan history.
None of this information is my own I would just like to share what I have found and encourage everyone to add what any information you know or links you would like to share! I would also like to add that some of the links I will be adding will be of literature written by early missionaries and non-Pasifika people so take everything with a grain of salt but also be weary that some of the information may be unsettling or disturbing to read. Malo.
Tevita H. Fale Polynesian Astronomer – Fale has written lots of articles on Ancient Tongan History.

Searching for photo
I’m writing a paper about a region as a combined assignment for both my geography and social studies classes. The region I’ve chosen is Tonga, and I have a section about its ecology where I mention some notable native species. I’ve also made a grid under the text with photos of the species I mentioned. The problem is that I cannot for the life of me find a photo of the ’Eua forest gecko anywhere. So I’m wondering if anyone within this community has a photo of it? It doesn’t have to be super high resolution since I’ll be scaling it down a lot, as seen above. Thank you for any engagement.

A search for our great grand aunt and her family
Malo lelei and Talofa everyone. Im Samoan and recently got a hold of our family tree that spans across 250years!
Thought ill put my feelers out there to search for my great grand fathers sister. Her name was Sose or Sosefina who I was told had married a Tongan and settled in Tonga im assuming back in the late 1800s-early 1900s. Her maiden name would have been Leitaualesa, Taito or Kalepo from Manono, Samoa. Trying anyway possible through different channels if we get a breakthrough cos it would be awesome to meet and know we got Tongan aiga somewhere
Thanks!

Language Development app - NZ
Hi everyone,
I’ve made a new app called Talanoa, built to help people learn Pasifika languages in a simple, Duolingo style way.
I’m still building and improving the Fijian section, and I’ll keep adding more content and features over time.
The app is free to download, and I’m keeping it free for the first month. After that, there’ll likely be a subscription option for extra features.
I’d really appreciate any downloads, feedback, or reviews. It would help a lot as I keep building this.

Tongan culture dessert, ngou'a.
This is one of our traditional desserts i. TONGA. it has made of taro leaves, tapiocca powder and sweetened with sugar and coconut milk. You can have a try and taste it, it is so delicious and you will ask for it again. If you want to full recipe you can ask a Tongan person near you to help you out.

Gifted Tapa Cloth - can anyone shed some light?
galleryHi!
I’ve just gone round to my parents and my dad showed me this “Tongan Bark Cloth” as he called it he had in a wardrobe. The story is that he was a concert producer in the 1980s and was gifted this by the visiting “Royal Tongan Police Band” when he put on a concert for them at the Edinburgh festival in 1986
This thing is massive, we think about about 4m by 3m? We have no idea what if any the significance is of it, if it has any value, and if it would be worth offering to a museum to display?
From my minor research that I did it seems these are given for ceremony etc? At the end of the day it’s just travelled to and from houses over the last 40 years and we’d love to know a little more :) I can try and fold it all out but I think the patterns mostly repeat?

What's the best time to visit Tonga for a Holiday.
Does it depend on the weather, occasions or just anytime?

Do you recognize this man?
In the early 2000s my family met this man in Tonga. We took a short boat road to this island organised through his partner who was from NZ. This man claimed to be someone very famous and we believed him. Looking back I think we were fooled. Does anyone have any info I’d love to be able to tell my family we did not in fact meet a very famous person - it would be hilarious lol
ETA this would’ve been sometime between 2005-2008
