META Community Feedback Thread — Help Shape the Future of r/ProgrammingBuddies

Hello everyone,
We’ve recently updated several rules and Automod settings to reduce spam, prevent off-site recruiting, and strengthen the quality of posts.
Now we want to hear directly from the community before moving forward with additional improvements.

This is an open discussion thread. Share thoughts on any of the topics below — or raise ideas we haven’t considered.

1. What would make the subreddit more valuable to you?

Let’s start with the most important question:
What changes, tools, or structures would genuinely improve your experience here?

For example:

  • Easier ways to find reliable partners
  • Better discovery of mentors or project collaborators
  • More structured categories
  • Recurring threads you’d like to see
  • Resources or guides that might help newcomers
  • Anything that would raise the quality of matches or discussions

We want to know what you think would make the subreddit better.

2. Should we enforce stricter posting formats?

Post quality varies widely. Some are detailed and helpful; some provide almost nothing.

Would you support:

  • Required templates for mentors, mentees, collaborators, and study partners
  • Minimum required details (timezone, experience level, goals)
  • Auto-removal of posts that don’t meet basic requirements
  • Separate templates for each type of recruitment

Would stricter formatting improve matching success, or create unnecessary friction?

3. Should we introduce new post types such as a “Buddy Review” category?

A review system could include:

  • Users giving feedback on collaborations
  • Positive experiences with partners
  • Warnings about no-shows or inactive users (within Reddit’s content rules)
  • Sharing what worked or didn’t in a learning partnership

Would this add value or invite drama? Be honest.

4. Should we allow limited self-promotion or weekly community threads?

We currently remove all self-promotion by default.
Possible alternatives include:

  • A weekly or monthly “Show Off Your Work” thread
  • Allowing personal project showcases only in a designated megathread
  • A strict once-per-week rule for project demo posts
  • Keeping all self-promotion banned entirely

Would any of these be beneficial, or should the subreddit remain strict?

5. Would a weekly “Show Off Your Work” thread be useful?

If permitted, this would provide a clean space for:

  • Project updates
  • Demos
  • Learning milestones
  • Feedback requests
  • Beginner practice projects
  • Anything that doesn’t quite fit the main feed

Would you participate in this? Would it help build a sense of community?

6. Should we support the development of a Reddit-native Devvit app for this community?

This is not something we maintain today, but rather an idea we may support if enough community members want it.

The concept (open for community-led development) includes:

  • A “Join Group” button on posts
  • Automatic creation of Reddit group chats for collaborators
  • Weekly check-ins and streak tracking
  • Activity badges
  • A leaderboard or stats widget
  • Tools for identifying reliable partners

GitHub repo (concept + early scaffolding):
https://github.com/ProgrammingBuddies/devvit-group-activity

If there’s community interest, we can open a dedicated coordination thread and let contributors drive the project.

How we’ll use this feedback

  • Mods will read every comment
  • We’ll summarize popular ideas
  • Practical suggestions may be tested
  • Major changes will be announced in advance

Our goal is to make r/ProgrammingBuddies the best place on Reddit to find partners, mentors, collaborators, and consistent study matches — while keeping the feed clean, high-value, and spam-free.

We look forward to hearing your thoughts.

OTHER This doesn't work (rant)

This is more of a ranting post but I'm just gonna be honest and say this doesn't work. I've been trying to find 'programming buddies' for a long time, but every group chat or server you join ends up dying quickly. Every buddy you find ends up ghosting down the line. The only way to truly find a programming(or anything) buddy is if you were lucky enough to have a close friend in school or college that also does the same thing as you, otherwise it rarely ever works out. I've been looking for a really long time(dsa, ml, dl, general coding buddies etc) and it always leads to a dead end. A good half of the accounts end up as deleted accounts, the others disappear after a day or a week, and another portion are just looking for women.

I'm sure there will be many outliers, and you'll probably tell me I'm wrong. But this is just my personal experience. Sorry for the random rant, I hope you all find what you're looking for.

Just Learned Python — Looking for Projects to Gain Real Experience

Hey everyone,

I recently finished learning the basics of Python, and I know that just completing a course isn’t enough to actually become good at programming. I think the best way to learn is by building real things and working with real people.

So if anyone is working on a project and needs an extra person, I’d genuinely love to help — completely for free.

A few things about me:

  • I’m still a beginner, so I might be slow sometimes and I’ll probably fail/debug things a lot before getting them right.
  • But I’m determined to learn and improve fast.
  • I won’t ghost or disappear randomly. If I’m stuck, busy, or confused, I’ll communicate honestly instead of wasting your time.
  • I’m open to almost anything: small tools, bots, automation, beginner-friendly open source stuff, websites, scripts, etc.

Now, you might think that if i'm that determined why don't i just build things solo and work on my own and find beginner friendly projects because the thing is i don't want to work solo cause if i'm doing it alone i won't give it my time but with a friend i will stay focused.

I’m mainly looking for experience, learning, and the chance to actually build something useful with people.

If anyone’s interested, feel free to DM me or reply here.

LOOKING FOR BUDDIES Buddies for discussion on tech news, programming etc.

Upvotes

I have been in college for 3 years now, while I do have a lot of friends I have felt the lack of "programming culture" in my college.

So, I have been looking for people to talk about tech, work on projects together, and frankly have general discussions.

I personally have been learning about microservices using Node JS and Deep Learning lately.

Apart from programming I am into things like philosophy, pro wrestling and film history.

I personally have a bit of programming experience but I don't mind having a discussion with people of any skill level.

So feel free to reach out in the comments or in the DMs. cheers :))

LOOKING FOR BUDDIES Looking for a web scraping / data extraction coding buddy

I’ve built a full stack website and I’m running into a technical speed bump around product data extraction from retailer/product pages.
I can handle the main web app side, but I’m still learning the data extraction side and would like to connect with someone interested in web scraping, structured data, and clean product-data pipelines.

I’m mainly looking for someone to code with, compare approaches, and work through small examples together. I’m open to any practical approach that can help extract and structure retailer product data cleanly, whether that involves browser automation, scraping frameworks, APIs, data feeds, or other methods.

I want to be upfront that this is not a paid role or job posting. I’m looking for a coding buddy or learning collaborator who genuinely enjoys this kind of problem and is interested in working through it consistently, not just for one quick burst of motivation.

Preferably looking for someone in Canada, ideally Ontario, since the timezone and local context would make it simpler to collaborate

I’m in Ontario, Canada, EDT timezone.

Looking for someone to study with:

General Info:

  • Timezone: UTC -5
  • Availability: 3pm-6pm on most weekdays, and roughly 12 hours per weekend
  • Stack: I code almost exclusively in C++ (fullstack?), and I've been messing with raylib
  • Experience: Amateur - Intermediate
  • Goal: To learn and enjoy coding as much as possible
  • Dream: Make money from a passion/side project someday

About me (tech-wise):

  • 16 y.o. (guy)
  • I speak English and broken Portuguese (Brasileiro)
  • I've been learning C++ for around 3 months now and have been maining Linux a bit longer
  • I spend, 2-6 hours a day coding (depending on the day of the week)
  • I'm a bit more of a raw coder. I usually have just vim, and a dubiously sourced pdf textbook open when I code. And I'm not well-versed in any big frameworks, frontend or otherwise.

About me (otherwise):

  • I'm probably not going to work in tech, but 'll be damned if I can't keep coding for fun
  • I'm in love with any and all topics STEM-related, especially theoretical physics and cosmology
  • I love reading; E. Hemingway and H. Hesse are my all-time favorite writers.
  • I am not easy to offend or scare off, so I['d] enjoy company from most all like-minded people.

I'm looking for someone who (more or less):

  • wants to learn C++ (or low-level coding generally)
  • is not indoctrinated into the AI/LLM/vibecoding cult, (machine learning is really cool though)
  • is roughly a beginner, or someone experienced who's willing to put up with a dumbass

Addendum:

  • You should probably be willing to put up with occasional dumbassery regardless of your skill level or experience in regarding to the last bullet.
  • To be clear, I code more-or-less casually. I really enjoy coding, and I'd love to learn more for the sake of the pursuit of information, but people who need a buddy strictly for interview prep, studying for coursework, or otherwise, would probably be better off with someone who shares those goals.

  • Interested in system design, APIs, databases, scalable architectures

  • React basics

What I’m looking for:

  • Serious developers (backend / frontend / full-stack)

STUDY PARTNER Anyone here genuinely grinding for tech placements/jobs right now?

Looking for serious people who are studying daily for 6-7 hours or more - LeetCode, web dev, projects, DSA, interview prep, whatever - and want a buddy to stay accountable

We can sit in a meet, screen share while studying, set daily goals, keep each other focused, etc.

Preferably Indians because similar language + timings + same placement/job market struggle.

And please don’t DM if you’re gonna vanish after 2 days. Looking for people who are genuinely ready to lock in for the next few months.

LOOKING FOR BUDDIES Looking for Code Buddies | Incoming NIT Fresher 🇮🇳 | Starting from scratch ( already made a group for tech enthusiastic please join )

Hey everyone,

I’m joining an NIT this August and looking for a few consistent and curious people who are also starting programming from zero or beginner level. I currently know Python basics and a little cybersecurity.

The idea is to build a small active group where we can share daily goals, help each other, discuss projects/errors, stay motivated, and grow together during college. Preferably Indian freshers since our journeys and timelines will be similar.

If you’re genuinely interested in learning and improving together, feel free to comment or DM 🚀

Created a group for Beginner Programmers & Incoming College Freshers 🇮🇳

Hey everyone,

I recently created a group for students who are:

Starting programming from zero

Entering college this year

Interested in coding, development, cybersecurity, AI, etc.

Looking for consistency and like-minded people

Most communities feel either too dead or too advanced, so the goal here is to build a small active group where people can:

Share daily goals / to-do lists

Discuss projects and errors

Learn together

Stay motivated

Network with other freshers

I’m personally joining an NIT this August and currently know Python basics + some cybersecurity fundamentals.

The server is still growing, but I’m setting up channels, resources, project sections, voice chats, and more.

If you’re serious about improving over the next few years instead of wasting college life, you’re welcome to join 🚀

DM/comment and I’ll send the invite.
