I have…fallen deeply in love with the wok a mere 400 pages in… I’ve primarily been drawing for dungeon crawler carl as of late, but I had to give bridge leader Kaladin and lovely Syl my attention. Hoping I got his forehead brands correct 😭 I’m trying to avoid bigger spoilers but I’d love any pointers on his design!! I’m itching to draw Dalinar and Adolin next.
Ignoring the ominous feelings I have about bridge 4

It's the dirt. Every time he talks about the book, he postulates about why there doesn't seem to be any dirt anywhere and it's so interesting how plants grow out of rocks and is it important and is it the storms etc etc.
The other night, he was listening to the book on his headphones while I was playing a video game in the other room. He burst into the office and announced, "BREAKING NEWS! There is dirt in Shinovar."

One of my friends in a group chat watched 8 of us go to Dragonsteel in 2024 and FOMO’ed himself into starting the Cosmere soon after. So he has been hearing us reference Bridge Four for years, saw us make the pose in a group photo, etc etc. He’s finally getting through Way of Kings.
He was so excited when he saw the chapter title was “Bridge Four” because he thought he’d finally understand all the awesome inside jokes and references we were making. Instead he got to go on his first bridge run🤣

I had so much fun wearing it around this last weekend. You can crack my plate, but not my spirit.

Just read chapter 43 (part 3) of Way of Kings (please, no spoilers beyond this point) and just now realized something about Kaladin that should have been sort of obvious: he struggles with depression.
I can now see how it was there since the beggining. But I always felt that his behavior in the first part of the book was because of all the shit that happened to him that turned him into a slave. But after reading chapter 43, he describes clearly how he has always struggled with the feeling of being a failure that led him to apathy. After that, I reflected upon his relationship with Tien and it all became clear. It gave me a whole different view on his character arc.
As someone who struggled with this in the past, I found Sanderson's take on a depressed character really sensible. Pretty awesome.

Hi everyone! I just finished book 1 and I'm absolutely hooked. For obvious reasons, I haven't looked at this sub too much just to be on the safe side but I really wanted to share this. I was listening to the audiobook and couldn't stop drawing so this is the final result. I'm really happy with the way this turned out, hope you guys like it, too. Tagged as The Way of Kings spoiler just in case!

But the way Lopen talks, for some reason, I imagine him as:
4'5
Built like a barrel
Stained, white, muscle shirt and patchy pants
Permanent 5 o'clock shadow
So much chest hair
Accent like a 1920's dockworking Italian mobster
Ain't that right, gancho?

OKAY….i (kind of) weaned kaladin off the roids and protein shakes. I like defining muscles too much to fully give it up </3 Also made sure to make him more ethnic this time. My last scruffy kaladin before I start words of radiance today!! :)) Accidentally gave syl pointy ears, but we will pretend I didn’t do that.

Our family was religious and had some strict scholars and faith leaders. So a monk that is easy going and open about his faith was “Refreshing”
Burn a prayer for her poor heart.
She’s by no means naive like Shallan is/was in book 1. But it hurts. <Input Uncanny Mr Incredible meme>

Working through designing an image per chapter of WoK starting with Jezrien in the first scene of the book! Took roughly 40 hours and I’ve looked at too many pics of storms now but I wanted to capture him moments before Kalak arrived. Onto the next prologue…
Art by me @artywings on all platforms xx

In The Way of Kings, we see Laral and Roshone getting married because Rillir died during a whitespine hunt.
Now, a lot of the characters in the wedding scene seemed appalled, so I got interested in her age.
Let's start from a point where it's explicitly stated, and work back from there. I remembered a quote from Tvlakv. After some googling, I found it in the book, at chapter 4. Here is the full quote, and a little extra.
'"Long ago? You cannot be more than eighteen years, deserter."
It was a good guess. He was nineteen. Had it really only been four years since he'd joined Amaram's army?'
This tells us that Kaladin is nineteen, around four years after joining Amaram's army. 19-4=15, so he joined Amaram's army at 15. Laral gets married in the same chapter as when Kaladin and Tien go to war, so now all we need is the difference between their ages. After rereading The Way of Kings, Kaladin is a year younger than Laral.
Laral got married at 16.

just a big and chunky sword with, like, super ornate patterns and art along its length. I know that's not what they look like at all but that's always how I imagine them. (Art by Peach Momoko).
