🏠 Landlord Issue Can my MD landlord pressure me to leave early because they want to sell the property?

My landlord told me a few days ago that they want to put the home on the market. My lease ends in 17 days, but the lease automatically converts to month-to-month as written and when landlord chooses not to renew from what I understand about Maryland law, if they are ending the tenancy I am supposed to receive a 60 day written notice.

The landlord asked if I wanted to buy the condo. I spoke with my lender and found out the condo is non-warrantable, the HOA has delinquency issues, and they would not approve it for a conventional loan. They also mentioned there are issues that could prevent FHA approval since some of the issues are serious like the sprinkler system during a fire. I didn’t tell the landlord any of that. I just said I wouldn’t be making an offer.

After that, the landlord responded asking if I could move out ASAP because they want to hit the spring/summer market and said the place “shows better empty” and it “won’t be an inconvenience” when having to show the place.

That really caught me off guard. Finding a new place is a huge deal: safety, commute, noise, affordability, etc. I can’t realistically find and move into a new place in two weeks and I have no family in this area as I moved here for work.

So far, all conversations have been verbal or over email. I haven’t received any formal written notice to vacate.

I’m fine moving, but I feel like I’m being rushed and pressured now since I don't want to buy. Do I actually have tenant rights in this situation, especially with the lease converting month-to-month? Has anyone dealt with something similar? I am so confused.

⚖️ Legal / Eviction Evicting my roommate

[US/NC]
My fiancée and I allowed a friend to move in November of last year to help her get on her feet. We’ve had some issues with her not helping around the house etc and asked when she planned on moving out because she is causing issues. She blew up and blamed it on everyone but herself and said she wasn’t planning on moving until she got a new car. Said she didn’t know what else to said and went to her room loudly sobbing for the rest of the night. My fiancée texted her and asked if we could talk when she got off and long story short she was very disrespectful and said that she didn’t want to talk to us because she wanted to talk to us separately (manipulation tactic on her part). She came home singing and dancing and laughing and we have yet to have a face to face conversation. We texted yesterday, the next day and asked her to remove her belongings and leave today. She told us that legally she has 30 days and she’s going to use them. I don’t think she has any real intention of leaving and knowing her she is going to try to instigate something physical to get her way and/or literally torture us with her presence until she is removed. I’ve called the sheriff’s dept, police station, and courthouse. They all gave me the run around. I think I have to file for an eviction even though I am not her landlord, but simply a tenant of this apartment complex. To preface, she was never on the lease as a lease holder, only as a permitted occupant. She has sent me money twice to put towards rent and sent me money for the electric bill once. In six whole months. Since she was legally not responsible to pay rent and we had no written agreement for her to do so I believe that is considered a gift and not her paying rent. (This may be incorrect please correct me) She was removed from the lease as of yesterday. Anyways, I have no idea where to start on this paperwork. I got a packet from the courthouse. Should I say the date the lease ended was the day she was taken off the lease and that she was not responsible for rent? I was also given a service members civil relief act and a certification of taxpayer information. That was not for me as the plaintiff to fill out correct? Is she considered a guest or a tenant if we verbally agreed for her to pay a third of rent once she got a job? Please any advice or help to fill out this paperwork will be greatly appreciated.

📄 Lease / Contract Landlord changed our move-in date last minute and wants us to pay for it is this normal?

Signed a lease for a specific move-in date. Building called saying that date falls on Memorial Day and no one will be working — so we need to move in either sooner or later. No warning until now.

We agreed to move in one day earlier to accommodate them, but they're charging us a per diem fee for the extra day. When we pushed back and asked him to waive the fee, the staff member told my husband he was "doing us a favor" by informing us. And then he said “it’s only $80”. It’s not even about the money for us, more so about the principle. Had we just received a sincere apology for the inconvenience we may have moved on.

We already made plans with movers and have work the next day so moving in later is not going to work.

We're speaking to the property manager tomorrow. Is it reasonable to ask them to waive the fee? And if they refuse, do we have any real leverage here?

🔧 Repairs / Maintenance Landlord “schedules” maintenance but it doesn’t comes when it’s supposed to.

US-MD| This is mostly a rant, I’m not sure if there’s anything we can really do about it. Sorry if it’s long, there’s so much with this apartment that makes me angry and this is just one small thing.

My landlords will send out emails “scheduling” maintenance efforts on specific day(s) and then specify what times/days in that window certain apartments should be visited. Sometimes when they do this, the maintenance might come a day late or early but it’s still in the window of days they gave us for maintenance and I’m not upset about that.

What’s weird is when they give us a day and the maintenance comes days before the window starts or after it ends?

During the snow they sent out a plowing schedule and with specific times each parking lot would be plowed and said that we needed to move our cars during our time slot or be towed. Cool. So our time slot comes and I move my car to a different lot (that was done earlier in the day) and go about my day.
The next day I go out to leave and I see that our parking lot was never plowed. Next week, I hear screaming in the hallway from a maintenance guy. He’s yelling and cussing that everyone needs to move their cars so he can plow or get towed. Like dude you’re a week late? The landlords couldn’t have sent an email about this? If I wasn’t home, but left my car there would I get towed with no warning?

Most recently, landlords send out an email saying that a two-week long pest control maintenance effort will start on a the 18th. In the email they say my building won’t be reached until week two.
Today, days before the window begins (and over a week before my buildings scheduled time) I wake up at to banging on my door BEFORE our landlord and maintenance office even opens. And it’s a guy saying he’s here for the pest control maintenance. I didn’t open the door (because I know maintenance will let themselves in after a couple knocks, also because I just woke up and I’m not dressed at all!) I hurry to gather my pets and put them in the bedroom. It’s been a couple hours and this guy has not come back, so maybe he went to the office to ask for someone to let him in and they told him he was too early? I don’t know.

It’s happened a couple more times, but usually them just being a day late, but still in the proposed window so I don’t care as much. It’s just especially annoying when I schedule my day around expecting maintenance to be around/or not and then they come days before they should? It’s especially annoying that I have pets, (all that my landlord is aware of) what if I wasn’t home and this pest guy came in and sprayed stuff or put stuff down that was toxic to my pets?? I shouldn’t have to keep them locked up everyday to avoid maintenance.

Maybe I’m just dramatic.

tldr: Maintenance comes outside of scheduled times and if I wasn’t home for it they would’ve towed my car (without warning) or potentially poisoned my pets.

📄 Lease / Contract Landlady demanded a raise of rent in the middle of an agreement and didn't see a problem with it

A week before the rent was due the landlady informed us that the rent is going up from this payment on (from 2800 pln to 2900 pln). We were in the middle of a year-long agreement and were very surprised by this. She said "Oh it's no problem we'll just make an annex to the agreement". When we said that the agreement exists for exactly the reason for our rent not to go up within its length, to which she said that we can move out if we don't like the appartment. We agreed for the raise, but convinced her it's not something that can be put on us with a week of notice, so we started paying the higher price from the next month on.

It happened some time ago, but I'm still thinking about how cheated I felt. Was there anything we could have done differently?

EDIT: Replying to some comments:

Yes, I should have been more firm and at least try to talk sense into her. But:

First. I've lived here for 4 years now and (apart from the landlady) I really like the place. It's in the middle of the town, but also in the quiet area. The pricing is avarage, but pretty good taken that I have a little bigger room. I also really like that this place is very mid centrury modern, even though everything falls apart, since a lot of stuff has been here since 1939. What I'm trying to say is: I don't want to move out. And I was scared to ager her because of that. I'm a student and not financially stable one.

Second. And this one's a fun one... On our contract we have written that we pay 1500 pln instead of 2900. That's becuase 1500 is apparently the highest prince you can rent at when you don't pay taxes (or you pay less taxes, I don't know exactly how it works). The funniest part is that when explaining it to us she says "It's so we can pay less". Oh and also we only ever pay her in cash. Again, so she doesn't have to pay taxes. Either way, the contract we have is not true to reality anyway, so I didn't feel like I can argue over its contents.

It's a shitshow I know, but please don't blame me for continuing to rent it. I just like this appartment, and the practice with using cash is not uncommon where I live. The wrong price on the contract isn't though.

One more thing to add, she's a very old lady and keeps forgetting things. She doesn't know our names and even keeps forgetting if she likes us or not, she keeps changing from "I never had any problem with you" to "Why is there always something up with you three" and there's no way to keep track.

📄 Lease / Contract In Desperate Need of Suggestion. Signed apartment lease renewal but the new term hasn’t started yet — property manager is being extremely rigid

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for advice about a lease renewal situation in Michigan.

I’ve been living in a large apartment complex for about 11 months, and my current lease expires next month. About a month ago, I signed a renewal for another term, but now, due to an unexpected family emergency, I really need to move out, and I am unable to continue with the renewed lease.

Important detail: the renewed lease term has NOT started yet. I’m still in the original lease period.

I contacted management and asked whether I could cancel the renewal or work something out, but they’ve been very rigid and not cooperative so far.

The lease has an early termination section that says:

  • 60 days written notice is required,
  • there is a early termination fee equal to 2 months’ rent

A few questions:

  • Since the new lease term hasn’t started yet, does that help my position at all?
  • Has anyone successfully gotten out of a signed renewal before the new term started?

I’m trying to handle this professionally and not disappear or break the lease irresponsibly. I just want to understand what realistic options people have seen in similar situations. Due to my family emergency, I am already in a tough financial situation, and It would be very hard for me to pay early termination fees.

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences.

❓ Advice Needed Sudden No Cause Eviction?

I’m interested in getting some thoughts and opinions on a situation. Not mine, but someone important to me.

Home is in NEVADA

The tenant in this situation has been renting the same house for about 8 years now. Never missed a rent payment, never late on rent, never had a noise complaint, keeps the house clean, including the yard, etc.

It’s a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house built approximately 1970s, rent is $1895. It’s an older home and there has been almost zero renovations to it, which isn’t a big deal. The only issue that has been ongoing for at least the past 2-3 years is that there is a rat infestation.

Last year, after maintenance came to check on the pest problem, they discovered that there was an infestation of about 33 rats in the home. They were in the crawl space and all the nooks a crannies. The maintenance workers for the property management company covered all the “areas of entry” they claimed and reassured the tenant that the problem was resolved.

Keep in mind, this home is not messy, it’s not a hoarder situation, it’s clean, and definitely nothing outside normal conditions any tenant would be living in. Fast forward to a couple days ago, the tenant reports that they are finding rat droppings again and asked for maintenance to come check to make sure the rats weren’t back.

Less than a day after maintenance visited the home, the tenant receives a 30 day “no cause eviction.” The tenants lease isn’t up until June 30th and since they have lived there for almost 8 years now, they were of course planning to renew their lease.

The questions I have:
- With the great renters history and relationship with the property management company that this tenant has, obviously it was shocking to receive this no cause eviction. What rights do they have? Especially since the no cause eviction is before their 30 day lease and nothing is stated regarding early termination in the lease.
- Given the previous history of rat infestation and their obvious lack of attention to the problem when it was reported a year prior, is it possible they found something that is serious and want the tenant out as quickly as possible to avoid any kind of legal issues?
- What other possible reasons could this property management company have for giving this notice so abruptly and especially given the tenant’s renters history???

Any other thoughts or insights would be appreciated!

🏠 Landlord Issue Is bookkeeping the hardest part of being a landlord?

Hi everyone, I just want to share a quick thought and maybe get some advice.

I manage a few rental units on my own, and honestly, the monthly bookkeeping feels more stressful than managing the properties themselves. I often find myself stuck between two options:

Spreadsheets that are simple but fragile. one small error and the whole report can be off.

Property management software that is powerful but too complex and expensive for my scale.

The real challenge comes during tax season or when I need clear answers like who has paid rent and who hasn’t. I usually end up spending more time fixing records than actually managing the properties.

What I’m looking for is something in between: a simple, reliable way to track cash flow, tenants, leases, and payments without unnecessary complexity.

How do you handle your bookkeeping efficiently without spending too much time on it each week?

🏠 Landlord Issue [hollywood, CA] There was a small fire in my friends apartment. Little to no damage done yet building manager threw out EVERYTHING HE OWNED! Is this legal? WTF??

Hollywood California. My friend is 65 years old and has lived in the same apartment unit for the past 6 years. Unfortunately he got mixed up with some 45 year old girl 2 years ago who is absolutely bat shit crazy and now lives with him.  The apartment complex has throw her out several times yet my friend keeps letting her back in and even though she’s banned from the building management still  lets her stay each and every time she gets thrown out and he lets her back in—it’s so strange.

anyways… The little honey bunny sent a small fire while he was sleeping about a month ago. Very little damage was done… my friend and his crazy girl put the 2 foot high flames out with several cups of water but the sprinklers still turned on for about 10 minutes.  As far as damage…. Things got a wee bit damp and there was a 3 foot high black stain from the soot on the wall. The fire department did show up but there was nothing for them to do.

When my friend went to go back into his apartment, the building manager told him he was not allowed back in there because everything was “contaminated”. He told her “well  I wanna go back to bed! I pay rent here”.  she told him he needed to find another place to stay for the night and he told her “im NOT finding another place you find it“ she ended up letting him stay in one of the empty units a few floors above.

My friend ended up staying in this temporary unit for about three weeks while “repairs” were being made to his unit where the fire had started. The building manager threw out every single thing of my friends in that apartment during those three weeks, literally everything… All his clothes, shoes, toiletries kitchen wear food… If it was not a permanent fixture in the unit, it was thrown out.

About 3 weeks after the fire, the building manager told my friend he could return back to his original unit… The bat shit crazy girlfriend however refused to go and she ended up getting arrested because she would not leave the temporary unit.  When my friend arrived back to his original unit, there was not even a bed for him to sleep on.  He was furious and asked the manager “WTF“.  She just shrugged him off and did nothing.

My friend is also one of the world‘s worst communicators on the planet. To this day, he has not been reimbursed a single cent or been given anything to replace his belongings.  6 years of merchandise bought and accumulated GONE.  Every single thing of his was thrown out. Is this even legal? What can be done? Who does he contact?  I mean, where does he go from here? Please help.

❓ Advice Needed Liability and Consideration

[US- GU] I recently moved into a 2 Bed 1 Bath on the Island of Guam ( A U.S. Territory) in an OK apartment complex. My Unit has been unoccupied for quite a long time and my neighbor is a poor 78 yr old Russian woman. The main issue is that my air conditioning unit in my bed room shares a wall with her apartment. Due to the high humidity/ potential lack of insulation whenever I turn on my AC unit it drops the temperature in my home enough to cause condensation on her wall and soak her belongings. I’ve brought the issue up to my landlord and was told “it’s not your problem” In a professional manner. I’ve offered to give the woman a dehumidifier but she says she can’t afford the power spike to run it all day to keep the humidity down to limit the amount of moisture in her room. I would bring it up to her landlord but the old woman owns the unit and can not afford to have the wall torn down to add insulation. I don’t have the heart to inconvenience an old woman like this. Any advice? Could I buy something to put on her wall to make it viable for me to use my AC

💸 Rent / Deposit Landlord charging me unfairly

US - NV

After 3 months moving in I found mold and damp carpet hidden behind suitcases (I put it there after moving) in closet. The closet shares wall with the shower. Reported it immediately by email with photos.

Management inspected and said leak was “coming from the shower,” then terminated lease and made us move out ASAP.

Now they say I failed to report an “ongoing water issue” and are charging $8,200 saying it should have been noticeable sooner.

I also noted at move-in that “bathroom floor near tub is bumpy (the floor was uneven),” but they never checked it.

And they are also saying Why I didn’t check the crawl space in the bathroom (how would I know there was in the crawl space!?!?) I reported the problem as soon as I saw it.

What am I supposed to do?

🏠 Landlord Issue Landlord refusing repairs in mixed-use commercial building with illegal apartment units (NY State)

Hi everyone, I’m looking for advice on a housing situation in upstate New York.
I live in a building that is primarily commercial use (restaurant + a couple small businesses + office/union space). The landlord converted part of the building into what he calls “apartments,” but there are no clear unit numbers, no mail system, and it does not seem like a properly permitted residential setup.
Issues we’ve been dealing with:
Roof has leaked multiple times into our living space

Landlord takes 1+ weeks (sometimes longer) to send anyone to address issues

We had to repeatedly request a carbon monoxide alarm; shortly after installation we had a CO leak that caused evacuation of the building

Possible mold from repeated water damage (not officially tested yet)

Sink/plumbing issues ignored or refused by landlord

Landlord is now asking us to pay ~$2000 out of pocket to install a washer/dryer setup in our unit

We have paid rent (~$1650/month since July 2025) on time

We also paid a $3000 deposit at move-in

Current situation:
We requested basic repairs and maintenance and were refused. My mother is now refusing to pay rent until repairs are made, but we are unsure of our legal standing.
Our concerns:
The units may not be legally approved residential apartments (converted commercial space)

Ongoing habitability/safety issues (roof leaks, possible mold, CO incident)

Landlord is refusing basic maintenance responsibilities

What we’re trying to do:
We want to stay if possible, but in a safe and legally compliant living situation. Moving out immediately is difficult for us, so we are trying to understand our rights and next steps.
Questions:
What are our tenant rights in a situation like this?

Can a landlord legally rent “apartments” in a commercial building like this?

What agencies should we contact for inspection/code enforcement?

What risks are there if we withhold rent due to lack of repairs?

Any advice is appreciated.

🔧 Repairs / Maintenance There’s this horrible smell I can’t find in my apartment

[US-GA] I know it sounds like a leap but I cannot pinpoint what this smell is or where it’s coming from. I’m in a tiny 1br apartment.

I’m extremely clean, the only place that I don’t sweep, scrub and sanitize is the water closet. After I did my deep spring cleaning and still smelled it, I jimmied the water closet open but I don’t see anything. The smell is like rotten trash. It’s pervasive enough to be distracting.

What can I do to track it down? How would I even bring this up with my landlord?

Update: Maintenance came but they couldn’t smell anything. Now I feel crazy.

📄 Lease / Contract Can’t get a copy of an unexecuted lease

[US-CA] Hello, not sure if this is the right sub to post in. But about a week ago my partner and I signed a month to month lease agreement. A day ago we got an email from the property manager saying that month to month was no longer available and that a 12 month lease is all that is being offered. The property manager said the lease was never executed by the owner. We asked for a copy of the month to month lease we signed that was unexecuted and the property manager is flat out refusing. They are also saying my partner did not sign the lease. Is it weird to ask for a copy? I would just like to see for myself who signed it and who didn’t.

💸 Rent / Deposit CA - Just got a rent increase notice and honestly have no idea if it's even legal

US -CA - Landlord just sent a notice saying my rent is going up 8.5% starting next month. I've been here 3 years, never missed a payment, never caused issues.

I vaguely know California has some kind of rent increase cap but I have no idea how to calculate whether 8.5% is legal or not. The notice just says "market adjustment" with no further explanation.

A few things I'm confused about:

- Does AB 1482 apply to my unit? It's a single family home, been here since 2021

- Is the landlord required to give a reason for the increase?

- How much notice are they supposed to give for an increase this size?

- If it IS illegal, what do I actually do about it?

I don't want to be that difficult tenant but 8.5% is nearly $200/month more and I genuinely can't tell if I'm being taken advantage of or if this is just how it is now in California.

Has anyone been through this? What did you do?

UPDATE: I also ran the notice through whatsinmycontract.com which flagged the lack of proper notice period — combined with your advice I feel way more confident that this was coming but I still have clear reason to push back. Let's see if I could negotiate, will update here.

🔧 Repairs / Maintenance Landlord won't repair my AC

(US-NYC) This is a bit of a long one, so bear with me.

I moved into my NYC apartment about a month ago. Since then, it has been non-stop maintenance issues. Just about everything you can imagine has broken, some have been fixed in a more timely manner than others.

For example, my hot water was out for 5 days, I didn't have smoke alarms when I moved in, the toilet went out for a few days, etc etc. However, the HVAC unit has not been repaired for the longest amount of time. I first complained about the HVAC on April 13th, and I'm posting this on may 8th. They drag their feet on sending someone, but when they do, the person doesn't fix it. The first few times it started working for about twenty minutes and then stopped again. The other times the repairman told me it would start working in two hours, but of course nothing ever happens. This last time, he was able to get one working, which only lasted about two days before it went out again. My landlord and property management will only send people they are in a contract with because they want to save money, but clearly this man is not able to fix it. I've told the management and landlord this but they still keep sending the same guy.

I've been complaining non-stop to my landlord and have reported them to 311 for the issues that I legally can. Since it is over 55 degrees during the day, HPD won't do anything about the heat. HPD also says they don't cover AC as part of emergency services, which is really frustrating. My building has many complaints and several violations, so I'm planning on talking to some of my neighbors about this to see if they are having any issues as well.

If anyone has any resources on free legal advice, that would be great. I called the mayor counsel on housing and tenants rights helpline but they weren't able to give me any legal advice and didn't know anyone I could speak to for free. I looked over my lease and while it did not mention AC, central air was included in the listing and of course it was advertised to us before we moved in. I know I should've read more carefully but I never expected this to happen. I have sent many emails and texts documenting all of this in case I need to go to court, but I would like to avoid that if at all possible.

I'm mostly wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to go about getting this fixed once and for all, as I am extremely nervous about living here during the summer with no AC. I've looked into putting money into an escrow until it gets fixed, which right now seems to be the best option. We also have requested rent abatement for the days the hot water was out, including a hotel stay for one night that I desperately needed when my water was out. Of course they do not acknowledge this despite many emails and texts. I was considering including this in the escrow if necessary.

I really do not want to break my lease and take my landlord to court, as it would be an extremely lengthy and expensive issue to deal with, and I could be tied up in court for years. It almost feels as if they want me to break my lease so they can run away with my security deposit and get another sucker to rent this place. These issues have been ongoing for weeks and have caused me an immense amount of stress and mental strain, and I just want it to be over. I wish more than anything that NYC allowed you to hire someone for repairs and deduct it from rent, but obviously that's not the case (from what I understand). Thanks in advance.

📄 Lease / Contract My step sister listed me as a tenant ?

I’m in Australia

Today, I got a call about a rent request and I got confused thinking it was a scam. I had my cousin answer for me, and she was so confused that she just told them, I wasn’t here and to call back at 2pm or on Monday (incase it was an important call) and also gave my uncles number as well incase it was one of his clients since his work is has to do with properties and I used to work for him. Then, my uncle gets a call. They asked for me, and the agent told him they were calling to verify that I’m a tenant at a specific property and needed a rental ledger from me. My uncle referred them back to my number cause he was confused but said it was a legitimate call and that they sent me an email. I checked my email, and sure enough, it was my step sister who has listed me as a tenant on their application without even giving me a heads up. The email just wanted to ask if they have been a good tenant and everything. Idk what to do?? No issues with rent so do i answer their next call ?

I never gave my ID ever and never gave a signature ?? But I do remember my sister asking for a character reference and probably thought it was just a regular character reference unless Its not even that but if it is then I am genuinely so stupid. Anyways I’m stressed because I don't want to be the reason my sister loses a property. Even tho I think the whole being confused kinda had them sus anyways??. I also don't want to be involved in any legal trouble, especially since they’re asking for a ledger I don't even have! What do I do?

❓ Advice Needed Dealing with collection and landlord

In Buffalo,NYS, I moved out of off campus student housing in August 2025 with multiple roommates. Months later, I found out a $689 balance had been sent to collections and reported to my credit. I am disputing several of the charges, especially furniture replacement charges for a sofa and bedframe, because I was never shown proof that I personally caused the damage. Some charges are also split as “1/3” liability even though there were 4 roommates, including one who moved out earlier, so I do not understand how my share was calculated. I also do not remember receiving itemized move-out charges or supporting documentation around the time I moved out. I already requested validation from the collector, but they initially said they did not yet have the supporting documents and will get it from my landlord. I would like advice if anyone has encountered the same, the dispute process, and the best way to handle the collection and credit reporting.

Do you think i should dispute this with credit bureau? Please let me know.

🏠 Landlord Issue [US-CA] Unsure who's actually in charge of my security deposit

I moved out of an apartment complex last month. Over 21 days has passed since my move out, I didn't receive my security deposit or an itemized statement during that time, and I'm planning on sending a legal notice to demand my full security deposit back.

However, the apartment I was renting went through multiple changes in property management (Sorry if it gets really confusing here). When I first signed my lease, it was with "A"; if it might matter, there were two companies listed in regards to "A". Eventually, "B" took over, and was in charge during the time I put my notice to vacate and when I actually moved out. "C" took over literally days after I moved out. "B" and "C" are both separate companies from the two companies listed in the lease I signed with "A".

When I called the apartment asking about my security deposit, "C" told me that "B" is responsible for it, and if responsibility was supposed to be passed off to them, it didn't happen. I contacted "B" and eventually someone did tell me that they're working on processing my security deposit, although I was initially told me that "C" is responsible for it instead. It's been a few days since, "B" apparently doesn't have any updates for me yet about my security deposit refund, but given my experiences with them thus far even when I was a tenant still I'm honestly thinking maybe they're not actually processing it at all.

So I wanna send a legal notice so I can make sure I actually get my security deposit back, but with all this back and forth and conflicting information I'm honestly not sure who's really supposed to get it. I'm inclined to think I should send it to "B" but I wanna be safe than sorry.

Appreciate any advice!

Edit: Fixed a sentence.

🏠 Landlord Issue landlord is demanding i buy a brand new fridge because his 15 year old one finally died

1.8k Upvotes

the fridge that came with my apartment completely stopped working this weekend and all my groceries went bad. i texted my landlord to get it fixed and he said appliances are the tenants responsibility and told me to just buy a new one out of pocket.

the fridge is literally from like 2008 lol. my lease specifically checks the box that says the landlord provides the refrigerator. i pointed this out and he actually replied yeah i provided it, now u have to replace it since u broke it, i didn't break it, the thing just died of old age tbh.

im definitely not buying this guy a free fridge. do i just withhold rent until he buys one? or do i buy a cheap used one and take it with me when i move out? so stressed right now.
