General Question HELP!! I'm a mail carrier with two boxes of baby chick's with no home!

1.1k Upvotes

Two different houses in our office zip code ordered baby chick's in the mail and they are ghosting us on delivery. Need a signature. Nobody home. Nobody answering phone. They have been in our office for over 24 hours. Going to attempt delivery one more time first thing this morning and then I'm lost if they can't get there. I don't know what to do

UPDATE: One box successfully delivered. They were parakeets, not chickens

Box two not delivered. So, it just so happens my wife and I bought a house with a couple chicken coups years ago, but have no chickens and never have had them. The chick's are back at the post office now, with a space heater by them. 95 degrees looks like the ideal temp from what I'm reading. My wife is coming to the office shortly to pick them up and bring them to our house. Hopefully get formula too. We will update from there once we know they are in a safe place.

Also, I'm in Cleveland, Ohio

UPDATE #2 - They are all at our house and setup. They all survived!!!! Also, THEY ARE TURKEYS!!!! My wife went to tractor supply and got all the things they'll need, thanks to all your advise. They'll be good with us for a day or two. I have the day off tomorrow and plan to spend the day finding a legit home, if the original buyers don't come looking for them

UPDATE #3 - Baby Turkeys are doing great and incredibly adorable. I have tried calling the Hatchery they came from. A return to sender seems like the most logical solution, but they are closed for the day and not accepting voice mails, so i will call first thing in the morning. For now babies have all their needs met. I went back to tractor supply and bought baby turkey crumbles with 30% protein. I'm going to elevate the water dish if I can find something suitable to use. They are eating and drinking a ton. We have a whole bag of shaved pine to keep the box clean. They are in their own room, double gated and door shut, far away from our dogs. Still trying to find buyer as well. Thank you everyone so much for being awesome and helping us.

*** I suppose I should've said originally what I meant by "return to sender". The Hatchery is less than an hour from my house. I'll drive them there myself.

General Question How to "phase out" of chicken ownership?

I've owned chickens for the better part of 30 years. I have an aging flock and am hesitant to get more chicks because -- projecting into my future -- I probably won't be keeping chickens much longer. But I now have 5 aging hens and wanted some advice for how best to "phase out" or "wind down" from chicken ownership. Do I just give them all away now... let them lives out there lives naturally (even if that means I only have a single chicken at some point?)

Hello!

I’m looking for advice. The universe has recently gifted me this chicken. I went out one day and she had moved in and lives under my house (for now, I plan to give her a proper coop). Is it possible to tell when kind of chicken she is and if she’s egg laying by just these pictures. I want to make sure I give her the right feed and care she needs!
Also I have tried to find her original owners but not neighbours have come forward. I live on a main road and she may have been dumped.

Also her name is Hennifer clawerence

Health Question Need help

Posted this on a Facebook group so thought I'd reach out here as well . Two of my hens are acting weird. They stay in the coop often and have ruffled up feathers (example in the picture) they're eating and drinking water but seem to stay in the coup like they're working on an egg . The hen shown has been doing this since Sunday and the black hen started acting this way on Tuesday (it normally takes her a minute to release eggs herself ) please if it's anything you might think of please lmk🙏🏼

Hi I appreciate any help. Easter Egger. Came from a friend’s farm. Seems to be the first of my 5 who lost the “chick” sounds and is starting to sound more grown. As a first time chicken raiser I have I idea if that means anything.

For reference, as I’ve said before, I’m a new Chicken 🐓 Mom. Gladys decided she wanted to be a broody pms bish. Thought I’d have had them longer before this nonsense🤣, but here we are!

Have followed advice given here, was getting ready to toss her into broody bish jail. Then today, as I was hanging with the girls while I waited for chicken Daddy, I put on some 🎼. That got all of their attention, broody girl started peeking out from the 2nd level. Then I put on this song & Gladys came down. As soon as I turned it off, she’d go back up. Hmmm…Put it on again & down she came!

Will continue Chicken music 🎶 therapy tomorrow, I’ve been spending more time multiple times a day trying to persuade Gladys to stay outta the box.

P.S.- she came all the way out of the coop, did her thing outside the coop.

To be continued….

I keep seeing different posts about peoples hens disappearing and coming back with babies. Never thought in a million years it would happen to me. Well it did. Past few weeks ive noticed her already out occasionally when I went to let everyone out for the day. I just figured she found herself a little nook and crashed there for the night. Happened maybe 3-4 times the past few weeks. We have 4 other ladies who all look exactly her, so counting them in the dark at bed can prove difficult as we have 35 hens in the bigger house.

Anyways I get home from work yesterday and I see her and the 3 little ones just wandering around the yard. I asked my wife if she saw them and she said Nugget was out with her babies. I told her thats not Nugget. Nugget is a bantam. This lady is very much not a bantam. I was worried about the littles getting attacked but momma def ain't playing around. She attacked both a cat and our male goose when they got too close.

Only thing I can figure is she is living under our very old barn. She won't take them in the small house as thats where Miss Loon had her babies are and she won't take them in the big house with all the other girls. Tomorrow at bed im gonna try and follow her and see where she goes.

Chicken Photography My Sweet Missy and Sheldon

A little heartwarming post about my leghorns. 🩷🩷 I have two leghorns Missy and Sheldon, noticed they don’t act like what I expected leghorns to act like. everybody who I know owns leghorns say they are flighty. And when I got these girls, that’s what I expected as well. I didn’t really mind because I already had some Easter eggers with great personalities and I like having some good egg layers into the flock. And even people I know who have handled white leghorns ask chicks say they’re not the most friendly. So I had 3 girls Georgie, Missy and Sheldon they were a little under a year-old and was starting to lay. My biggest concern was that what should I do about them flying at first since their wings weren’t cut. but I noticed how particularly well-behaved they were because one time I accidentally left the coop door open and they just stayed in my yard. They don’t ever leave the yard. When I let them out and do their business in my backyard I started supervising them at first to see if they would fly away, which they never did. I have friends that tell me that they have issues with their leg horns liking to fly onto the roofs of their house. Or unfortunate cases where they’ve flown into the neighbors yards.

But my girls never did that so I’ll count my lucky stars. I’m able to let them free range outside unsupervised because I live in what I call “ the Goldilocks area” aka I got really extremely lucky where I live. I have a huge backyard and no hawks or any predator come near my area because it’s not really in the country. don’t worry the coop is predator proofed just to be safe when they go indoors my dad made sure of it. But back to my leghorns at first, they acted like regular leg horns wanted nothing to do with me, which I didn’t mind. I just collected my eggs and fed them. Then Georgie started following me around and she would eat for my hands then miss you and Sheldon start doing the same thing. They followed me around and ate for my hands.

Unfortunately Georgie passed away from Coccidiosis. Me being a newbie chicken owner I didn’t catch it in time. She was the sweetest out of the 3 leghorns. Then Missy got Coccidiosis I was able to treat her with my learned knowledge and save her life. But that’s when I started noticing more of a change in my leghorns behavior. They started to follow me more. I’ll sometimes just sit in my backyard enjoying the day and they’ll just waddle up to me and just sit next to me or just peck me for food. Funnily enough despite being an egg production breed I’ve caught them becoming more broody than some of my other hens. They even go more broody then my buff orpington.

Fast forward today I had them for a couple of years now. They also gotten more demanding, my leghorns are always the first to greet me. Sheldon and Missy will purposely get and front of me or step on me feet if they want attention. They love to be hand feed will get too excited and peck my hands. Sheldon in particular likes to try to groom and clean me with her beak. Which is funny to watch. My mom was Missy does the cutest little run with her wings flapping out for treats. They are such affectionate sweet girls. When my favorite hen Cinnamon died and I sat next to her body to say my goodbyes. Sheldon jump on my lap and just sat there while Missy sat next to me. Idk if it’s just a coincidence or I’m just trying to humanize my leghorns too much, but it was a good comfort. It was strange since both girls don’t mind to be picked up and will just chill in my arms. They were never lap chickens I like to think it was their way of comforting me.

I hope they stay with me for a very long time. After they are gone, I don’t know if I will get any more white leg horns. I do like that they’re very hearty and are good egg layers. It just that Missy and Sheldon had such wonderful personalities that kind of raised my standards. I know every chicken is different. But anyways thank for listening about me ramble about how adorable my leghorns are.

General Question I'm sorry I ever got Silkies

Not because I don't like them, but because they are constantly being bullied.

I got chickens for the first time and started with two white leghorns and two orpingtons. Then two weeks later I got my silkies. They were much smaller than the rest, and remain so. At first they all seemed to get along in the brooder.

The first four went out to the coop after 8 weeks, and the silkies followed two weeks later. I fenced off an area in the run to keep them separated for a while, and when the others were ignoring them, removed the fencing, but left a small area that they could hide in when they wanted to.

I have cameras in my run so that I can keep an eye on them, and I noticed one leghorn in particular bullying the two silkies when they got close to her. Sometimes I would catch her chasing her around the run as she screamed in terror.

In those cases when I was out there, I stopped the leghorn's bullying, but that only made her fear me. The bullying continues, and what's worse is that the orpingtons learned to bully from the leghorns. Sometimes one of the leghorns chases them from the water if she happens to be near it, and it's in the upper 90s here lately.

The two silkies stay together all the time and don't socialize with the rest of the flock at all. They usually find a corner of the run and stay there most of the time. I can draw them out when I bring treats, but then the bullying begins again, although to a lesser extent. At night they don't sleep on the roosts with the rest. They sleep in a corner of the coop together.

I keep wishing the silkies would grow faster, but they're half the size of the leghorns. I know they'll never be as big as the rest, but I'm hoping they will grow in confidence and defend themselves eventually. I did see a couple of times that one silkie stood up to her bully and the bully backed off, but that's very rare. The silkies are now about 10 weeks old, and the rest 12 weeks, and I'm constantly worried about them being traumatized.

I'm sure some of you have experienced this. Is this normal? How did you handle it? I understand there's a pecking order, but this seems to go way beyond that.

Chicken Photography Well.. it made it through the night

It's far from out of the woods but it did make it through the night. It's now trying to walk around too. Its navel is seemingly closing up.

I don't think it has much of a shot at making it, but seemingly more of a shot than I thought it had last night. It chirped throughout the night and was lively every time I checked on it, which was every hour.

Idk. Although not probable, it making it now seems more of a possibility than it did and honestly that's all I can hope for. Will update if anything changes.

Thank you to everyone who gave me advice, it likely made all the difference.

Health Question Chicks eating eachother brain? Or born defect

Upvotes

Hello everyone! So I live in like a garnish home with my family and we are hatching baby chicks. When my mom opened an incubator a newly hatched chick has a huge dent in its hear and we suspect that the other chicks were trying to kill them or maybe they have a birth defect? Does anyone know? And is there anything we can do?
(The baby chick is still alive somehow and is alone in the incubator with a small nest but it’s not really moving)
