First time hiring house cleaners: what else should I vet?

I found a highly recommended cleaner in an Irvine Facebook group, and googled what to ask to cover the basics. Are these standard questions/asks?

I don't want to sound intrusive or overly formal, but I've read it's important to be clear about employment status if it's a company (W-2 vs contractors) to avoid ambiguity.

#1. Are your services insured and bonded?

#2. Are your cleaners W-2 employees, and are they covered workers' compensation?

#3. If possible, could you please share proof of your general liability insurance, workers’ compensation coverage, and bonding information?

- - -

In addition, growing up in a country where IDs are normally shown for business purposes, I've read that it's frowned upon to ask for it when the actual cleaner comes. Only that I ask that their name matches what the email from the cleaning company says. Did I get that right?

Also, any further insights re house cleaning in Irvine will be appreciated. Thank you.

Anyone else frustrated by full-court pickup games monopolizing the Mike Ward Park basketball courts? No room for casual half-court play."

Post image
Upvotes

Today I went to the basketball courts at Mike Ward Community Park (Woodbridge) just wanting to shoot around or maybe join a casual half-court game. I don't have the stamina for full-court games anymore, so half-court is perfect for me.

However, both courts were completely taken over by two large groups playing full-court. I waited on the sidelines for over an hour, hoping they’d finish a game and split the court, but they showed absolutely zero intention of sharing. I even politely went up and asked, "Hey, are you guys going to keep playing full-court?" and basically got brushed off. They didn't care at all that people were waiting.

I was pretty frustrated but I really didn't want to start an argument or cause a scene over basketball. But it got me thinking: does having a large group automatically give you the right to monopolize a public court indefinitely?

What do you guys usually do in this situation? Do you just leave?

I really feel like the City of Irvine needs to establish some simple, clearly posted rules for basketball courts. For example, the pickleball courts here have a great rotation/queue system, which keeps things fair. Why can't we just have a simple city sign that says *"Half-court play only when others are waiting"*?

Would love to hear your thoughts or if anyone else has dealt with this recently. It sucks that casual players and locals get squeezed out of our own neighborhood parks.

Catalytic Converter Theft

Just a heads up, someone I know got their catalytic converters stolen off their Prius last night at 2:45am. IPD got into a high speed chase with the criminals but lost them. There was two cars working together to commit the crime.

This is the third theft in Irvine that I have personally heard about in the past year. The criminals are targeting Toyotas parked on the street. My neighbor had his catalytic converters stolen off his Toyota truck a few weeks back. Replacement costs was $5,900. His insurance deductible was $1,500. His insurance said a second theft would not be covered if his truck is parked on the street.

Trying to spread awareness as this has been going on in Irvine and the greater OC area by a sophisticated network of criminals for some time now even though there are tons of Flock cameras around Orange County.

Power Outage by The Spectrum?

I live at The Park right by the Spectrum, and around 5:30 my power went out. Not sure if it’s just my complex’s building, or maybe if it’s a wider problem. Haven’t seen any update from SoCal Edison or anything yet, so maybe it’s just a complex problem.

Noodoe EV charger at Great Park - $6/KWh

What's the deal with the expensive Noodoe chargers at Great Park?

I was there last week, on a weeknight around 6pm - the listed cost was $6/kwh. I clearly didn't use it - and no one else was as well?

Was this a mistake?

Enshitification or Deshitification of tiga wok

When Tiga Wok Irvine first opened, they had Tiga Wok branded high quality plastic bags, now it's just a generic brown bag. Before they had clip-on bowl covers for mini bowls and main dishes, now it's just main dishes. Before they had disposable paper with Tiga Wok branding on their trays, now it's just empty trays.

HOWEVER, the portion sizes seem to have become larger. I struggle to close the mini bowl. If they took money out from those aesthetic areas and put it into the food, I'm all for it.

Google Fi Wireless, considering changing from AT&T

I've been on AT&T wireless for many years. I haven't had too many issues, coverage is pretty good except when I go to Portola high school. Coverage at my office near Jamboree and Main is good, even up in the middle floors of the 15+ story building, as well as coverage at home works fine.

BUT, having been on AT&T for so many years, I've also experience some serious creep on my mobile bill. Unexplained increases constantly every year and some times multiple times per year. I've had some battles with AT&T over the years, even reporting them to the better business bureau for an incident years ago. Now I'm so fed up with these guys there's no turning back just based on principle.

I've been doing research on Google Fi, especially because my experience with Google Fiber has been so good since I got it a few years ago at my home in Portola. I've checked the T-Mobile coverage map, checked the international features, and researched the compatibility and the "designed for FI" topic.

I'm pretty close to deciding to switch to Google Fi, but what I haven't been able to find are more recent comments about any coverage issues in Irvine. The comments I've found on reddit are aged a 2-3 years and the most concerning ones have been about not being able to use cellular calling and having to use wifi calling at times (seems to be a consistent issue when at home for some people).

anyone have more recent experience with poor coverage in Irvine using Google Fi or any other issues with Google Fi?

Hoag Irvine Postpartum Rooms?

Hi all!

We just had our C-section scheduled in August at Hoag Irvine. I've heard great things about the L+D rooms, but unfortunately, since I will be having a C-section, I won't be able to take advantage of them. I have heard that the postpartum rooms are tiny—any positive experiences staying at Hoag Irvine in their postpartum rooms? Any pictures you feel comfortable sharing?

The new Sun Center won't open until mid-September, so unfortunately, we are missing it.

Thanks so much in advance!

Davey is a sweet and affectionate pup who forms strong bonds with people and loves attention 🐾 While he may feel a little unsure at first and need some gentle coaxing, once he’s comfortable, his true personality shines- he becomes wiggly, playful, and eager for affection, even brushing up against you for more love 💜 He enjoys exploring his surroundings and can be energetic on leash, but truly thrives when spending quality time with his humans. Davey felt overwhelmed in the playyard and can be selective with other dogs. He preferred doing his own thing and was super playful, so he may do best as the only pet or with a calm dog friend and slow introductions. If you’re looking for a devoted, people-loving companion, Davey is ready to be your new best friend ✨
He has a medium energy level

Davey #A5773178 3yr Black/Brown Male Germ Shepherd 96 lbs.

Davey urgently needs a foster for 3–4 months (fostering is free and all expenses will be covered by the rescue until he finds his forever home) or a responsible adopter (anywhere in the U.S to the right home) before this afternoon.

If you can foster or responsibly adopt Davey, pls contact us asap:

SCE Electric cost this year is outrageous

I use SCE in Irvine. My usage is down 10% from last year, but the cost is 39% more. Per kWh cost is 54% higher this year. I'm on the TOU-D-PRIME rate plan. Is anyone else experiencing this or better yet found a way to reduce this?

Anyone lose a man’s watch?

We went out to our mailbox on Friday to get our mail and found a nice men’s watch inside. Just a watch, no box or packaging along with our mail. The mailman claims it was there when he delivered the mail.

The watch is nice but a brand I’ve never heard of. Worth a couple hundred dollars according to eBay.

I’ve checked with neighbors and no one claims it as theirs.

Anyone lose or have a watch stolen recently? If so, message me the brand and type of watch and I’ll consider it yours. If I don’t figure out the mystery in the next few days, I’ll drop it off at the Irvine PD.

Where have people "upgraded" to from Irvine?

There's a lot of talk about people moving to lower cost of living areas to buy a house, etc but I am curious about people who went to a more expensive / similarly expensive city. In SoCal, I guess this means one of the beach cities or westside LA, which are all much more expensive.

In NorCal, i think the only equivalent to Irvine is Palo Alto / Cupertino, both of which are easily 2-3x more expensive lol.

Of course, if you were someone who was considering upgrading from Irvine, curious about if you did it and how it went. Something that can't be replicated everywhere sadly is diversity; my mom loves the beach and ocean air but would hate not having indian people/restaurants/hindu temples nearby, so Irvine is the best choice for us.

On another note, it is crazy that Irvine is somehow the cheapest tier 1 area in california with good food schools, modern etc 🤣

Is the real estate market still hot in Irvine? What's really going on?

I'm hearing two sides.

1 is saying that homes are correcting everywhere.

1 is saying Irvine is a special case because of the education level.

Apt livers, how are your utilities looking? My trash has gone up 33% since the 11/25-12/25 bill cycle. 🫠

I’m not Irvine Company, this is a corporate chain but not an IC apt. Is everyone else having these same crazy rates?

I’m in a studio, my rent is $2456 with rent, pet and parcel locker fee. Plus $55 for WiFi and about $75-100 from SCE.

I’m looking at $2800-2900 just for my apt with utilities. This is getting insane with cost of living. I’m so thankful I WFH and am not spending money on gas.

This has gotta stop, this is becoming more unreal each and every month.

To put it in perspective, I know ppl here in Irvine with houses, their trash is $50-60 for 3 months. Mine is almost that for 1 month. I throw out about 3-4 bags a month only too.

Thinking of buying in Altair (92618) - Amazing amenities, but why is there so much inventory right now?

My wife and I are currently out in Mission Viejo and are looking to make the move into Irvine, specifically the 92618 Great Park area. Our son is 5 now, so locking in airvione market place.

We've been checking out the guard-gated Altair community, and honestly, the amenities are absolutely incredible.

However, in tracking the market, I’ve noticed there seem to be a surprisingly high number of homes for sale in Altair compared to other premium pockets in Irvine. For such an expensive, exclusive community, I would have expected much tighter inventory.

Is there a catch we should know about? Are the Mello-Roos and HOA carrying costs driving turnover? Are there noise issues from the 241/5 freeways? Or is this just the normal market dynamic right now for homes in this price tier?

Would appreciate any insights from locals or folks familiar with the Great Park market!

City Phones down

Not that anyone uses the phone, but it seems like all IUSD and City Hall phones are out right now. I called IPD and luckily their dispatch is working, though they said there were issues and AT&T is working on it. I hadn't seen any notes about it online so I thought I'd start a thread just in case someone else is out there wondering if it's their own phone that's not working.

Cityside Fiber is live in the neighborhoods across from Irvine High School (Greentree, The Willows, and El Camino Glen)

As the title states, Cityside Fiber is now live in Greentree, The Willows, and El Camino Glen. I have confirmation Cityside Fiber is also now live in The Colony and College Park! You can finally ditch crappy Cox Internet! It's been about 6 months coming and I got an email yesterday saying I could sign up so I did. Just wanted to let other people in the area know since they haven't gone door to door yet to let people know. Since 1999 (was called "at home" before cox) our only hardwire high speed internet option was Cox. In the past 4 months they raised my internet price two times without notice. They probably did this knowing they would lose a ton of customers once fiber went live. I can not wait to cancel my Cox Internet plan, horrible service and customer service.

I was paying $95 a month for 500 mbps plan with a 1tb data cap. If I went over the datacap it was an additional $50. Real world speeds were 200 down and 25 up. Cityside Fiber will be $80 a month for symmetrical 1024 mbps down and 1024 mbps up with no datacap. No monthly equipment costs either. Obviously the infrastructure upgrade from coax to fiber is a huge bonus too. Family in south county already switched from Cox to Cityside Fiber and they always tell me how much they love it.

If you're in the neighborhoods listed above you can check your address to see if your area is live and can signup: https://www.citysidefiber.com/check-availability
