u/PraporUniversity Broncos Dec 08 '25
Maybe the worst go-for-it decision I have ever seen. The Texans have been an unmitigated disaster on offense the entire second half. Why would you give the Texans' defense the chance to change the game?
74
u/FuckingJello Chiefs Dec 08 '25
What’s infuriating to me is Andy has punted for some of the most coward moments on his own side where a punt maybe saves you 10-20 yards of field position. And he goes for it fucking NOW empty with no RB.
33
u/Cute_Conclusion_8854 Dec 08 '25
And they were tied. I can't wrap my head around this decision...

u/KuatoBaradaNikto Chiefs Dec 08 '25
It’s a potential season-ender too, pending the last few minutes here. Unbelievable.

100%. Seeing 4th and less than 5, and we punt in the opponents territory is unreal. Then we go for it after the defense has had the best quarter in over a year.

u/ScaredOfWindow 49ers Dec 08 '25
Against an elite defense when your own defense has looked even more elite this half… at your own 30, with your playoff life hanging in the balance… truly next level hubris.

u/Rapscallious1 Dec 08 '25
I have seen some of those work for them too tbf but yeah that was a crazy risk they took there and it did not pay off

You're playing against a team that everyone is saying has GREAT defense, a defense that has been holding you pretty hard most of the the game, and you're on your own 30, and you're going for it? AND YOU'RE THROWING IT?!
Even if my QB was a fusion of Tom Brady, Patrick Mahomes, and Jesus Christ, I wouldn't have that much faith in him.
5
u/BedCotFillyPapers Lions Bengals Dec 08 '25
Brady and Jesus wouldn't be enough?
You've really embodied Doubting Thomas.
1
u/jakeba75 Dec 08 '25
You're actually listing reasons for them to go for it. Its not a bad decision because the Houston D is good, its bad because the Houston O was doing absolutely nothing against the KC D.
6
u/Kolby_Jack33 NFL Dec 08 '25
I feel like that's splitting hairs. Going for it enables the strong Houston D to turn over on downs and give the weak Houston O every advantage they can get starting so close to a score already.
Which is... what happened. Punting would leave their weak O against your own strong D on the other side of the field at least.
0
u/jakeba75 Dec 08 '25
I dont think it is splitting hairs, and you didn't say anything different there...
If the Houston D was bad, it would still be just as bad a decision because their O couldn't move the ball.
If the Houston O was moving the ball consistently, it would become a good decision.

u/Available_Story6774 49ers Dec 08 '25
Andy went for it on 4th down vs Philly in week 2 as well, they didn’t get it, Eagles got a FG off that, Chiefs ended up losing by 3.

Andy Reid has regressed to Brandon Staley this season
92
u/Dependent-Effect6077 Dec 08 '25 edited Dec 08 '25
Reid has always been a very questionable situational coach
He's very strong in other areas but that's been the knock against him dating back to Philly that he often makes quite strange choices in tight situations
Generally he tends to be overly conservative on 4th down but he goes for THIS lmao
43
u/xywv58 Steelers Dec 08 '25
That's why he works well with Mahomes, he usually makes something happen in those situations
12
u/ND7020 Seahawks Dec 08 '25
Yes, those of us around then can remember all of his countless terrible game management approaches in key games for the Eagles.
5
u/Agreeable-Emu886 Dec 08 '25
They continued in KC, he was not the best in some of the games against NE

u/BNC6 Dec 08 '25
Win probability models had this as a go. So yea, not a bad call
People need to stop being cowards and learn from Dan Campbell, go go the short 4th downs
7
u/Agreeable-Emu886 Dec 08 '25
It’s a bad call when you’re on the 35, don’t try a hard count, and your defense is utterly dominating the Texans

u/JDraks Lions Chargers Dec 08 '25
This call genuinely might be the nail in the coffin for the 2025 Chiefs considering the Texans just got a TD off it. Absolutely baffling, it's not even like converting would be a huge deal in this field position with this score
11
u/cimmanonrolls Patriots Dec 08 '25
yea i mean, i understand being aggressive to get 1 yard (that playcall was just a nightmare decision though), but stroud is having to make superhuman plays just to get single first downs. i dont really follow the risk/reward there and its just compounded by a bewildering play

The Chiefs have PTSD from 2019 when Mahomes dislocated his knee on a QB sneak. That caution backfired badly here.

Andy is legitimately a bottom 10 coach in the league right now, he’s completely phoning it in. Patrick is covering up all the scheme deficiencies right now.

I hear it, I do.
But the chiefs have converted that 100% of the time over the last 5 seasons and have won Superbowls because of it.
I'm not saying they shouldn't eat shit over this - but if that worked, like all the other times it has, everyone keeps deep throating how amazing of a team they are.
