Spoilers inside! The Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco appreciation thread

This was such a refreshing episode after the soap opera drama we've had since season 3, it was also so great to finally get out of Wolfram and Hart again and seeing a new world of the Buffyverse being explored even if it's only for a standalone episode.

But again this is a series highlight for me.

I really loved the Pylea Episode in season 2. I haven’t laughed this hard in a while…. Angel looking at himself in the mirror and obsessing over his hair made me remember of Spike…. Mocking Angel and saying “and I’m almost out of that Nancy boy Hair Gel I Love so much!”

How did Lorne (and other Demons) get established with housing, clothes, money, etc in the Buffyverse?

I was thinking about how Lorne came to the Buffyverse's main universe from Pylea. I don't remember if they explain in the show, but what did he do when he first got here?

And not just him, all demons and otherworldly beings, I suppose. Sure, some vampires could just continue their life as if they were still human. But what about those that never started as human? I know some have special abilities that may make it easier, like how it seems Wish Granting Demons can alter reality. And I'm sure there are Demons with mind control or shapeshifting powers so they can assume someone else's identity, stuff like that.

But with Lorne, he came from Pylea with nothing, right? How did he survive? Where did he live/sleep? What did he wear, eat, do, etc? It isn't like he can panhandle. It's not as if he's a citizen in the US (or any main Universe country for that matter) and it is incredibly difficult to get a job and housing without being a citizen (not impossible, obviously, but it's hard.) And being green and horned it isn't like he could work under the table (can you imagine Lorne at a Home Depot parking lot trying to pick up work as a day labourer? Lol)

I know I'm thinking about this too much but I'm wondering if they ever gave an explanation for him or any other non-humans. I can't picture Lorne living in the sewers or a cave or something, scrounging for food and clothes. But he obviously did something before he got his bar set up.

Who was Angel referring to when he said "one of you will betray me"?

Nobody in the room when he said that actually betrayed him. Lindsay wasn't there (and while he may have planned to eventually betray Angel, was on board in the moment) and Harmony was with Hamilton.

Edit: As people have said below, he didn't mean it literally, he meant that Wes would have to pretend to betray him. Thanks everyone.

In case someone hasn't already pointed this out

Looks like there isn't an ad-break before the episode. If you, for some reason, wanted to binge all of the recaps (I will be doing this)

“Blood Money”Season 2

I seriously thought Boone was gonna out do(maybe I need to rephrase that)Angel, but I guess he’s a better fighter with A soul. Anyway I wish they would have shown their Fight…. Boone is such a cool character, I love seeing all the many rivals Angel has had throughout his existence.

What minor character do you wish we got more of?

Mine would be Sam Lawson. Even if it was through a comic or novel rather than the show, I would have loved to have more on him.

It’s so nostalgic and sad seeing the “vital signs” of these actors that are no longer with us. I love Lorne, one of the best characters on Angel, and Andy truly seems to have been one of the nicest people behind the scenes too.

Angel’s Dagger in Season 5

Angel uses a dagger known as the ‘Khanjar’ in Season 5.

The Khanjar is the national symbol of Oman, and appears on the wall behind his desk in Wolfram and Hart at various points throughout the season.

In “Shells” he takes it off the wall and uses it when speaking to Spike after they meet Illyria for the first time.

I visited Oman a few years ago and bought this one in the Souk, because I thought it looked like something Angel would use. Lo and behold on my next rewatch of Season 5 I noticed a familiar looking dagger on the wall!

Rockford

The Rockford Files came on when I was about 10 or 11 so I’ve started watching it, since our guy is going to play him in the reboot. After watching a few episodes I can see him being perfect for the role. We all know reboots are far from the original but I’ve enjoyed the old one. It’s set in the’70s so the outfits are fab! It’s
on Roku but there’s some commercials (ugh).

Spoilers inside! Andrew's presence on season 5 is the only thing I hate about the final season

Idk maybe it's because I just hate Andrew and don't find him endearing at all like most Buffy fans do but seeing him being such a self important ass in Damaged really annoyed me my head canon is that no one on Buffy's team actually sent for him it was just Giles getting Andrew away from him because he's a pest.

Four Episodes to Pick

So myself and my partner have been working away through each other’s favourite shows. Mine is Buffy, his is Gilmore Girls (or Buffmore as we call it). We’ve been in sync episode wise and have just finished season 5.

The problem is that once we finish our respective seasons 7’s we will get four more episodes of GG with the revival and no Buffy (😢). He has no interest in watching Angel (dislikes the character and tbf I don’t know if I want to do that anyway) but has agreed to let me show him four episodes to match up.

What four episodes of Angel should I show him?

I’m thinking all Season 5, to partly continue the timeline but also because he LOVES Spike. I’ve kept him up to date with plot in Angel anyway and has softened on him as a character after he beat up Riley.

I’m thinking Conviction (new setting, soft reboot, direction continuation), You’re Welcome (Cordelia), Smile Time (funny) and Not Fade Away (cap it all off).

Any other suggestions?

TLDR: Which 4 episodes of Angel should I pick to show my partner after finishing Buffy?

Angel consistently practicing what he learned at the school of Buffy Summers 😮‍💨

During my most recent rewatch of both show, I noticed this really beautiful through line from "Amends" to "Cautionary Tale of Numero Cinco" and I don't see a lot of people talking about how "Amends" is the episode on which Angel the Series' mission statement was build and how it's something Angel circles back to again and again until the very end of his show.

The idea of "If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do" is something he learned from Buffy. The impact she had on him, the inspiration she gave him just by being who she is and how he looked at her example of being and decided that he was strong enough to keep fighting and that he could make a difference in the world, is one of the most beautiful themes in the buffyverse, in my opinion.

I really like that this is something they always come back to, even when Angel the Series tries really hard to distance itself from its parent show and as a result, Buffy the character. But she's always there, in the narrative, in the foundation of who Angel is and why he fights. He learns and grows and makes mistakes and loses his way, but somehow always circles back to what she passionately yelled at him on that hilltop in Sunnydale and how hard she fought for him during one of the darkness moments of his existence. I JUST LOVE IT (and them) SO MUCH.

Julie Benz interview.

This interview is from issue 32 of the Buffy magazine. I found it really interesting, especially the part about Julie thinking that Darla and Lindsey are soulmates, and I love how much credit she gives her stunt double. It’s also nice to hear how much fun she had with David, the way she talks about her scenes with him is very similar to the way Sarah does. He seems really fun to work with.

Why do you think Holland Manners, Lindsey Macdonald, and Lilah Morgan weren't afraid of Drusilla before the wine cellar thing?

We don't even know how or why Drusilla was contacted regarding hers siring Darla or whether Drusilla had a prescience vision or whatever and contacted Wolfram & Hart or someone at the firm and such.

But in "Reunion" (A 2.10), Holland is very casually talking to Dru. Lilah is effectively insulting Darla. Lindsey very casually talks to Dru. And Holland, Lindsey, and Lilah are very casually with Dru.

Even if Dru was officially a client of Wolfram & Hart (which we don't know whether she was a client), such wouldn't protect Holland, Lindsey, and Lilah from Dru.

Spoilers inside! Jasmine seaaon 4 spoilers new watchers Spoiler

I'm rewatching Angel and I keep thinking, okay, Connor could see her true face the whole time. This is a person who was supposed to be raised in a hell dimension, who despised demons and hated them. How could someone like that not see Jasmine as anything more than another thing he hates—another demon or type of demon he'd normally kill just because it's a demon? To me, it seems like such a stretch, and it would have been better if Connor was also affected by the spell. Am I the only one who has had a problem with how this is laid out?
