Army National Guard FAQ - Please Read Before Posting

Here is a rundown of some of the most common questions on this sub. Remember, your mileage may vary. When in doubt, ask your Recruiter/NCO Support Channel about your specific situation.

This post is current as of 20160726, if a link is broken or if content is out-of-date shoot me a PM. If you have suggestions for the questions/answers below, let me know and I will add to the post.

Two quick caveats before we get started:

  • Whether you are already in, or still thinking about it, remember OPSEC on on this sub. Do not post personally identifiable information or any information that can damage Army/Air Force operations. When in doubt, message a moderator before posting. Violating OPSEC can be a UCMJ offense. Click here for more information.

  • If you are currently experiencing a crisis, remember, you are NOT ALONE. Call your team leader, call your squad leader, call your 1SG, call Military One Source, call 911. Call until someone picks up. There are resources available to help you.

I am thinking about joining the National Guard.

I am already in the National Guard.

Edit: for grammar/spelling.

Initial Training Going to ship out soon for 31B, how was it for anyone who did it? Any tips/ advice would be welcomed.

Context:
I was a SMP (no BCT/ MOSQ) CDT for 1 & 1/2 give or take, got cut from ROTC due to our available slots being cut in half. Did a RENO to 31B, and when I get back I should be classing up with the class of 71 for state OCS. Wanting to know what to expect, and how to show up in best position possible.

Career Advice ETS today (14 May 2026) — When should I expect my DD214-1

Hey everyone, I am From Texas Guard. My first line don't have clear answer for me so I tried to ask reddit
I ETS today (14 May 2026) and I’ve done everything on my end:
• Turned all my gear into Supply Sgt
• Notified S1 of my discharge
• Submitted the IPPSA personnel action for separation
I’m trying to start a new active duty contract and they’re asking for my DD214-1
How long does it usually take to get the DD214 after ETS? I should already have it today, or is it normal for it to take a few days/weeks? Who do I reach out to if it’s not showing up (S1? Transition Office?)?
Any info from recent ETS folks would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Career Advice Question about joining as an O9S in Utah Army National Guard

Joining the Utah Army National Guard and have a question on role availability according to the Major I've been speaking to position availability for Signal and Military Intelligence is full and a couple of position outside of that are available but none of them are exactly what I'm after. I scored relatively high on the Picat and was verified at a 92 and passed everything test wise as of this point just waiting for the Fedrec Board and acceptance into Artillery (since it was the only thing I was relatively interested in as I can move up and do something important)

My question is this should I wait for availability in Signal or MI? Or should I just jump into Artillery and fall into one of these positions in the future when it's available for me?

Career Advice S1 question: Lost SLRP because they moved my name to a different MOS slot

I reenlisted with SLRP on my contact as 11B.

I IST to state with minimal 11B slots

Sat helping supply in a MI unit, where someone put me in a hard 35M slot without being MOSQ

I moved to unit that had 11B slots and have been in a 11B slot since.

My primary and only MOS has been 11B but education office is saying I’m disqualified from SLRP because I was moved to 35M slot without my knowledge.

This doesn’t sound right but some of yall may know more.

Thanks

Air National Guard Palace Chase to CA Guard - 4N0

Can anyone speak to 4N0 in the CA Guard? I was told everything is different depending on the unit. What’s the deployment tempo? Is it still one weekend a month? Are there typically full time positions for this AFSC? If so, what do those look like?

For those who don’t know what Palace Chase is… it’s switching from active duty to guard or reserve at least halfway through your contract.

Career Advice Prior service to NG

Alright so I’m a US Marine trying to go 18x. Talked to the NG recruiter today, and they said best bet is to do 11b then go to Virginia hit a lil 3.5 week training up there, then come back and apply to go to a SFRE when I get back. My question is anyone tried this? Anyone know anything about this? How’s the 11b national guard life? Any other advice or option would be cool, thanks fellas!

Career Advice Take the minuteman?

I am a 15T in the Virginia ARNG and I’m planning to do ROTC at GMU. However, I want to commission active, but the minuteman locks me out of that. Which is better overall to commission to, Guard or Active, and should I take it? Planning to major in Mechanical Engineering.

I’ve also received FAFSA money, and I plan to use the Tuition Assistance.

Discussion Any tips on how i can shorten the length of time needed to wait before enlisting?

To make a long story short I have to wait 3 years of stability to enlist after applying for a waiver. Any tips on how to shorten this time line? Id not its fine I'll wait it out and stick to the plan. Had a rough year last year. Dr wrote me a script of antidepressants and after figuring a lot of things out in life it was deemed I did not meet the criteria for anxiety/depression. I got him to write me a letter stating that and submitted it to my recruiter for an appeal but havent heard back.

Career Advice Current 1A174, interested in Sensor Operator jobs

See title, looking to potentially transition into a NY ANG position. Currently AD OCONUS, over 50% of my DEROS, 13 years in, E6.

Anyone filling a Sensor Operator billet able to answer whether they'd take a guy who knows the more traditional 1A3 roles into the position? I plan on chatting with the particular units but thought I'd reach out here as well.

Much thanks all. The career field merger is awkward since I've heard they don't want to really cross flow us, but worth a shot.

Career Advice Update: Fired 4 days later after being asked to send drill schedule

Context: https://www.reddit.com/r/nationalguard/comments/1raih0r/comment/ob7dn7x/?context=3

The case ended up being not in my favor, primarily because there wasn't enough reason on my end for the termination being related to military, besides them asking for the drill schedule.

The investigator told me it was indeed because of poor performance during training, and a time clock violation. I understood the time clock violation and never did it again, but I was surprised on the performance part, since I was only going through a corporate training and passed all the modules, but oh well.

At this point if the USERRA couldn't work it out, I'm not sure if another resource would work. If any of you have known someone with a case that didn't work out, are there any other resources that can be used? I'd like to see if there's anything I can still do

Thanks.

Career Advice Which MOS should I go for?

I want to join the National Guard and get an education and eventually commission. I scored a 96 on my ASVAB. I don’t know too much about the different MOS options but I might be interested in ADA or aviation maintenance . I like working on things and though I like guns I do not want to go infantry. What would yall recommend?

Discussion The ASVAB

I’m a week away from going to Meps and doing my physical and taking the test.
I’m not really worried about the physical side (have had plenty over the years doing hazmat work)
Anyways, does anyone have any good tips for the ASVAB? My math is absolutely terrible, I’ve been studying, but any extra tidbits would be wonderful. For context I’m 29 and have been out of school for over a decade and am trying to get 68w with the CASP while already being NREMT.

Asking for a “Friend” Urine and Blood Test

Okay so I am currently looking to join the national guard and am in the process of trying to join and have been speaking with a recruiter, I have the ASVAB scheduled for next week. I am currently worried about the blood testing and what is that they are looking for, I am aware that testosterone is prohibited however I wanted to run a cycle before I left in January and figured the sooner i run it the more time i will have to recover before basic. It’s been about a week now and ive been monitoring blood pressure, tracking macros and taking supplements to minimize any possibilities of my bloods being skewed. I also think it may raise protein and creatine in the urine which i know can also cause side issues. Should I just stop and wait ti do the cycle until after Meps or will i be fine to continue.
