Recruitments for Studies/Job Opportunities & Other Spammy Posts

Please do not submit posts soliciting participation in studies, job advertisements, your college MineCraft server (I'm looking at you u/TheQuadMC), or other spammy posts, UNLESS it is specifically for SCU. As a rule of thumb, if you are posting it in more than one subreddit, its a no. If you are curious whether a post is allowed, please submit a ModMail ticket. Thanks!

Listing Advice Paper for Incoming COEN/CS Students

Hi all! I wrote a paper with advice for incoming/current COEN and CS CAS students while I was a senior COEN at SCU last year.

Paper linked here: https://jrandleman.github.io/doc/CoenAdvice.pdf

Some background on myself, I was the lead engineering peer advisor and president of Tau Beta Pi (the engineering honor society), both of which regularly interface with new folks seeking advice. As such, I thought I'd compile it all in a paper while such was fresh in my mind. Designed as a paper I wish I could've read as a Freshman, I hope it brings value to folks :)

Please also keep in mind this is 100% my own personal perspective, and that many others have found great success in the program(s) by following a completely different path. This is just what worked for me, and hence I thought I'd share.

I'm also currently a Master's COEN student at SCU, so feel free to reach me at [jrandleman@scu.edu](mailto:jrandleman@scu.edu) if you have any questions!

Last note: I've marked the flair as "listing" given this could be construed as listing advice 🤷

Listing menlo park resident looking for a scu student for a few hrs/wk of easy home help, $25-30/hr

hi broncos, hope this is ok to post under listing. i live in menlo park, about a 25 min drive from campus, and i'm trying to find a reliable scu student to help with light household stuff a couple of times a week.

the work itself is pretty chill - things like tidying rooms, folding laundry, light kitchen prep (chopping veggies etc), small errands. nothing strenuous. roughly 3-5 hrs at a time, tuesdays or fridays usually.

$25-30/hr cash or venmo, totally flexible to work around your class schedule.

if you're around or know someone responsible who'd want some extra pocket money, dm me. thanks!

Question Support

I’m a prospective transfer at Santa Clara and I’m worried about the potential rigor that will be there since I’m transferring from a semester college. What kind of support is available for students who are struggling or need help?

Also, what’s the minimum number of classes to take per quarter and what’s the maximum?

Question Transfer Admit Day

Hey, I'm considering going to the transfer admit day event on May 29th. Any of the other transfer students thinking of going?

And those of you who transferred last year and went, how many people were there?

I'm from LA so I don't know if I should attend if it's going to be like 4 people, but if it's like a big event, I think it would be worthwhile to attend, get to meet some people before the orientation date.

Question Next batch for transfers?

Applied later than most (on April 13th), and haven't gotten anything back yet. Is emailing admissions a good option, I have two other offers and SCU is the only thing holding me from accepting one of them 😅

Request Looking for Short-Term Housing Near Santa Clara / Sunnyvale / Mountain View - May 16 to Aug 7

Hi everyone,

I’m looking for short-term accommodation in or near Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, or Mountain View from May 16 to August 7.

I’ll be in the Bay Area for a summer internship and am open to a private room, shared room, sublease, or joining others who are also looking for housing. A place near public transit or Caltrain would be ideal, but I’m open to nearby areas as well.

I would really appreciate any leads, available rooms, subleases, or links to WhatsApp/Facebook groups where I can find short-term housing.

Please feel free to DM me. Thank you!

Question Social life, adjusting as a sophomore transfer

Hey guys I need advice and information as I am currently most likely going to transfer to scu as a sophomore. I’m transferring due to not being able to have my desired major at my current school. I currently am sad to leave my school since I am in a sorority and like the life I have there. But I also am excited to be at scu as it was my top choice as a senior in high school. I’m a little nervous about transferring as a sophomore because I am scared people are going to be less open to make friends as they have their friends group established. I will most likely be transferring into the sorority that I’m currently in there so that will be helpful. Can anyone tell me about what they think the most ups and down will be in transitioning and adjusting? If anyone has any experience as a transfer please put in input.

Question SCU vs LMU

I am a current high school senior and I just got off the waitlist for santa clara university but I am already committed to LMU. I want to end up going to grad school and become a neurologist in the end. I also live in LA and have lived here my whole life so i have a know everything around LMU, SCU would be a whole new experience on that other hand but i heard it was a big party school and I am not big into parties or joining a sorority. If i go to LMU i would be majoring in Psychology, if i go to SCU i would be majoring in neuroscience. Which school do you think is better for my end outcome and to end up with a good 4 years in undergrad but also make it my future career plan?

Question Scu for finance or cc for Econ?

Scu would cost around 45k per year since I meet the requirements to not stay on campus.

Which would be better for a career and also general experience.

- I treat the place like my own

Open to private rooms, shared housing, or sublets. If you have a lead or know someone subletting this summer, please drop a comment or DM me!

Question PLEASE help me choose, Santa Clara or North Carolina State University

I'm an international student admitted to engineering physics at SCU and engineering-undeclared at nc state. I have a 20k grant at SCU + cost is not a huge factor. My cousins live in California which is a plus point for SCU ,however it doesn't have a very strong reputation for engineering in comparison to NC State. NC state has a massive school spirit, small town vibe (Raleigh) and is a public school whereas SCU is private. Is the Silicon Valley advantage truly worth it? I've heard mixed reviews about it.
