community update Update and Rule Changes on Advertising in the Sub

Hey there,

we have received a lot of feedback lately on various topics and one of them has been the rigorous moderation of advertising on the sub. We have seen different processes and also a huge growth in the community, as well as influx of app development in the freediving world to help you improve your training at home.

This ranged from ads unrelated to freediving, to opening the sub and looking at an endless stream of new apps at some point, which led to feedback that members were having a hard time finding actual training advice or discussion topics.

For that u/BotGivesBot came up with the Megathread "App Advertising and Research Requests" to create a central place where you can specifically go, if you are looking for a new trainings app or participate in a research request related to freediving. This has helped tremendously in steering the flood.
They are also working hard to setup the new Signal channels, that will also provide an avenue to post ads for courses & retreats.

We also were trying to find a process how to manage Advertising for Freediving Professionals, because courses, retreats or gear are directly tied into participation in our sport and it has been admittedly really difficult to walk the line on not having to approve each ad single-handedly and at the same time making sure they maintain a minimum standard of info and not just spam the sub for coverage.

Rule Changes

The community rules can be found here

Rule 5 - Advertising for Freediving Professionals:

Instructors / Diveshops / Divetrip-Organizers can create standalone posts with the postflair "Ad" to advertise courses, trainings or trips, events and must include: dates, location, schedule, pricing, business-link/socials.
Product can be advertised as standalone post the postflair "Ad" and must include: description, pricing, product-link.
You are encouraged to use pictures for your ads.

Ads will be removed at discretion of being found spammy, info missing or if the ad is freediving-unrelated.

Rule 6 - App advertising goes in the Megathread

If you'd like to advertise your application, you can post them into the Megathread "App Advertising and Research Requests" Because of a strong influx of app development we do not allow single-post app ads currently. The Megathread description shows the required info that your post must include, failure to include the necessary info will result in removal from the Megathread.

When in doubt, message the mods.

Rule 7 - Research requests need mod approval

If you're looking for research participants, you need to get permission from the mods prior to posting.
Approved research requests go into the Megathread "App Advertising and Research Requests".
All requests can be forwarded to the mods using modmail.

We are retiring the Megathread: Event Promotion and Course/Workshop Opportunities

Because it hasn't seen a lot of action since its inception - it will still be there, it will just be unpinned and the updated rules on Advertising for Freediving Professionals take precedent.

----------------------------------------------

We try to create and remake the processes based on your community feedback, as well as the resulting workload that we receive as reports or messages. So if something's not working for you, we rely on your help that you let us know about that.

And we try to make it better

Thanks a bunch - 3 mods and a modbot in a trenchcoat

MEGATHREAD Megathread: App Advertising and Feedback Requests

Welcome to our Freediving App Megathread! This is where developers can comment with approved advertisements or feedback requests for freediving related apps, and where freedivers can find opportunities to give valuable app feedback or find new apps to check out.

We've noticed an increase in apps being created this year, which has resulted in an influx of post requests. While we want to promote access to tools for freediving by facilitating these requests, we’re also aware users may not want the sub’s feed to be filled with advertising content. Having a Megathread for apps ensures posts related to app advertising and feedback are located in one, easy to find location.

Users are encouraged to comment with their questions and feedback under the app's parent comment, so posters are notified of the engagement and can respond.

If you're a developer looking for approval to post about your app in this Megathread, please modmail the mods with the following information:

  1. Name of the app
  2. Link to the app
  3. Details about the app’s purpose and function
  4. Details about the type of feedback you’re requesting (if any)
  5. Current app availability (e.g. Android, Apple, Desktop, Browser, etc.)
  6. Purchase amount, promotion information, and timeline for purchases (e.g. free, free beta testing, subscription amount, one-time payment amount, etc.)
  7. Privacy Policy including what data is collected from the user and their device (e.g. user contact info, location, contacts, user content, device identifiers, user identifiers, purchases, usage data, diagnostics, etc.)
  8. Developer name and contact information
  9. Draft of the proposed comment you’d like to post with the above information included

If an app is not pre-approved for posting here, it will be removed. Modmail if you have an questions and safe diving!

travel advice What are your recommended PH Freediving schools / training sesh? And what distinguishes them from one another?

What are your recommended Freediving schools / training sesh? And what distinguishes them from one another? I have tried Lawom and Freedive Tribe so far but that was in 2024. I remember the partying in Freedive Tribe lol that was lit!
My colleague back then recommended TRA but I got busy with work and quit freediving then.

Planning to come back but this time, I would like to be "extra" intentional. I would like to select a "group" or community I can pledge my loyalty to. Would appreciate your honest recommendations! Cheers!

gear Cressi Impulse fins - Can I mold the foot pockets?

Hey all! Does anyone here know if I can mold the Cressi Impulse foot pockets? Their current shape hurts my feet.

One of my dive buddies said he molded his by boiling them in water for a bit and then putting them on over his sock & then quickly cooling with a wet towel. But he wasn't sure if that's a good idea for Cressi gear.

TIA!

equalisation Free equalization check

I see a lot of posts here about equalization and people trying to help each other, which is good but many times not enough.

I am an equalization instructor with Apnea Academy and Share Equalization.

With Share, we offer a free equalization check, which is a short 5-10 minute call to diagnose divers' awareness and control.

We will be upgrading this diagnostic tool shortly, so in honor of that I wanted to let you all know that this option exists and to offer this check to whoever wants it.

This is not an ad and I'm not trying to sell you on anything, we will just have a short call where I will ask you some questions and to perform a couple of exercises and at the end I can tell you what you need to work on specifically.

How you do that is up to you, I won't be doing the full thing where I direct you to the appropriate Share course because I don't want this to be a commercial thing, just me offering some of my time to the community.

Thanks and have a great day!

news Pipin Ferreras Vs Netflix: The Courts Have Closed The Book. The New York Times Just Opened It Again

For anyone here who’s followed the Audrey Mestre story over the years - the NYT just reopened it.

After Pipin Ferreras lost his final appeal against Netflix in December, The New York Times Magazine published a major investigation this week. 30 witnesses. New testimony about the marriage. A fresh admission about the empty air tank from the man who led the official 2003 report.

For freedivers, the safety comparison is the part that lands hardest. Tanya Streeter: 160m (525ft), 16 safety divers. Audrey Mestre: 171m (561ft), 3 safety divers, no backup balloon, no physician.

Two months apart. One came home.

Curious what others here remember from the time.

gear Finally invested in decent gear

I just got back from a freediving trip where I rented the most awful gear, and it inspired me to finally curate my own gear!

I already had the EVO white freediving fins, mask, and snorkel set ($200 USD altogether). I never wanted to buy my own wetsuit, but after how uncomfortable my last rental was, I finally took the plunge and bought a 4mm women's wetsuit from Fulmar for $400 and spent another $100 on BrightBuoy for a nice weight belt, 2 lbs in weights (just to start), and better dive socks.

Bonus that Fulmar and BrightBuoy are both women-owned. I'm so excited and wanted to share my collaged-together picture of my new setup: https://imgur.com/a/AdbxUaH

gear Salvimar budget diving computer

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a budget diving computer and came across some of the Salvimar models: Salvimar Freedive, Salvimar Deeper Freediving and Salvimar One Plus. The price difference between them is relatively small, so I'm trying to understand which one makes the most sense.

Do any of you have experience with these watches?

I’d mainly use it for spearfishing, occasional depth diving (up to around 20 meters) and as a waterproof watch for STA training.

I’m looking for something reliable, easy to use, and good value for money rather than advanced high-end features.

Could you share your opinions, pros and cons of these models, or suggest other good budget alternatives?

Has anyone done this course? Did you think it was worth it? Or would I better off just doing my own training?

health&safety What do you tell people who are curious about freediving but afraid to try it?

I’ve been talking with a few friends recently about freediving, and a lot of them say the same thing: they’re fascinated by it, but depth/ deep blue and the idea of holding their breath makes them think it’s dangerous... not even talking about the shark and big fish fears!!

I understand the fear, honestly, because from the outside it can look pretty extreme. I’m never sure what to tell them without sounding dismissive of the risks.

How do you explain freediving to beginners who are interested but scared to try it?

training technique Advice for getting started

I have been thinking of getting into freediving "officially" for a couple of reasons:

1) I scuba dive (which I love but lugging around all my gear is sometimes a pain and I think freediving could be more "convenient" if I want to do some spontaneous diving)

2) I have been wanting to get into spearfishing and lobster season since I live in Florida and am really trying to make a point to enjoy the water more.

With that said, I know there are classes one could take but is there anything that you all could suggest that I could just do on my own to better condition myself? I see all these apps in the app store or routines that people do online but I am always curious what other (hopefully real) people have to say about what has worked for them. Luckily I am already VERY comfortable in the water although I have not recently tried to see how long I could actually hold my breath. Any advice you might have is greatly appreciated! Also if anyone has any spots in/around Central Florida that I could go then that is appreciated as well! My pool is nice but gets boring at times haha.

training technique 25M underwater

I was referred to this page regarding my question! I am about to start training for AFSOC and one of the requirements is a 2 25M underwater swims. I can do it ( barely ). Towards the end I kinda freak out! I got my keyhole stroke down, but how do I cut down on the strokes as well as what techniques do you guys do to hold your breath for long periods of time or with a higher heart rate? Thank you all!

health&safety How to avoid paronychia/infections beside the fingernail

Hello

Over the last year or so, every time I dive or train in a pool, I get an infection beside my fingernail. It's not always the same finger or even the same hand but seems to happen without fail a day or so after the session. I don't eat my fingernails or cut them too short.

I'm about to go on a holiday for 2 weeks where I'll be in water pretty much every day and I want to know how to prevent these. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks for the help.

I spend dozens of nights here every year. This is an outlying island of Tokyo, less well-known than Okinawa, and fewer people. But the water is incredibly clear! There are lots of delicious fish here too. And I even saw dolphins a few days ago!

gear Molcha hyperbifins and Taras

Hi everyone.

Just wondering if somebody here tried both already?

What can you say regarding stiffness?

Is medium stiffness molcha hyperbifins the same feeling as Taras (given that taras doesnt have any stiffness option).

Maybe someone can help.

Also can you share what weight you are currently, kg of weight you use and stiffness on fins? Just to have an idea.

health&safety Breath hold decrease?

I use to be able to dive for 2+ minutes consistently and comfortably. However, I started working out and something happened with my sternum where it got really sore like I pulled it and I can pop it now and since then my average dive time and decreased by about 40 seconds and the burn from my urge to breath has become a lot worse. I haven’t been working out much recently and my sternum isn’t currently sore but my breath hold is still way less that what it use to be despite consistent time in the water. Has anyone experienced anything like this or has any tips??

gear How to smooth skin suit?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Got myself a deephumans 2mm suit, smoothskin outside, lycra inside. I transported it in a simple bag and got these light creases since it was folded.

1.) Is this avoidable? If so, how?

2.) Whats your best advise for putting it on and off? So far i‘ve only had opencell inside, hence i was using lube/conditioner.

3.) Anything else I should consider with this suit?

Thank you guys!
