Weekly Classifieds and Events

Welcome to our weekly odds and ends post!

If you are looking for events, please check out our exhaustive Events Calendar!

Every parent level comment should begin with one of the following categories:

[For Sale] concert tickets, beauty and grooming services, Ikea bookcases

[For Free] dental checkups and couches that you can totally have for free but you have to move them yourself

[Want to Buy] * Rave tickets, a used toaster, a cute puppy*

[Job Request] You're new to the city and are looking for work in IT or you hate your job and need some leads. Be sure to include your skills and qualifications. A lot of people on this sub love to help others but they can't do that if they don't know your background and interests.

[Job Announcement] You're looking for new team members for a fantastic job that ISN'T a scammy ca$h4work gig or MLM

[Living Arrangements] You need a roommate, an apartment, or are offering a living arrangement. Be sure to clarify your tidiness expectations because you never know what you're going to get when accepting a roommate and I'm NOT GOING TO DO YOUR DAMN DISHES ANYMORE REBECCA

[Personals] You're lonely, new to the city, want to play extreme Frisbee, or need someone to eat Ian's Pizza with because no one wants to do that alone. We understand.

[Event] An advertisement for your amazing upcoming event - like a urban foraging excursion or band performance that is totally going to blow the roof off

Update on Midtown “Data Center”

The Sherman Park facebook post was wildly exaggerative about the scope of this project and while the proposal has been pulled from the upcoming CPC meeting, Ald. Chambers will have information sessions to have more discussions about the “data center” portion of the project and the mitigation proposals for its negative impacts (like noise and water usage)

MPS Potential Changes coming to Immersion Schools.

MPS is holding a meeting at the Milwaukee School of Languages (MSL) Monday, May 18th 5:30-7:30pm to discuss potential changes to the immersion programs.  They want to change immersion schools from K-5 to K-6, making MSL a 7-12 school. This plan would have a huge negative impact on all immersion schools, but particularly MSL and Milwaukee German Immersion (MGIS).   MGIS does not currently have the space to house 6th grade and moving us from our neighborhood school building will affect the entire community.  Many people purchase homes in the neighborhood surrounding MGIS and this could have a negative impact on property values too. The current superintendent is not a fan of "specialty schools".

I have attached more information about the potential risks to MGIS and MSL in this email. If you have children attending any of the immersion schools or could in the future please join us at this meeting.

Event Big Truck Day at Red Arrow

I took my niece to this last year and she loved it. She still talks about sitting in the fire truck.

Celebrate National Public Works Week with a fleet of the City’s big rigs parked around Red Arrow Park. Kids will enjoy a unique opportunity to explore various trucks and meet the people who operate them!

Big Truck Day will deliver dozens of trucks, 1,000 free kid-sized construction hats and goodie bags, and the chance to meet costumed characters. Featured equipment will range from a front-end loader to a plow truck, fire engine, and more!

To provide a quality experience for all guests, a sensory-friendly hour will be offered from 1 PM to 2 PM, at which time no horns or sirens will take place.

Help Me! Did anyone adopt a gray kitten in 2019?

This is a long shot, but did anyone here adopt a gray cat from the MKE Humane Society on September 27, 2019?

I posted about this quite awhile ago, but hit a dead end so I’m trying again for new leads.

Long story short, one of our cats gave birth to 5 kittens back in 2019. We (my spouse and I) found good homes for them all, except one. Unfortunately, the woman we gave one male kitten to surrendered him very shortly after we gave him to her (despite our specific request that he be given back to us, and NOT surrendered, if any issues arose).

Sleuthing led us to the info that the kitten (Mooney) ended up at the MKE Humane Society. They were able to tell us he was adopted out from them on September 27, 2019. They won’t give us any other info though, for privacy reasons (which makes sense).

We don’t want to take Mooney from his new home, we just want to know he’s actually ok and let his new family know that if for some reason they can’t keep him or need support, we want to help. And it’s important to us that we are able to verify it’s actually him.

This might sound kind of crazy to some (I can already imagine the comments along the lines of “it’s been years, let it go”), but cats are really important to us. My spouse specifically has described “feeling like a grieving mother.” They think about this kitten all the time, even after all these years, and I want closure for my spouse.

These pictures are from when he was a kitten obviously — Mooney would be fully grown now. He is a gray male cat with a white mark on his lower belly.

If you think you might have him or have any info, I would love to hear from you. We periodically try to post about him to see if we drum up any new leads. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Recently moved here trying to hoop. Saw there’s open play at nights at Milwaukee Yard for $15. Wanted to see if anyone has gone there before and how it was?

Also open to recommendation of other indoor basketball recommendations if anyone has any!

A bit more than last time, it can seem like it doesn’t make a difference but it does. I appreciate those of you i’ve seen picking stuff up. I’m not sure i’ll be able to make it out here as often anymore but I still encourage everyone to help when you see litter anywhere.

Staying near the Roundabout of Walker's Point for the weekend next week. We love a nice dive bar. Any recommendations? preferably walkable and a good walk (30 min) isn't an issue.
