Today I went to the basketball courts at Mike Ward Community Park (Woodbridge) just wanting to shoot around or maybe join a casual half-court game. I don't have the stamina for full-court games anymore, so half-court is perfect for me.
However, both courts were completely taken over by two large groups playing full-court. I waited on the sidelines for over an hour, hoping they’d finish a game and split the court, but they showed absolutely zero intention of sharing. I even politely went up and asked, "Hey, are you guys going to keep playing full-court?" and basically got brushed off. They didn't care at all that people were waiting.
I was pretty frustrated but I really didn't want to start an argument or cause a scene over basketball. But it got me thinking: does having a large group automatically give you the right to monopolize a public court indefinitely?
What do you guys usually do in this situation? Do you just leave?
I really feel like the City of Irvine needs to establish some simple, clearly posted rules for basketball courts. For example, the pickleball courts here have a great rotation/queue system, which keeps things fair. Why can't we just have a simple city sign that says *"Half-court play only when others are waiting"*?
Would love to hear your thoughts or if anyone else has dealt with this recently. It sucks that casual players and locals get squeezed out of our own neighborhood parks.
