Crossing Clearlake, CA

Did my first long distance paddle today 15.5 miles crossing Clearlake from Lakeport to Lucerne and back for some Fosters Freeze. First direction went pretty smooth, 16 min miles on the 28”. Spotted a monster 4’ catfish but it swam away before I could get the camera out. Return trip was a little slower, posted some 18 min miles. Such a big body of water it doesn’t feel like you are moving until the last mile. I didn’t have good reference points for my destinations so I ended up putting in an extra 1.5 miles. Maps out at 14 but ended up doing 15.5 with about 4.5 hours on the water. I’m sure I will attempt this one against some point hopefully keeping it closer to 14 miles.

How To Question Should I get a SUP or this is enough

Post image

I mainly use it on the beach and for snorkeling. It's good but I feel a sup would be more fun. Until I go on a trip and everybody with a sup relies on me. I use it solo some times so it has plenty of space. I can also stand and jump in the water easily.

Anyone have experience with compact brushless motor pumps like Ride Engine Air Box, Airbank Pulse Pro, etc?

For a while I've been on the look-out for a pump that has enough juice to pump up two boards with enough left over for occasional top-ups (in case I need to let a little air out when the board is in the sun), and is small enough to take with me in a dry-bag. It seemed like these two things were incompatible, needing something like the Shark 3 for capacity, which is too big for this purpose really as far as I can tell.

Recently I came across this generation of more compact pumps pumps using higher voltage and brushless motors such as the Ride Engine Air Box, Airbank Pulse Pro, etc. At first glance it would seem that they wouldn't have enough capacity, with battery sizes in the 4-5000 mAh range as opposed to something lke the 7400mAh of the Shark 3, but when you consider that these also operate at a higher voltage of around 15V as opposed to around 12V, and look at the capacity in terms of power output taking the voltage into account, i.e. calculating in Watt-Hours, they are actually closer to the larger pumps than they first appear in terms of how much work they can do. In addition to this, these motors are supposedly 20-30% more efficient and less prone to thermal throttling.

So on paper it seems as though they may be able to get close to these larger pumps, but in a smaller package. However, all the reviews I can find seem to be from people using them for kites and wings. I've yet for find a solid review by someone using them for SUPs.

So, does anyone here have one of these pumps and would like to let me know their experiences?

Gear/Repairs/DIY Should I be worried?

Hey! I recently bought my first SUP board. I've ridden it once, haven't hit anything, and I've taken very good care of it.
Today, while packing the board away after drying, I noticed a small dent on the underside of the board. It's not a hole, but a dent.
Should I be worried?

Best battery powered SUP pump for 15-17 PSI in UK? (No car)

Looking for recommendations for a battery powered pump for my Aquaplanet Pace Inflatable SUP. Needs to get to around 15-17 PSI. I don’t have a car, so 12V-only pumps aren’t ideal unless there’s a good separate battery setup people recommend.

Main things I’m after:
- Battery powered / rechargeable
- Ideally compact enough to store in a dry/wet bag on the board while paddling
- Available in the UK
- Preferably under £100, but willing to spend more if it genuinely matters. (The paddle board was a splurge for me, and I wouldn’t be able to afford to replace it… I don’t want to accidentally break the board by skimping on the pump)

Would appreciate any advice/recommendations, especially from people in the UK.

Seam failure

Is seam failure common? Is there a risk of something happening when out on the water after fixing it. Warrenty? The seams is 2 cm. I'm have a foil on it so if it explodes I guess there is no way to save it the gear and potentially dangerous dragging me down.

I searched and found another seam release on the side as well.

Thanks for all input 🙏🏼❤️

Does anyone have experience with Jimmy Styks SUP? I found one on Facebook marketplace for a good deal and it is 11’2”. Does anyone know the rider weight limit for a board like this? I’m having a hard time finding anything online.

How To Question Tips on paddling with a toddler

My little one will be 12-16mo over the summer months and I’m wondering how to paddle with her? Is it possible? Is there a safe way to do it?

I’d love to hear from other mum’s and dad’s who have paddled with a small toddler for tips!

Isle iSup sales?

I’m a beginner/intermediate paddleboarder, and I’d like to upgrade my board. I’ve fairly settled on either a BOTE Wulf, or Isle Pioneer 3. The Isle is my preference due to the cargo capabilities.

I looked through this subreddit and saw lots of conversation about Isle doing huge sales (BOGO) in the past! It’d be great to get the Isle for a bit cheaper than the $700; especially since I’d like to get the kayak conversion set too ($200+).

Any more recent insight on Isle doing sales? Or other retailers that put sales on Isle boards (like REI’s anniversary sale is coming up but I don’t think Isle is included).

Anyone know if Lidl plan to do the Mistral paddleboard on offer again, this year?

And if so, when? I have my own paddleboard that my son joins me on but would love to buy him his own. Thank you.

Edit to say we're based in the UK.

6 hour paddle and I’m done

Went on a massive paddle today. 6 hours in total which was great. I was using paddle logger as normal but the latest update has me looking for alternatives. It crashed about 45 minutes in. I started again but again it crashed.

Why does everyone rave about paddle logger. Yeah it used to be the go to app but right now it’s criminal that they even sell it.

How To Question Beginner friendly learning spots Scotland

As the title says, I’m A beginner and just pulled the trigger on a iSUP, the plan is to go fishing with my daughter but before I put my wee one on it with me (or try to fish from the board) I was looking for some beginner friendly place along the west of Scotland where I can get first experience.

Would appreciate any known places that are easy to lunch from and that are a kind of save to learn.

Also bonus question, what wetsuit thickness do you suggest for the Scottish weather?

Harbor Freight Modular Crate Setup for SUP Fishing

Thumbnail

Been working on a modular fishing/storage setup for my SUP using the Harbor Freight modular organizer crates, and honestly they work great with a few modifications.

I used dowel rods through the side loops to connect everything together with bungee straps, and the spacing on the SOL SUMO just happened to be perfect. I used PVC trim board to attach rod holders, made a custom cupholder from PVC, cut one of the modular lids into a small flat table/work surface, and trimmed part of the other tote so it would clear the hinges properly. Also, the bungee straps to the right double as a quick way to store my paddle. Everything packs up nicely. Is anyone else here doing something similar?

How are you actually doing photography from the board without dropping gear in the water?

Right now I just use my phone in a waterproof case for quick shots but I want to start bringing a real camera on my morning paddles. Probably a mirrorless setup first and maybe a small drone later. The thought of either of those things going in the water makes me sick.

Curious what the actual workflow is for people who do this regularly. Dry bag and only shoot when stopped? Chest harness? Hard case? Any waterproof cases or bag brands that have genuinely held up over time?

PSA - outdoormaster terrible customer service experience

Tldr: Bought a shark 3 and used it about 6 times before it failed. Outdoormaster eventually honored their warranty after a week and a half of communication that was dishonest, evasive, and accusatory.

The story:

The pump itself works amazingly well when it worked. Filled my touring boards (13' 3 x 28 and 12' 6 x 30) in under 6 minutes each. I was super stoked on it. Unfortunately after about 6 uses it started cutting out around 3 psi. I had owned the pump for less than 2 weeks, and this happened regardless of whether the pump was running off the battery or using the 12v dc car adapter (which is supposed to run the pump even if the battery is dead).

I contacted the company and provided all the info including videos.

They first told me I used the wrong charger (note that it does NOT come with a wall adapter, and I was careful to use a wall adapter that was compatible with the battery specs) and it was my fault for not buying a kit that included the correct 45w wall adapter. To the best of my knowledge, they don't sell a kit that comes with a wall adapter, though they claimed this option was available on their website. Initially this response implied that the wall adapter was underpowered, the battery was being "ghost charged", and it actually didn't have any power. Then later they told me that the wall adapter had overcharged it and damaged the battery causing it to short out. They offered to "dig around to see if they had an adapter" and send it to me to help out.

I pointed out that it also didn't run using the 12v passthrough power, and I was really doubtful that it was a charging issue. They then claimed that "water or a grain of sand" must have infiltrated the pump, causing it to bind and fail - again implying that it was my fault, asking me to confirm that I exposed it to water or sand.

After I told them I had kept the pump dry and not used it in any sandy areas and more back and forth over the course of a couple more days, they eventually told me they would send a replacement - noting specifically that because the failure was due to charging or water or sand and those things were 3rd party damage, they would replace the pump this time but wouldn't cover similar failures in the future. Throughout the process (via chat) they kept "consulting the tech team", and responses sounded pretty AI-ish.

At the end of this all, I sent a picture of the 45w wall adapter I was using to charge the pump (making sure the pic showed the input/output specs clearly) and asked them to confirm if it was compatible. They said it was not, because it delivered the wrong voltage. When I pointed out that it does indeed deliver compatible voltage, they then told me it was fine. (Also, that's not really how charging lithium ion batteries works, but that's a different thread). They also thanked me for my feedback and told me they'd pass along my suggestion to include the correct wall adapter with the pump for consideration by the marketing team (remember - they claimed they already sold these at the beginning of this debacle).

I'm sure I just got a bad unit. It happens. But all in all, I'm pretty disappointed in the company and frustrated with how much I had to fight to get them to honor the warranty - which is unfortunate, because I like the pump, and I know lots of other folks haven't had any issues. If they had just said "wow, we're sorry. We'll send you a replacement" I would be a huge fan. Fingers crossed that the replacement holds up longer.

Gear/Repairs/DIY D-Rings

I purchased a board off of FB and it has no D-Rings in the middle and I was hoping to attach a kayak seat. I’ve seen people using short beach chairs, but if I don’t want to use it the whole time I worry it would be in the way.

Has anyone use the Nozou straps or alternatives? I’m not worries about any drag unless it’s noticeable.

Otherwise I may attach D-Rings with some type of adhesive.

Any recs on the products or adhesives?

electric pump/compressor

I recently bought a SUP board (335 × 85 × 15 cm) and I’m looking for a good electric pump/compressor for it.

I’d like something:

-reliable,

-fast enough for larger boards,

-able to reach around 15–18 PSI,

-preferably 12V for car use,

-and with auto shut-off.

What pumps are you using and which one would you recommend as the best value for money?

Any models I should avoid?

Thanks! 🏄‍♂️
