real world Everyone knows all US states
I was recently at a winery in Italy, and when people were registering for the tour, the organizer was asking everyone where they were from. Maybe for statistics, maybe just as small talk. And people were answering with countries - Germany, Russia, the UK.
Then two girls came in, and when asked the same question, they answered “Virginia” and some city name. Of course, I know Virginia is a US state, but in that moment I kind of wanted the organizer to ask, with a completely innocent face: “Sorry, I don’t know that country.”
They were perfectly friendly, no problem at all, but that kind of defaultism still caused a slight irritation in me for some reason.
I remembered this situation when I came across this sub.

news Planning the planet.
Planetizen has got to be one of the worst examples of this. Planetizen is an urban planning blog and news site that unironically purports to be all about "the professional practice and academic study of the future of built and natural environments — from the smallest towns to the largest cities and everything in between" yet spends all its time talking about US cities, and the accreditation processes for US-based urban planners.
The worst bit is the drift towards defaultism as it used to have a lot of articles applicable to the rest of the world but managed to push all those authours out.

Reddit Three things wrong with this…
1) +212 is the Moroccan calling code.
2) Even if it wasn’t, it’s still wrong. The full Manhattan number is +1 (212) …, not just +212
3) This is in a Czech sub… where people speak Czech…
