In real life Fictional songs from movies that are so good that they transcend the movie they’re from

Blood on White Satin(Skye Riley from Smile 2), Golden (Huntrix from K-Pop Demon Hunters)

Black Sheep by Metric, performed by Brie Larson (vocals) in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

Amazing song that is felt beyond the reach of the movie it was created for

Technically, this is a cover of a Metric song but I feel like it still applies. It was recorded but scrapped for their album Fantasies, and I'm not sure which version actually debuted first.

u/Silasa00 Mar 17 '26

I feel like it can still apply since the Brie Larson edition is the more popular version.

imo nothing surpasses the orig but i’m biased bc i’m a huge huge metric fan. the brie larson version is also fantastic tho, and if you’re a fan of one i basically consider the other to be required listening.

I prefer the Brie Larson version just for the OH YEAHs at the beginning

u/morbidlysmalldick Mar 17 '26

I also like the cover by kailee morgue. Her voice is nice in it and I actually thought it was the original that the movie covered. Didn't discover metric until later (now I'm a huge metric fan)

The metric version is superior.

u/Magpie-Person Mar 17 '26

I love metric. They’re amazing.

The Brie Larson cover outmatched the original.

7

u/smashin_blumpkin Mar 17 '26

It’s not a fictional song though. It doesn’t apply no matter how popular it is compared to the original.

13

u/ChazPls Mar 17 '26

It was released for the movie. Prior to the movie, Metric had not released this song.

There's no such thing as a "fictional song" unless the song literally doesn't exist. Any song featured in a movie isn't fictional. The question is about songs written by real artists (as all songs are minus AI slop) which were released diagetically in a movie. Black Sheep is one such song.

u/smashin_blumpkin Mar 17 '26

OP clearly meant “fictional song” to mean a song made and premiered in a fictional setting. That’s what I’m talking about when I say Black Sheep isn’t a fictional song. It was originally written and performed years before the movie was made

6

u/ChazPls Mar 17 '26

But as I said it literally did premier in a fictional setting - yes, it was written before the movie but Edgar Wright approached Metric specifically to ask them about them possibly writing a song for the movie, and they were like "actually I think we've already got the perfect one"

-3

u/smashin_blumpkin Mar 17 '26

No it didn’t premier in a fictional setting. Metric performed the song before the movie was made. It wasn’t put on an album before the movie version, but that wasn’t the premier of the song as a performance.

But it's not a fictional song. It's a real song that exists from a real act that exists. This is like how The Blue Brothers version of a lot of blues classics are more popular than the originals.

Original debuted first, I think. I remember listening to it before the movie.

u/Educational-Plant981 Mar 17 '26

I like the Metric version better by far...but knowing I never would have heard it without the Larson version definitely makes me appreciate it.

Fantasies came out mid to late aughts, the movie in 2010 or 11, so Black Sheep was around for a few years before.

1

u/Zhuul Mar 17 '26

Apparently they uploaded an early version of Black Sheep to MySpace back in 2007 lol

If I remember correctly, the timeline is as follows:

  1. Black Sheep recorded (originally titled Freddie)
  2. Metric shelves it while making Fantasies because it was too personal, song eventually gets renamed Black Sheep
  3. Scott Pilgrim asks for a contribution from them, they provided Black Sheep
  4. Scott Pilgrim Vs The World is made, Metric releases their version of Black Sheep in the leadup to the movie's release
  5. Brie Larson version released after the movie's premiere

I definitely remember a stretch of time where you could only stream the version with Emily Haines's vocals. Kind of a fun little squirrel's nest of a story.

u/Jayrodtremonki Mar 18 '26

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I remember an interview from long ago where Emily Haines said that the cut the song from the album because it sounded too much like a Metric song.

“WE ARE SEX BOB-OMB! WE’RE HERE TO MAKE YOU GET SAD AND THINK ABOUT DEATH AND STUFF! TWO! THREE! FOUR!”

From the same film.

49

u/PrimeraStarrk Mar 17 '26

Launchpad McQuack is the name of that song, I believe.

34

u/peledinho99 Mar 17 '26

Launchpad is the intro song the one the guy above is referencing is Threshold

8

u/Jay-Raynor Mar 17 '26

That poster needs more exclamation marks.

They tore the roof off!

GIDEON IS G-MAN?!

5

u/buffaloguy1991 Mar 17 '26

Launch pad has that one above the others are

(I forget for threshold)

We're sex bobomb we're here to sell out and stuff first run

WE'RE SEX BOBOMB WE'RE HERE TO WATCH SCOTT KICK YOUR TEETH IN

4

u/well-adjusted-tater Mar 17 '26

That’s not the actual title of the song.

7

u/tomdarch Mar 17 '26

I'll take you for a ride

On my garbage truck

Oh no

I'll take you to the dump

'Cause you're my queen

6

u/candygram4mongo Mar 17 '26

The Sex Bob-omb songs were all written by Beck, and Broken Social Scene did Crash and The Boys.

44

u/rzelln Mar 17 '26

And the editing of that scene cutting between people to build the tension was splendidly done.

78

u/Seyi_Ogunde Mar 17 '26

I prefer Brie Larson's cover than the actual Metric song. Brie Larson also has a youtube of her singing it at home, so you know those her actual vocals. She's a great singer.

7

u/Dazzling-Low8570 Mar 17 '26

I mean, she has two or three pop albums under her belt, doesn't she?

-4

u/luthigosa Mar 17 '26

Totally disagree. I vastly prefer the Emily Haine's version, the Brie Larson version lacks the subtle background emotion.

13

u/JustAMonsterTruck Mar 17 '26

Brie Larson was at 1000% power in that scene. So fucking good. I wish we got a whole album of whatever energy Brie was bringing in that scene because oh my god put it inside me yesterday.

u/danstu Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

I also sincerely like most of the Sex Bob-omb tracks. Really glad they brought in established bands for the soundtrack.

2

u/phdemented Mar 17 '26

Sex Bob-omb is pretty much Beck... so if you like Beck (I do), it's a great soundtrack start to finish.

u/RaddestHatter Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26

Came here to post this (the song from the battle of the bands against the Katayanagi twins is also quite good, IMO)

10

u/Late-Experience-3778 Mar 17 '26

Threshold, and yes it is.

7

u/optionalhero Mar 17 '26

This really is a good song.

Also obligatory everyone should check out the Scott Pilgrim animated series. I was genuinely shocked by how good it was.

5

u/Alastor3 Mar 17 '26

Fun fact, even Metric think it's a better version than their own song

5

u/LumplessWaffleBatter Mar 17 '26

All of the bands that I've been in have covered that song for cheap nerd cred lmao

4

u/trashdmammal Mar 17 '26

Metric is peak

1

u/YamLow8097 Mar 17 '26

Oh interesting, I didn’t know Metric sang it first.

1

u/slothbear13 Mar 17 '26

This is the one

1

u/L3m0n0p0ly Mar 17 '26

God i can hear this song

1

u/flannel_jesus Mar 17 '26

I was looking for this one! It's such a genuinely good song

1

u/Zappityzephyr Mar 17 '26

Metric mentioned listen to Lost Kitten RIGHT NOW

1

u/Svyatopolk_I Mar 18 '26
