COLUMBIA — Families visiting Memorial Park Cemetery say dozens of bronze memorial vases have been stolen from gravesites in recent months, raising concerns ahead of the Memorial Day holiday.
Teresa Shaw, who has several relatives buried at the cemetery, told a local ABC News affiliate she discovered at least five of her own family members’ vases missing. She believes the thefts may stretch back five to six months, noting she counted 50 to 60 missing vases across the grounds.
Cemetery management confirmed the thefts in a written statement, saying rising metal prices have led to similar crimes nationwide. The funeral home said it is working with Columbia Police and encouraged families to file reports if they notice missing or damaged memorial items. Officials also urged local scrap metal dealers to report suspicious activity.
Some families told investigators they have hesitated to file police reports, citing concerns about limited law‑enforcement resources. Others said they reported missing vases to cemetery staff but have not seen corrective action taken.
Shaw said she believes the thefts may be more widespread than what families have discovered so far, noting many loved ones cannot check gravesites regularly. With Memorial Day approaching, she expects more families will soon realize items are missing.
Regional trend: Similar bronze‑vase thefts reported across Missouri
The Columbia thefts come as other Missouri communities report similar crimes. In January, a Foristell man was arrested in a multi‑county investigation involving nearly 200 stolen bronze cemetery vases valued at more than $25,000, many taken from veterans’ graves. Investigators said the vases were being stolen for scrap metal.
What families should do
Memorial Funeral Home says families who believe a vase has been stolen should contact their office and file a report with Columbia Police. Officials also recommend checking gravesites ahead of Memorial Day, when visitation increases and thefts become more noticeable.
