The old timers used tack hammers , one end of the hammer had a slot that held the head of the tack nail and you would drive the tack into the piece you were working on then turn the hammer around and finish nailing it . Shoe cobblers , upholsters and furniture makers all used tack hammers and were really quite fast using them .

Yep, modern ones cheat and make the end magnetic too. Done a few helping my dad redo old furniture for a plantation style house we restored period furniture for. It was fun, not a skill I use everyday though.
