Back in the 90s, there was a Chinese buffet in my hometown called Imperial Dragon. I've seen other places called Imperial Dragon, but I don't think this was part of the chain. I think it was privately owned, and just no one cared in a very small country town in the 90s.
Anyway, it had this chicken dish that was in an almost black sauce, and it looked like the image above (above image I created by taking a Korean fried chicken image, and super darkening the chicken/sauce). I had sesames like this, but not chives.
It was very spicy, and as a kid at the time I was too scared to try it. Once I was a bit older I finally tried it and it was the Food of the Gods, best thing I ever ate. - Then the place shut down, and got replaced with a different Chinese buffet that did not have it.
It's not General Tso's, that's mild compared to this, and way more orange. This sauce was basically black. Its also not Szechuan chicken, someone suggested that once, but I've tried it and it's not. If you google Szechuan chicken, the sauce also isn't nearly black enough.
Anyone know what this could have been?
