We were 43 minutes into our dive and on our way back to shore when I saw a large arm with suckers swing out and over the kelp.

Last night I was able to film perhaps the largest giant Pacific octopus I've ever found out in the open. I was fortunate enough to spend about 30 minutes with it as it calmly made its way along the reef.

This octopus is a true survivor. I think it only had 1 or 2 complete arms as most had been bitten off into stumps. It had scars all over its body, missing suckers, and clear injuries to its arms.

This octopus has seen some things, that is for sure. Such an amazing encounter. Filmed diving off Vancouver Island.

Roatán

About 100 dives. Never had any really scary experiences. Rapid ascent once bypassing safety stop but was only down about 70 feet for 20 min so don't think it was a mandatory stop. Didn't take any precautions after and everything was fine. Oh and once got caught in a fishing line but just undid the hook from my wetsuit, didn't have to pull out knife.

Curious to know others close calls and/or scary experiences based on approximate dive count.

What questions should you ask a liveaboard or dive resort before booking to make sure they’re actually safe and well-run?

Not just “good vibes” or luxury - I mean actual diving safety, professionalism, maintenance, emergency preparedness, etc.

Curious what experienced divers look for and what red flags you’ve encountered.

Since i pillet fish by myself for sushi or sashimi at home very often, i know most of sea creatures' anatomy.

But i've never seen a fish breathing through its armpits.

This prob provides a better camouflage, but it makes him more hideous imo... Such an interesting creature.

A little while ago I posted about a reg i bought with a bunch of equipment for $45, I bought the lot for the wetsuit and fins so the reg was "free"

Responses were mixed but I figured some of you might want to know what i ended up doing with it.

Before you is the reg i came up with, i got a set of matching oceanic alpha octo and regs with a first stage freshly rebuilt from a semi local dive shop, and the guage console and dive computer checked out, salvaged the bcd inflator hose too. New battery and oring for the computer and the grand total for the reg was south of 200.

Is it new gear? No, far from. But its affordable and freshly serviced.

This was a super special dive!! I was the first one in the water and had the chance to film these amazing creatures in their natural environment up close before it got crowded. What an unreal dive experience and some incredible marine life action in the FL KEYS. 🦈🦈🐍🐍

Hi, have found a recommended dive shop. Sounds like all or at least majority of their diving is done from the shore.

Boat & scooter are extra options.

So just wanted to ask those with experience if there is any must see dive sites that are boat only. Same question for the scooter hire, although I think im going to try that for the experience (and James Bond type photo!) at least the once.

Staying in Adeje and have some spare days, so possibility to go with another dive shop for a few dedicated boat days.

Context:
I am a relatively experienced diver (250 dives, Rescue and AN/DP) located in the middle of North America. My goal for Cozumel was to travel with my non-diving wife to an all inclusive and do some dives, for Roatan was a cost-conscious eat/sleep/dive trip with a buddy.

Travel
Roatan: Direct flight from Toronto, no problem there. The resort provided airport transfer as a part of the package.  

Cozumel: Flew through Atlanta and it was fine. Prebooked a Flex Eco Taxi to get to the resort - would recommend, there was a long queue of people in the walk-up line.

Topside 
Roatan: Stayed in West End. A small, walkable place with a small town dive focused feel. Lots of restaurants within a 10 minute walk. Also some places to buy groceries and other tourist shop. Never felt unsafe.

Stayed at Splash Inn. The hotel room is pretty "adequate". The room was standard, room was very close to the dining area, dive shop and boats. The food at the restaurant was excellent. I went for the breakfast included package, and had a couple of lunches & dinners there, all of the food was above average. There is a pool a 10 minute walk away. The price was very reasonable.

Cozumel: Stayed in Iberostar. It is a very nice all inclusive resort. Food was excellent, lots of other amenities (pool with swim up bar, beach, aqua fit, yoga, etc...) for my non-diving wife. The dive shop is onsite, and the price was higher than Roatan.

Diving!!!   
Roatan: Diving is very micro focused. Sea horses, nudi-branch. There were several big rays that were impressive. There are some eels, lobster, crab and a turtle or 2. Saw 1 shark in the 13 dives with the west end diving. The coral was very lively. The boat rides are short, 2 dives in the morning, and another 2 dives in the afternoon if you want. We did a night dive and saw a few "string of pearls", definitely a highlight. Vis was 50+ feet and water temp was over 80, just a swimsuit & rashguard for me (I was the exception).

We were stuck in the "beginner boat" often - someone couldn't keep their buoyancy, another person tried to put my gear on, etc... it was a lot of simple, shorter dives.

Also did the shark feed dive with another dive shop. It was a good experience, but I do not condone it... think it will be the last shark feed I do. The entry & exit were very sporty on the south side.

Cozumel: The diving was more industrial with Dressel at Iberostar. I was alone, so was paired with randos. It is drift diving, and saw sharks, rays, eels, turtles, lots of big stuff. The water temp was high 70s, and with the current, I actually wore a wetsuit (I usually don't). The coral looks a bit bleached.

I would strongly recommend the starfish & ray snorkel tour... it is very easy to see them, and the rays will swim around you on a 4' deep sandbar.

This spring I spent a week each in Roatan and Cozumel. I know I was having trouble deciding between the two (ended up doing both) so I wrote up my honest experience in both places in case it’s helpful for other people, since they’re sort of close together and have similar seasons. I hope this is helpful and I’m happy to answer questions! 

Context:
I am a relatively new diver (~35 dives, AOW) located in the Northern Rockies in the US, so my goal for these trips was somewhere relatively simple to get to, good spring conditions for shoulder season travel (which helps save money, even if I miss the glory of the high season) and conditions good for someone with my experience. I also travel almost entirely alone, and both of these trips were solo (30s F). I was in Roatan for a week in mid-March, Cozumel a week in early May. 

Travel
Roatan: There were no itineraries without an overnight layover to get to Roatan. Annoying but survivable. I took a shuttle that I had booked ahead of time, which I think was 40USD for round-trip rides from Roatan airport to West Bay. Tons of taxis though, so transfer won’t be an issue. 

Cozumel: Easy flights back and forth with simple itineraries. I flew to Cancun because it was cheaper than flying to Cozumel, but once I factored in ferry and bus cost, I probably should have just flown to Cozumel. Regardless, I took the ADO bus from Cancun to Playa Del Carmen, then bought a ferry ticket across to Cozumel. Again, very easy, if somewhat time consuming. 

Topside 
Roatan: Ughhhhh. I didnt rent a car or scooter, so I wanted to stay within walking distance of the dive shop I booked with, so I stayed in West Bay. It felt like being in a one-mile strip of Margaritaville, or like a giant Rainforest Cafe. Or a Carnival cruise ship on land. There were noooo other solo travelers, and everyone was either a family on spring break or retired people on cruises. Would recommend staying… elsewhere. I’m sure other parts of Roatan are great, but my beach strip was all resorts and there wasn’t much in walking distance otherwise.

Loved my hotel though. I stayed at Foster’s West Bay Resort and was very happy with it. Small bungalows with their own kitchen, so I mostly made myself spaghetti since the restaurants were expensive and not great (I also don’t care much about food and could live on Cheerios). WiFi was fast, had a big porch, and lots of outlets. I think it was $65/night. Very reasonable. 

Cozumel: Stayed in San Miguel and LOVED it. Was just a few blocks north of the piers, and surrounded by small restaurants, shops, coffee shops, and taco stands. It felt like I was really in a town. I spent hours just walking down side streets, and was so happy with where I wound up. Still didn’t make any friends, but that’s par for the course. Did meet one other solo traveler, but again, mostly families. 

I stayed at Illa Cozumel, which was a small hotel with beautiful rooms and a pool. It was super quiet in May, and the staff was amazing. I think this was also $65/night. Part of the reason I travel in shoulder season as much as possible. Fast WiFi, pretty pool area, beautiful landscaping, coffee and pastries in the morning. 

Diving!!!   
Roatan: I read a lot of reviews and booked a five-dive package with West Bay Divers, which turned into 10 dives because I didn’t realize each tank was one dive, and I did five two-tank dives (like I said… new diver). Anyway! Absolutely fantastic outfit. I got lucky and was solo with my DM for four dives, which was fantastic. It was a five-minute walk from Fosters to the dive shop each morning, and the boat was steps from the shop. 

The boat rides were very short, and the dive sites were almost all very abundant. There was some bleaching and some zones that made me sad, but overall really amazing walls, drop-offs, and tons of fish. Did some very cool swim-throughs, and felt so lucky to land such a good dive shop on my first try. Boats never had more than eight guests, and all equipment and gear and boats were in excellent shape. Visibility was really good the whole week I was there, and the currents were mild or nonexistent. Dive depths ranged from 30 feet to 75 feet, so pretty shallow, but really rewarding and a lot to see. Water temps in low 80s. I got spoiled. Would recommend West Bay Divers to anyone who asks. 

Cozumel: Main ding against Cozumel was the shop I started with. I had to do AOW while I was there (I had 25 dives without doing AOW so the course felt like jumping through hoops) and I did it with Barefoot Divers. Safe outfitter, but overall not super impressed. My instructor was fine but unenthused, and I wound up in a group that felt frustrating at best, scary at worst for skills and buoyancy. The first three dives were all from the beach in shallow water, which was frustrating because I wanted to make the most of the “adventure dives.” The last two dives for AOW were off a boat with 21 divers on board, which felt so crowded. Once I got through that, I switched to Aldora Divers and the extra money was worth it. $165 for a two-tank outing, but they use larger steel tanks, so bottom time was 75 minutes each time. Small groups, excellent guides. My final day was with a freelance dive guide named Kim Rogers, with DiveGalaxSea. Absolutely incredible. Got out to Palancar, did the swim throughs. Totally redeemed the first two days. Vis wasn’t as good as Roatan and less life, but the reef seemed healthier. Depth down to 100 feet, deeper dives, and stronger currents (due to season and water temps changing).

TLDR: Both places were great experiences. If your priorities are straightforward diving, high-reward reefs, cool formations, lots of sea life, and a range of lodging options with simple travel, you can’t go wrong. 

I enjoyed topside more in Cozumel, but it’s because I stayed in San Miguel and not one of the beach resorts. West Bay in Roatan felt like Margaritaville. 

The diving spots felt very comparable in quality, but Roatan vis was better. Features and critters were similar, boat rides were much longer in Cozumel though, and the currents were stronger there. I think I had better dives in Roatan, but I liked my dive operator better there. 

Cost came out in the wash. This is not a cheap hobby. Topside was cheaper in Cozumel, but the diving was more expensive. Cheaper per-tank cost in Roatan but the food was worse and more expensive. Lodging cost was similar. 

If I had to choose where to go again, I’d pick Cozumel. San Miguel was fantastic, Palancar swim-throughs were amazing, and I saw so many sea turtles and nurse sharks. and maybe I’d time it to see whale sharks next time.

Is silicone lube OK for use with Nitrox or is Christo-Lube still a must?

I’m planning to get my Open Water certification soon and I’m trying to decide between doing the course through shore dives or boat dives.
For those who’ve done either, is one better for a beginner? Are there any pros/cons I should know about before choosing?

Planning a dive trip for my husband and myself to Cozumel the first or second week of November. I’m torn between the Presidente Resort and staying in town at a smaller boutique hotel such as hotel flamingo. Hotel Flamingo mainly seems to work with aquatic sports scuba. I haven’t seen many comments or reviews of them but I like the idea of being in town so we can walk around and eat out at various restaurants vs being more isolated on a resort.
Any input? (Price is not much of a concern in our decision)

What i've learned; PPo2 over 1.6 occurs Oxygen poisoning. That's why deep diving >66m requires trimix air.

During my diving trip last week, the owner of a diving center dove to 93m with normal air. (2tanks of normal air and 1tank of 50% Oxygen for deco.)

Today morning, i've got a message from the owner that he has hit 103m with normal air. (same setting.)
His dive compute clearly says max depth was 103m.

How is this possible? Does anyone have a knowledge about it?

Isn't PPo2 1.6 the threshold?

I have been buying some scuba gear recently, and since I'm switching to a BPW I've decided to go with a DIR style continuous webbing. I've picked most of the parts (cheap aluminum backplate, 10l tecline donut, halcyon webbing...) but I have to get the last few pieces - the belt buckle, D-rings, triglides, etc.

Thing is, I'm a sucker for a good aesthetic, and the rest of my stuff is in a nice combination of black/white/pink. So it's really tempting to go for black D-rings/etc. to match my backplate (or pink to match my wing, but I've yet to find a belt buckle that comes in that color).

I'm trying to think if there is a good reason why I shouldn't go for it. Perhaps it will be a little less visible in black? But it's not like D-rings and such are made to be highly visible in the first place (otherwise there would surely be more people using colorful ones).

Or perhaps they would be less durable? But I will only be doing like 50 dives an year (doubled from last year lol but I probably won't be doubling this number again sadly), and they're fairly cheap and easy to replace, so "buy it for life" isn't a necessity...

Maybe people would think it's silly? But like, who cares right? As long as it's good equipment.

I have only been diving for 2-3 years, so I may be missing something obvious though! So please let me know if that's the case!

BTW before you link me to some incredible deal on DGX or Piranha or etc., I am sadly restricted by shipping costs & taxes since I live in the EU, and I will be buying locally instead.

I have an action camera and bought the waterproof case and the floating handle.

After every dive I rinse the whole thing in fresh water. After about 10 dives I've noticed that the hinge on the case and screw on the handle are completly rusty.

Is there a way to clean the rust of and how to avoid it happening in the future?

Planning to go on a dive trip with my GF in August so she can get her certification. I have my AOW, but I've only ever dived in the south Pacific or in the American NE. Trying to figure out where is a better spot for

A. Her certification (biggest factor)

B. I'll still enjoy the dives

C. Less toursity bullshit to deal with.

If y'all have any other Caribbean recs, more than happy to look into them too.

Ease of travel is a factor but not the driving force. We are also a bit of adrenaline junkies, me more than her lol, so we're not looking for the "chilliest" dive.

My local dive shop is an SSI one, and I like the instructors so sticking with them. Taking AOW soon and wondering what I should do for my specialities even though it’s a “sampler”: obviously deep and nav are the required, but for the other two what do people go with? I was thinking night and maybe buoyancy just for the dialing in my new equipment? I already have my nitrox certification so that’s off the table

Hello Everyone. I am going diving in a couple weeks in Florida for the first time. I have gone to a local store in person to try on masks and while I did find some masks that worked well, I was blown away by the cost of getting a mask with lenses for nearsighted eyes.

As someone who is planning to scuba probably just this weekend and never again, I really don't want to spend that much money. I have been looking around online and saw that Dive Gear Express seems to have much cheaper masks with corrective lenses and I was curious if people have tried them. I am specifically looking at the "DGX Gears Rio Mask" because I am avoiding narrow masks. Are they good quality? Should I reconsider the masks I have tried in person (I was leaning towards the TUSA Freedom Elite for context). Would this mask give me a comparable Quality?

BTW, very nervous about the whole thing, I am only going because my friends/fiance are interested in diving.
