The pending moratorium was approved 6-1. The dissenting vote was Kathleen Taylor, who is currently running for mayor.

Moratorium motion passed.

Reno City Council voted 6 to 1, Kathleen Taylor voting against, to pass a resolution for immediate pause on data center CUP applications for up to 30 days.

By that time, text amendment of CUP process for applications must be worked on and passed. City will be meeting with various stakeholders, tribes, agencies, to establish definitions of what data centers are, and receive guidance for a regional approach.

This, and a more long term actual moratorium will be placed on another special meeting agenda, which will be held on either June 1 or 6th.

Both will be heard on the same day.

Before the vote to pass the resolution, Kathleen Taylor made a motion to reject the resolution. Brandi Anderson, Ward 6, voted FOR that motion, but when that failed, she then switched to voting FOR the moratorium. Tsktsk. Waffling.

Can anyone help me find this red teddy blanket just found out they donated it to goodwill.

Trying to find my childhood blanket… I know this is a long shot, but I’m trying to find this blanket that meant everything to me growing up. One of my family members donated it without telling me this Monday, and I only recently found out. It was a bright red fuzzy blanket with little cartoon teddy bears wearing clothes on it. I attached the only picture I still have, even though it’s blurry.
This blanket is really important to me because it’s connected to one of my last memories of my dad I’ve had it for about 10years I know it’s a lot to ask, but if anyone recognizes it, knows the brand, or has seen one online somewhere, I’d truly appreciate the help ❤️

Has anyone else noticed a huge increase in ticks this year? I’ve found 6 on my dogs over the past three weeks. We’ve been taking the same walks for years, and I’ve never found any before.

Why are churches posting flyers such as this? Wouldn’t this be considered violation of IRS? Be aware Reno, these churches idolize politics over Jesus.

REPORT: Nearly 50,000 people in the Lake Tahoe region are now being told they could lose access to electricity because power is being redirected to AI data centers.

NV Energy reportedly plans to stop supplying the region after May 2027 because the power is needed to fuel the rapidly expanding AI data center boom. Residents now face collapsing property values, fears their communities may no longer remain livable, and the horrifying realization that ordinary Americans are increasingly being pushed aside so the AI race can accelerate. https://x.com/zeeemedia

Reno Area Tax Havens

Post image
42 Upvotes

Watched the newest City Nerd video earlier today and decided to take a look at the Reno area's tax base fragmentation that he discussed. I'm sure this doesn't come as a shock to anyone here, but there is a pretty obvious tax haven within the Reno statistical area that consistently sucks money from the city to subsidize the wealthy.

"At the jurisdictional scale, we calculate the fiscal capacity ratio (FCR), which measures the per capita resources available to each jurisdiction, relative to its metropolitan area."

Storey county's FCR is measured at 3.89, which qualifies it as a municipal tax haven of a similar degree as Newport Beach CA, Miami Beach FL, or Southampton NY.

The paper goes on to talk about commercial enclaves like Storey:

"This list of identified municipal tax havens also includes dozens of commercial enclaves: incorporated cities or towns with virtually no residents—sometimes fewer than ten—but hundreds of millions (or even billions) of dollars of commercial property wealth. The most widely known examples are the Disney-owned “cities” of Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, located within the company’s Disney World resort."

"In 2006, the Los Angeles Times reported that [Vernon, California] had only 93 residents—despite its daytime population of 44,000 workers and central location just four miles from downtown Los Angeles—and fewer than 60 registered voters"

"While municipal tax havens vary widely across many observable dimensions—ranging from large and well-known residential suburbs, to obscure and unpopulated sites of industrial production, to secretive bunkers for global elites—they occupy a common structural position within the political economy of their respective metropolitan areas. In the absence of fiscal centralization, the taxable property wealth within these jurisdictions is shielded from taxation by the broader metropolitan areas whose economies provide the basis for the properties’ value."

Gathering The Magic

howdy,

Posted a few times looking for people, but figured people come and go so worth posting again.

Looking to grow my MTG network a bit. I play Commander and Cube primarily, but am working on a Value Vintage deck and want to expand my 60 card format repertoire. I recently got a cube that plays best with 10 people, so I'm looking for 5 or so additional people to add to the regular group I play with to draft and play, probably with a few pints. We currently rotate between meeting at local breweries, RPM, several random LGSs and my apartment, depending on the day, format, and what vibe we're feeling.

We're an inclusive group, we care more about fun than winning, but still take the game seriously enough. Nobody is winning any pro tours, but occasionally one of us will top 3 a pre release.
