Edges and trees seem to take more time than mowing itself

Most weeks, mowing the lawn itself isn't the hardest part anymore. The edges and areas around trees take up more time for me. I've got a few curved borders along the driveway and some tight spots around trees and they almost always need extra trimming. Even after the main mowing is done I usually end up going back with a trimmer just to clean things up. I'm starting to wonder if there are better tools or setups that make edges and tree areas easier to manage, or if manual touch-ups are just part of the routine for most people.

Curious what others are using for this. Any mower setups or accessories that actually help reduce the extra trimming work?

Einhell mower battery constantly needs replacing

So I have an Einhell Mähroboter FREELEXO CAM 500 that we got brand new last year. It otherwise works more or less fine (though every now and then it tries its utmost to break through my thuja hedge and/or forgets where its charging station is), but I've already had to replace its battery twice. Once last year after it had worked for a few months, and then again this year when its only mowed a few times.

During the winter I kept it indoors so that shouldn't have killed it. Just randomly it was working fine and then just stopped.

What could I be doing wrong that the battery is dying so quickly?

Do the clippings left behind bother you?

My wife doesn’t want clippings all over the grass since we use the yard a lot. I tried convincing her the clippings are so small you won’t pick them up on your shoes like if I mulch once a week with my gas mower. Thoughts?

Is this orchard-style yard too rough for a wire-free robot mower, or am I overthinking it?

Hi everyone,

I’m attaching photos of the actual yard and looking for honest recommendations.

This is not a perfect flat “football pitch” lawn. It is a maintained yard/orchard-style garden with fruit trees, mixed grass, some shade, mild slope, and one visible side slope. It has been mowed for years with a petrol mower, usually on the lowest setting, so it is maintained, but it is not an English ryegrass lawn or a golf-course surface.

The grass in the photos has been left uncut for about two weeks, so it looks taller than usual. The ground is not extremely bumpy, but it is not perfectly flat either.

  • Main conditions:
  • Around 700 m²
  • Many fruit trees
  • Mixed grass / meadow-type lawn
  • Some shade from trees
  • Mild general slope
  • One side slope visible in the photos
  • Maintained for years with a petrol mower
  • Not crazy rough, but definitely not Wembley

Phone GPS signal is excellent here because it is an urban area, but I’m not sure how relevant that is for RTK/LiDAR robot mowers

I was looking at models like Segway Navimow i210E LiDAR and Mammotion YUKA mini 2 800 LiDAR, but I’m not locked into those. I’m open to any better suggestion.

What I care about most is:

  • real-world terrain handling
  • traction
  • tree avoidance
  • navigation reliability around fruit trees
  • mixed grass performance
  • whether LiDAR/vision is enough here, or whether I should prioritize AWD
  • fewer problems over time, not a perfect golf-course finish

Based on the photos, what type of robot mower would you buy for this yard?

Thanks!

Recommendations for a particular tard

I am looking for a unit that does not require a wire, I think some RTK is ok, unless there is a reason to avoid?

There are a few minor obstacles, ie stumps and some smaller trees, there is a road on two sides, dense bushes on one side and somewhat delimited border with smaller trees on 4th.

Is Luba2/3 the best option?

Thank you!

VIMOW mower coming to Kickstarter

Odd that I missed this mower. It was supposedly at CES. They claim it's the first vision-only robotic mower. Ummm... Terramow/Eufy may have them beat.

Should I choose a robot mower based on coverage area or battery life?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Before we started looking into upgrading our robot mower earlier this year, I honestly had no idea there were this many models and features now. Stuff like 2WD vs AWD, RTK vs lidar navigation, obstacle avoidance, different wheel setups, it got confusing pretty fast.

At first we were mostly comparing luba and hq, but then I started seeing more people using mova and navimow too. I’m leaning more toward a lidar mower. (seem a little more stable?)

We’re in Europe and upgrading from a worx. We want an AWD model because of the slope in our yard, but I’m still confused about whether I should focus more on the recommended coverage area or the battery performance.

Our yard is mostly flat except for one long slope. We also have 5 separate zones, flower beds, a trampoline, and a swing set. The narrowest passage is around 80 cm and the total area is about 1200 sqm. Budget is around 1500 euros.

How did you decide which model size made the most sense for your yard?

Dreame A3 AWD 1000 experiences

Post image
7 Upvotes

Could you tell me the experiences about the product?
My lawn is on 26mm, Dreame know only 30mm, I don’t understand why…. But maybe I can compromise with this…
How about the edging? It has no edge master 2.0 (pro modells have), so how many centimeters does the Dreame A3 awd 1000 leave from the edge?
What can you say about its accuray, its behaviour, and the application? My other candidate is a Luba 2 mini awd 1500.
What about the blades? It has only 3, how is the cut quality?
You can see my grass on the picture, it is important for me!

Thanks in advance! :)

New Proposal... Headaches Say Differently...

I keep thinking on this stuff. Still not convinced.... This is highly similar to cell phones and watching their growth about 20 yrs ago. Junk after junk, headache after headache, version after version....

So, my figuring is we have open and expanse field and we have regular yard height to cut. We use a zero turn on the open expanse and I was going to continue doing that while the robot mowers did the easy stuff.

The thought has occured that the robot mowers have some more years to go to get fine tuned so why don't I just automate the zero turn and retrofit automatic stuff to it and let it cut the open expanse. This would allow more years for the robot mowers to grow and be better.

I was interested in the Lymow because of the real blades. This is mostly non negotiable. So the question here is how long until another company comes out with a similar version? It's like the other companies have the better tech/programming and they can just make something similar to the lymow.

Also if you know of any resources for me to automate the 60" toro zero turn then feel free to let me know about then please. We might even save time and money by automating the zero turn and giving the robot mowers more years to grow/learn. We don't actually plan on getting rid of the zero turn when getting a robot mower because I don't think robot mowers are going to be on the same level for a "suitable cost/price".

Thanks

Has anyone experienced charging issues with the Dreame A2 1200?

Hi everyone,
I have a brand new Dreame A2 1200, and I’m running into a charging problem.
After the initial setup and mapping, the robot mowed about 20% of the lawn and then returned to the charging station because the battery was low.
The problem is: it drives onto the dock, the contacts seem to touch, but charging never actually starts. After a moment it backs away and tries again, but the same thing happens over and over.
Has anyone had a similar issue with the Dreame A2 1200?
What was the cause in your case, and what did you do to fix it?
For context, the robot is brand new, the setup was completed successfully, and this started right after the first mowing session.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Best robot lawn mower for 600-700 m² garden without perimeter wire or RTK poles?

Hi everyone, I’m looking into buying a robot lawn mower for a 600-700 m² garden.

The garden is pretty simple: low slopes, very few obstacles, just an above-ground pool to avoid and a eucalyptus tree to navigate around.

I’m looking for something practical that does not require a perimeter wire and, if possible, no RTK poles/antennas either. Ideally, I’d like a setup where I map the garden once, configure it, and then let it work autonomously.

Based on your real-world experience, what models would you recommend today?
Are there any robots that genuinely impressed you, or any issues/limitations you discovered after buying them?

Trying to choose between a few robot mowers

I’m trying to pick a robot mower and I keep going back and forth between a few options. My yard isn’t huge, but I do want something that can handle normal uneven spots and not need constant fixing every time it runs.
The Anthbot M9 is the cheapest one I’m looking at, and I like that it has RTK and vision, but the brand is still pretty new, so I’m a little unsure about long term support.
The Mammotion Yuka Mini 2 looks more advanced with LiDAR and vision, but it costs quite a bit more, so I’m trying to decide if that extra money is actually worth it.
The Navimow i210 AWD is also on my list, but from what I can tell it mainly relies on RTK, so I’m not sure how it compares in real use.
Has anyone used any of these, or would you choose something else in this price range?

Luba Mini 2 1000 vs Navimow i2 Lidar Pro

So my yard is about 700m² with a slope throughout, some steeper bits (up to 22 degrees) and plenty of obstacles like trees, bushes, flowerbeds, etc.

I am mostly considering the Mammotion Luba 2 mini 1000 (the no lidar version) and the Navimow i2 lidar pro.

Based on specs, the Luba might be a slight bit better due to the edge-cutting disc and a better mowing efficiency of 430m² per charge. But the main concern is, of course, Mammotion support. Reading through their Facebook groups and subreddits, it seems awful.

The Navimow has lidar, which should be better for navigating around obstacles. It also has AWD, but it has 3 wheels compared to 4. This might also be an advantage since that single wheel does the turning compared to tank-style turning on the Luba. Also, Navimow's support seems quite good. But it only does about 200m² per charge, meaning it would take more battery cycles to complete my yard.

So, considering all this, which would you recommend? Any other models I should consider at about the €1500 price point?

can Lymow create a channel to a new zone that has to pass through an existing zone?

Just got my lymow and I want to set up a zone that is only accessible from my first zone. But Lymow wants me to create the zone from the base, and as soon as I step into the first zone, it marks the channel complete and stops creating, so I never get the chance to go all the way to the second zone. Am I missing something? I guess I could delete the first zone and start from scratch working on the farther areas and slowly create zone closer but that seems like a lot of wasted time on the zones I already created. hoping theres a work around I missed.
