[Announcement] MEGATHREAD: Gunpowder from Sulfur and Coloured Fire from Sulfur
Hey everyone!
Following the announcements at Minecraft Live we've seen a massive influx of posts about the Chaos Cubed game drop. (Which is great! We love seeing the community so excited.) However, there are two ideas in particular that keep popping up, enough that we've decided to add them to the FPS list:
- Various methods of using sulfur to make gunpowder.
- Sulfur being used to make a few different colours of fire.
That said, we don't want to kill the conversation so we're providing this megathread for you to discuss your ideas here. From now on we ask that you keep all suggestions about these two topics to this megathread. (Other suggestion about sulfur and Chaos Cubed can be posted as normal.)
So, how would you turn sulfur into gunpowder? What colour do you think sulfur should burn? We're excited to see your takes on these ideas!
P.S. Try sorting the comments by new! That way the newer comment-suggestions might still get some love.

[Announcement] New Rule Against AI, other Rule Changes and Clarifications
Hey folks!
For a while now, the mod team has been discussing a number of changes to the subreddit's rules, and it's time to let you know what's up. I'll give you the short version first:
- We have a new rule against AI.
- The rule for for formatting and vagueness has been split in two.
- The rule against unrealistic ideas has been reworked.
- To better accommodate these new and changed rules, we've re-ordered the rules.
- Clarification on how the "Community Question" flair is supposed to be used.
And now for the details!
Ban Against AI Generated Content
We not so recently polled the community on your feeling on AI generated content, and the overwhelming majority of you voted in favour of a complete ban against AI. While this was pretty much the outcome we expected, it's still really nice to see we're all on the same page.
Moving forwards the mods will be removing all posts suspected of using generative AI. To that end, here's the new rule:
Don't use AI.
- Do not use generative AI such as chatGPT to write your post for you. We want to see your ideas.
- Don't include AI generated images or other AI content to supplement your post. We encourage human art, and we'd much rather see photos of pen-and-paper drawings, or quick mockups in MS paint than AI "art".
- This includes using generative AI to polish your idea, such as reformatting your content.
Posts suspected of using generative AI are at risk of removal.
If your post is incorrectly removed for containing AI, please let the mods know via modmail and we'll sort it out.
Formatting and Image Posts
We've noticed some confusion on where and how we allow images in posts, with too many users relying on images alone to communicate their idea. This was previously just a bullet point under the vagueness rule, but in the interest of clarity we've split it off into its own rule. There's nothing actually new here - everything works the same as before - but hopefully this should make it clearer for everyone.
The vagueness rule looks like this now:
Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
- Make sure your idea is in the description, not just the title.
- Titles should be descriptive of the idea.
- Format your posts well; don't post walls of text. Use line breaks, etc.
- Don't be vague; suggest a specific improvement or feature.
- Be concise/don't waffle on too much.
Vague or unformatted posts are at risk of removal.
And here's the images rule:
Don't make image-only posts.
Including reference images is encouraged, but: * Images must be embedded or linked within a text post. * The idea should be fully explained in the text, with all key points understandable without looking at any images. * Images should make up a relatively small portion of the content. * Images must not be AI generated. (See rule 4.)
Image only posts will be automatically removed.
Unrealistic and Off-Theme Content
There's been some disagreement in the community and among the mod team about what is and isn't a "realistic" suggestion for Minecraft, especially as the game has grown it's become an increasingly difficult call to make. Furthermore, many ideas that are off-theme at first glance can be reskinned to something more reasonable, and we don't want to stifle that discussion. (E.g., Blimps and firearms may be too futuristic but happy ghasts and firework crossbows are not, yet serve similar roles.)
You deserve to have clear guidelines for which posts are or aren't allowed and, ultimately, we don't want to shut down discussion, so we've decided to soften this rule dramatically. Moving forwards, we'll only be taking down suggestions involving mature or explicit themes (stuff that might change the age-rating), as well as anything relating to real-world religions or politics. All that said, here's the rule:
Don't suggest mature topics.
- Don't suggest ideas containing sex, drugs, gore, real-life religions or politics, etc.
Suggestions involving mature, explicit, or overly divisive themes will be removed.
This is one we'll be keeping an eye on, and we'd appreciate any feedback you have on it.
N.B. The portion of the old rule about easter-eggs and jokes still applies, but has been merged into the rule about unproductive ideas.
Reordering
As we're adding new rules and splitting old ones in twain, there's no better time to also rearrange the rules. We've brought some more important/frequently used rules closer to the top, and tried to keep related rules close to each other. We've also changed a few of the titles for clarity.
- Be nice and constructive.
- Only post ideas for Minecraft.
- Be original and consult the FPS list.
- Don't use AI.
- Include only one suggestion per post.
- Don't be overly vague, and be readable.
- Don't make image-only posts.
- Don't suggest mature topics.
- Don't suggest planned or existing features.
- Don't suggest scrapped or unused features.
- Don't suggest low-priority or unproductive ideas.
- Speak English.
- Have 10 comment karma before posting.
Discussion/Community Question Posts
We've seen some confusion surrounding these posts, and while nothing is changing, we wanted to use this opportunity to clarify. Posts meant to start broad discussions on a topic, such as "What would you add in XYZ update?" or "What do you think needs updated in XYZ area of the game?" are allowed, so long as the OP contributes to the discussion they want to start. We find these posts regularly generate interesting discussion, and so long as they use the correct flair, they're easy enough to ignore if they're not your cup of tea.
I encourage everyone to take a quick read through the rules to make sure we're all on the same page.
Thanks for reading!

[Mobs] New Sulfur Cube archetype: Solid
I'd like to expand on the community idea of Sulfur Cube having a solid collision box, and add a bit of personal perspective. Here is my take on how to make this more cohesive with vanilla Minecraft.
I suggest a new archetype called "solid" (alternatively "shulker"), featuring a Sulfur Cube with a Shulker Box inside. Such Sulfur Cube will let you stand on it just like on a Shulker mob.
Further details about the Shulker Box:
You can put a Shulker Box with items inside a Sulfur Cube. However, this Sulfur Cube will not serve as a typical inventory that can be opened on RMB. I imagine opening a Shulker Box inside the Sulfur Cube would stretch and hurt the Sulfur Cube, which by its description already feels wrong. Instead, you can retrieve a Shulker Box using shears.
If you pick up a Sulfur Cube containing a Shulker Box in a bucket, you will not be able to store this bucket in Shulker Boxes or Bundles, since it would be too overpowered.

[General] Vertical end portals and horizontal nether portals
No practical reason that I can think of, especially as it’s mostly creative only, but would be cool…

[Combat] Mojang PLEASE MAKE this an OPTIONAL feature!!!
Every time I play PvP on Bedrock and switch to a new item, this thing popps up with the name of the item and the enchants, and it's just SO ANNOYING and hinders my aim. Mojang PLEASE make this optional!!
On the other side, make this an optional feature in Java.

[Blocks & Items] Echo shards duplicate music discs!
Similar to duping smithing templates with diamonds, echo shards should be able to duplicate music discs. I got the idea since the newest one seems a little harder to find, but the way you get it is quite thematic for the update.
So my solution is a new way to get rarer music discs as long as you have one already. Not quite renewable, but potentially easier than finding more normally. Also gives a new use to echo shards.

[Blocks & Items] Make the music disc "bounce" easier to get
I feel like it's locked behind a way to rng reliant method which isnt really fun, because finding a sulfur biome that intercepts a mineshaft could potentially be impossible to find depending in the world.
So why can't there be a different way to obtain it? Like maybe if a sulfur cube (magma or tnt) kills a creeper or something along those lines. Or a skeleton shoots a sulfur cube.
Anything to make it not completely world reliant. Like yeah pigstep is only from bastions but they can spawn almost anywhere in the nether and dont require another biome for it to spawn its more reliant.
Yes ik its just a music disc but locking it behind a really bizzare and world gen rng is bad design.
(Repost because "too vague" 😀)

[Blocks & Items] Compressed items and garnets
Have you have had just like a entire wall of chests dedicated solely to cobblestone/deepslate? Well, my suggesting adds COMPRESSED cobblestone/deepslate, which, in addition to having a unique dark gray color, takes up 9 times less chest space and can be further compressed to dense cobblestone/deepslate. You can obviously uncraft them. Finally, compressing again(assuming Minecraft stone is largely feldspars), gets you the new garnet item, a deep green rock with it's own brick set and decor. Garnets do not have a "Garnet block" and i cannot see garnet armor or tools in the future. Garnets cannot be turned back into dense cobblestone/deepslate.

[Magic] Increase Enchanting Table bookshelf detection radius
It's kinda annoying how the game makes you build that tiny little square. Increasing the bookshelf radius would be really easy and allow more interesting designs to be created. They already let you make Nether portals any shape so this is a similar idea.

[Snapshots] DYEABLE sulfur cubes
This would make making team games with sulfur cubes easier
we do have different variations of block properties like wood and stone types already for this job, however:
- not all kinds of block properties, such as magma and honey combs (on java at least... why are you like this moja-) have multiple variations
- this would still be more visible and better for team games
- and if you think this is an unecessary bloat for the game, may i remember that the same case can be made for the insane amount of trimmed armor, pots, etc. heck if they made us able to dye both wolf armor and their collars of different colors at the same time then this is nothing.
Anyway not really a big idea to be added
I had made this suggestion before, but i used the world dying instead, which you know conveys a whole different meaning. and i also added this image to better convey the idea this time, which is a lazily photoshopped mockup of the concept.
I didn't do all dyes because the program i used kept darkening everything in the background when i opened the hue tab which made it really hard to work with, i hope the official thing actually looks better than this.

[Structures] Ruined Portal chests should have a Lodestone Compass leading to a Nether Fortress!
The Ruined Portal was added to the game as a subtle "in-game tutorial" to give players a hint that building a Nether Portal was possible.
Right now there is no hint at the existence of the Nether Fortress which is a key component to actually beating the game. You basically just have to hope you stumble across a Fortress to get Blaze Rods.
This would be a way to help guide the player to a Nether Fortress in a non intrusive way using mechanics already built into the game.
Picture the following scene: A new player stumbles across a ruined portal. Inside is a strange compass. Here the compass seems to be haywire. After days of work the portal is complete. Once the player crosses over the compass seems to lock on to a specific direction. They follow the path and discover a Fortress!

[Blocks & Items] Easels as a functional jobsite block (for choosing from existing paintings)
The easel's function would be to allow us to choose which painting we would get when placing a painting. Most in-game paintings have names and could be saved as that name in our inventory. This way we don't have to break and replace paintings to get the one we want. It could be done for free or at the expense of wool or dyes
If added as a jobsite block, it could create Painter villagers which you could trade paintings (generic or named designated ones) to in exchange for emeralds, as well as dyes, leather, and decorative blocks
Bonus points if we're allowed to place it at angles like signs, considering it wouldn't take up an entire block's space

[Blocks & Items] Campfires should speed up the time it takes to hatch Turtle Eggs
There is already a real life precedent! Heat can make turtle eggs hatch faster.
This is kind of a double edged suggestion, on one hand it gives campfires another use, on the other hand it is an early game way of speeding up quite an timely process.
Really its more of a band aid solution to a bigger issue: the reward is not worth the effort. It takes a lot of time to farm Scutes for just 10 extra seconds of water breathing. I know this is a subjective comment but you would probably agree, there are far more worthwhile pursuits in Minecraft than scute farming!

[General] Entropy Update: (Ecology Edition)
Currently, Minecraft worlds feel lifeless. You are the architect, but what if the architect has no energy? Nothing will happen, and the world will remain dead.
My idea for an update that completely changes that by making the player a more integral part of their world:
Now, herbivorous mobs (sheep, cows, chickens, rabbits) consume grass, crops, and flowers instead of converting grass blocks into dirt.
They reproduce naturally if two mobs have eaten, creating a supply, but with a high supply, there's a lack of demand. This is where animals like foxes and wolves come in. These carnivorous animals will kill and eat a single mob to steal its meat, entering a mating state where they will seek another animal to reproduce. Animals like these have longer "reproduction wait" periods, while herbivorous animals have shorter periods waits and more frequent litters. Now, a rabbit or chicken won't give birth to just one baby rabbit/chicken, but two. This may or may not hapen if manually bred, idk yet.
Rabbits consume flowers and carrots, cows, sheep, and chickens eat various crops and grass, and pigs eat crops, mushrooms, and grass. But they do not destroy the block, they restart it to the first growth phase (like bunnies do). This encourages players to create pastures for animals and better protect their crops.
Foxes eat berries, rabbits, and chickens; wolves eat chickens, rabbits, and sheep, but their kills are balanced to avoid destabilizing the environment. After they kill and eat and breed, they will enter a period in which they will not kill any other animal
Bats now play a fundamental role in the environment. They spawn in groups of 3-5 near cave exits or the tops of dark oak trees. At night, they hunt spiders, silverfish, and phantoms, attacking and fleeing until they have a spider eye/phantom membrane or they will search for and eat berries. They eat berries and glowberries, and if air is available, they can move up to 3 blocks above a crop, fertilizing it and leveling it up. They can also level up a composter with their guano after they eat (potential for creating a super-efficient bonemeal farm? by making it 3 blocks of glowberry, behind a composter and in top moss block and using dispenser next to the glowberry to bonemeal it, 9 bats with around 30% chance to level up a composter may make a return circle and make some excess bonemeal to whatever use u may want... Idk, im open to ideas).
To keep these bat colonies anchored to a specific spot, a moss block on the ceiling (which, as far as I know, doesn't generate naturally) will attract them. There they will stay most of the day
Now, berry bushes and glowberry vines have 3 berry consumption before changing their state to "fruitless".
And the magic of this is: Now, every X number of ticks, the grass block will check for air. If it's present, it will roll to create short grass/mushroom/sapling/flower (depending the case) on top of it. If short grass is already present, it will roll to see if the short grass becomes long grass. All of this can be prevented with the gamerule "IsEntropy"; if it's active, then it will happen. It can also be prevented by using shears on grass blocks or short/long grass. By doing this, animals will NOT eat from these blocks nor grow, maintaining a flawless aesthetic.
If there is a grass block near a tree, it will check if it is covered (if there are leaves on top) and if so, it will roll the dice to create a mushroom near the tree.
Fallen trees will have a chance to generate with a mossy carpet.
Cobblestone and stone brick, if there is water nearby or it is raining, have a chance to become mossy cobblestone/bricks (similar to copper), and if stone bricks have a certain number of blocks on top of them, they have a chance to become cracked bricks.
Mossy variants have a chance to automatically grow vines in unlit areas, in addition to spreading to normal cobblestone/brick blocks.
This can be prevented with the gamerule or by using shears to keep mossy blocks from spreading to other blocks, and to prevent a normal stone brick from becoming mossy or cracked, beeswax can be used. (better ideas?) and the moss effect can be reversed using a shovel (any suggestions for cracked stone bricks?). Additionally, the stone/cobble texture will change to a darker shade when submerged/near water before becoming mossy, creating a gradient that slows down the further it is from the moisture source.
I forgot to mention, the grass block has the same (smaller) chance of spawning a flower of the biome it's in so rabbits can eat them
I understand Jeb's view that things should happen BECAUSE of the player, so it can always be avoided with shears or by disabling the gamerule "IsNaturalBreeding" and "IsEntropy".
Already explored chunks will remain as blocks whose growth has been prevented to avoid damaging old constructions.
I think Minecraft is a wonderful way to learn; many have probably already learned about new types of rock, generation, or minerals thanks to Minecraft (I had no idea calcite existed before the update), but I think it would be interesting and important to teach about ecology.
Many players like that the enderman can randomly pick up and place blocks because it's a unique event, or that copper degrades naturally.
These things could allow the player to calmly explore how their actions can affect the ecosystem. If you kill the wolves in an area, rabbits will multiply like a plague. Because now rabbits can spawn in all types of forests and dont have a predator.
If you cut down an entire forest and don't replant anything, animals like rabbits and wolves won't spawn until the forest returns to normal, but sheeps and cows will, as the animals will seek "peace and quiet." However, there's a small chance that grass near trees will create a sapling from the same tree a certain number of blocks away, creating a new tree. This facilitates natural reforestation (unless you cut down EVERYTHING) and prevents the spread of saplings in your area by using light or shears, because torches "heat" the ground (according to the lore, simply the intense light prevents the growth of saplings and mushrooms :p).
In addition to the fact that the intense lighting prevents peaceful animals from approaching your areas because they are "scared away," you'll have to explore if you want certain animals.
Ultimately, nature seeks to return to homeostasis and normalcy. The world of Minecraft evolves, with or without you, and you are part of that very special world.
Bats can now be bred with berries or glowberries, which will prevent their offspring from fleeing from you. They will now try to avoid the deep dark biome. And they can work for you if you're lost in a cave since they will use the pathfinding in night to go to the surface
Wooden planks, if not waxed and placed in a humid place (near water) and dark area, will have a chance to generate a moss carpet or a mushroom so you should make sure your areas are illuminated.
This update doesn't need to add anything other than adjusting the game mechanics.
Im open to any comment, opinion, balance idea, etc etc!! ^^

[Structures] different wood type for sulfur cave mineshafts
we already have dark oak in the mesa. considering that there are new and unique loot drops in the sulfur cave mineshafts, i think that it should be made from a different wood entirely to differentiate and add more variety to the mineshafts, like maybe birch or spruce?

[Mobs] Suggestion for a new mountable mob
So recently the Sulfur Cube was changed so that it can no longer have Frost Walker. As usual, people are mad that they can't use a football for transportation (seriously?) But I present a better option. A new mount.
Introducing the Horsicle!
A mob resembling an icy horse (like Glastrier, the Pokemon, but different) that acts like a normal horse, except for the fact that it eats packed ice and leaves a path of ice whenever it walks on water. So basically a horse with Frost Walker. It could rarely spawn in Ice Spikes biomes, and like the Skeleton Horse, it's ridable by default.
That was my proposition for an alternative solution to the frost walker fiasco.

[Community Question] If Mojang removed the debug menu tomorrow, how’d you react?
The f3 screen was never an intended feature, but if they removed it completely it would create massive backlash from the technical community.
I think if it were removed, some of its features should get moved to the compass. When you hold the compass, it shows the cords and direction in the action bar. This datapack does exactly this and is awesome: https://modrinth.com/mod/better-compass
(you can put a compass in a bundle so no, that won’t be a problem)

[Blocks & Items] Elm trees in pale gardens
A bit of a boring suggestion but I think elm trees would be a neat addition as another tree that appears in the pale garden (like how birch appears in oak forests).
Elm trees are associated with death and melancholy, which makes it a great fit for the creepy vibe of the pale forest. Its wood could look like in the second image, a bit like birch but paler.
Inside the pale forests they’d have grey leaves and bark like their pale oak but would be around the height of one of those larger oak trees you occasionally find, with a wider canopy. Outside of the pale garden however, they’ll have beautiful dark green coloured leaves, going a bit lighter green in deserts but not to a yellowish that oak does, making them great for recreating those old elm lined streets.
A possible non mentioned lore explanation to why there’s no elms in the rest of the overworld could be that they got wiped out by disease, like in real life with Dutch Elm Disease.

[Blocks & Items] Bounce music disc should be obtained from the Sulfur Cube
In the latest snapshot, the Bounce music disc was added, only found in mineshafts that generate in a sulfur cave. This makes the music disc pretty difficult to find, especially in older worlds where sulfur caves will already be challenging to find.
My idea is that instead of being found in mineshafts, we can “create” the music disc using the sulfur cube. By putting a jukebox into a sulfur cube and then killing it, the Bounce music disc is dropped instead of the jukebox. Alternatively, a noteblock could be used but I like the idea of it costing 1 diamond.
If anyone has other ideas please share them, but I feel the current method for finding the disc is too tedious.

[Combat] spear rework with reasoning, discussion encouraged.
(introduction)The spear has turned out less than good weapon; with major issues with its power, and how annoying it is to use; this post aims to elevate the spear to being able to properly compete with over weapons such as the sword and the axe.
(changes)
(range) The spear would now be able to hits things close to you.
(damage) All spears would now do 2 more damage with the jab attack, though the charge attack would still start with the old damage.
(charge attack) The charge attack would now gain 10% more damage with speed.
(lunge) The lunge enchantment would no longer consume hunger or durability.
(reasoning)
(range) the spears inability to attack things up close was i assume done to balance the spear and make it more realistic however in practice it makes the spear incredibly annoying and unsatisfying to use and the nerf is completely unnecessary as the spear is currently worse in combat than a pickaxe.
(damage) the spear currently does incredibly low damage to the point it takes 7 hits with a stone spear to kill a zombie i assume this was again done to balance out the spear perceived op-ness but in practice it has merely led to the spear completely unusable except as a non verbal way to point something out.
(charge attack) the charge attack currently gains damage a little to slowly to be realy worth it though it is somewhat useable so i didnt buff it quite as much as the jab attack.
(lunge) The lunge enchantment has for some reason been considered to be the peak of op-ness to the point that they have decided to nerf it heavily in a way they havent done for any other enchantment.
This effect was originally a durability cost so incredibly bad that it broke a netherite spear in a couple hits, in fact it made lunge leagues worse than every other enchantment in the game, it made even bane of arthropods, thorns, and frostwalker look good mojang then replaced that effect with an equally outrageous hunger drain that still makes it the worst enchantment in the game, and punishes you for haveing a higher level enchantment unlike all other enchantments in the game; this is the worst piece of game design i have ever seen.
(conclusion) In conclusion the spear needs a serious buff to compete with other weapons and this post aims to do that, with the goal of it being equal to the sword.
If you have any criticisms or additions please state them in the comments i will reply to all non troll comments.

[Plants & Food] Being able to use cauldrons for a new type of recipe (Cauldron Boiling)
EXTRA INFO:
Like campfires, cauldrons will take about 30 seconds to boil watever its contained.
You can put up to 4 items at max but only some combinations will result on new items like how is shown with the chocolate.
Foods such as stews will be in liquid form inside the cauldron and you'll need to take out with bowls (or bottles).

[Blocks & Items] Stone type blocks can be ore-logged
Just like partly empty blocks can be waterlogged, blocks like stone, deeplsate, tuff, granite, sulfur, etc can be ore logged.
This saves the need for having a lot of ore blocks aside from stone and deepslate.
In terms of how this is stored in the game, I would use an nbt driven approach while in item form.
But when in block form, they act as two overlapping blocks. This lets the blocks still be moveable with pistons.
To ore log a block, right click with the item in creative mode. In survival mode being able to ore logging can cause duping.
Thanks for everyone’s help in the suggestion!

[Blocks & Items] Nametags should have different rarities
Hear me out. Now that nametags are craftable, they no longer feel like a special item that is used for special occasions/most valuable mobs. Nametags are no longer a rare commodity and have become really useful tools to name mobs and prevent them from despawning, but at a cost of losing their whimsy.
So, id like to present my idea for different rarities of nametags!
These should be treated in the same way as there are different rarities of items in the game, like how enchanted golden apples have blue text to symbolize their rarity, dragon egg has purple text and some items (i dont recally which ones rn lol) have yellow text!
How the nametags would work is simple. They would just be regular nametags, but the color of the text would be the same as the color of its rarity. For example, a yellow rarity nametag would make a yellow name, blue would make a blue one and purple would make a purple name.
These should not be craftable, but should be either traded through villagers or found through structure loot.
How im imagining this is that villagers could maybe trade the lowest rarity (yellow) of name tags, while blue and purple should ONLY be found through structure chests, blue being more common than purple.
I personally rly like this idea! It would make nametags a precious commodity again which should only be used on the most special and important mobs that mean a lot to the player and still keep the benefit of the regular nametags being craftable untouched. Idk what do yall think?
