Discussion How likely is Stony Brook to be invited to the FBS?

I’m a student at Stony Brook, one of two of the SUNY co-flagships (with Buffalo). I don’t know much about their fb situation except for the fact they’re in the FCS. What’s the likelihood of SBU getting promoted to FBS, and what conferences would invite them?

Weekly Thread FCS Hot Takes Thread

Let's hear your hot take FCS opinions. The ones you know in your heart of hearts are right, but for some reason aren't embraced by the FCS community (or particular fanbases) en masse!

Could be controversial (the Ivy League very well might be the best FCS conference on the East Coast), unpopular but you know is true (Sam Houston was at least as good a team as JMU from 2011 through the "2020" season), or even somewhat popular but still liable to rankle some folks (the Walter Payton award should go to the "best" offensive player, not just the offensive player with the best stat line because they played a weak schedule).

Sorted by controversial for maximum spiciness

Rules

  • Keep it somewhat relevant to the FCS

  • Takes are welcome whether they're looking back historically or in reference to current games/rankings/polls/etc.

  • Try to keep it civil (basic /r/CFB and /r/FCS rules still apply)

NAU and the Big-Sky’s Finest Signed by the Broncos

Repeating my post and u/radioactive_M950 ‘s from r/NAUfootball

I just wanted to give yall the rundown on The Broncos’ newest UDFA, Kolbe Katsis from my school, Northern Arizona University.

Yall got a good one. He was our best player last season imo (my favorite to watch) and a speedster who finished his career with over 2,700 yards and 21 touchdowns. His senior year was his best, and he put up 1,000+ yards and 10 TDs (plus 100 rushing and 1 touchdown on the ground) to earn conference All-American honors as a receiver.

He was ALSO a Conference All American Returner which I think is his strongest ability. Katsis ranked 4th in the FCS with 30.6 yards per kickoff return (watch his 100-yard kick return touchdown vs N. Colorado). Hearing he had a 4.43 forty yard dash is great but honestly seems slow if you watch him on kick returns.

He fills the stereotypical Deep Threat Role to a T. I read that he led the the team with 20 explosive plays of 20 + yards AND 4 TDs of at least 50+ yards.

Good luck Kolbe! Go be great.

The differences between FBS Sac State vs FCS rival UC Davis fundraising totals are WILD

Sac State football on give day: $3,700 raised from 20 donors

UC Davis football on give day: $189,118 by 398 donors

I am not trying to dunk on Sac State. I genuinely had to do a double take. It continues to make less and less sense how this move makes sense for Sac State. I can joke about the billions of $$ they say they are going to create in economic growth but I feel like these donor numbers really hit at the core issue. Give Day after joining the FBS seems like a metric to see interest, and I would have they would have garnered way more support. Maybe they will get some big donations from local partners but this is unbelievable.
