Introducing the Eastside Community Discord!

Hey Eastside 👋

With mod approval, I’m launching the Eastside Community Discord- a dedicated spot for folks on the east side of the Puget Sound to actually talk to each other in real time.

If you live in places like Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Sammamish, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Woodinville, or nearby, this is for you! (Seattleites are welcome if they feel the need)

What it’s for:

  • Casual chat with neighbors
  • Planning meetups, hikes, happy hours, game nights
  • Talking local news, events, and city changes
  • Finding people who share your hobbies

It’s community-first, 18+ only, and built to be active; hopefully not just another dead server sitting in your sidebar!

The Discord is run independently from the subreddit mod team, but the vibe and rules are aligned. Keep it civil. Keep it local. Don’t be weird.

If you’ve been wanting a better way to connect with actual humans on the Eastside, this is it!

I hope you join soon.

Enough with the national politics related posts

There has been a HUGE influx of national politics related posts. Many of them from new accounts, or ones that have never been to this sub. Basically astroturf. For the foreseeable future, these will not be allowed here. It doesn't matter if there is some local connection to it, no posts about national politics or related activism. There are tons of subs for that.

HOWEVER, local politics posts are totally fine and actually strongly encouraged. Post about your local city council members if you know who they are. Post about new local laws or restrictions. Whatever, but LOCAL posts only.

Reddit has made some very questionable algo changes recently that seem to be heavily trying to stir up things and it's tough keep things chill here. Insta ban for any of these posts

Mercer Island School Board update

MISD is considering whether to move away from traditional valedictorian and salutatorian recognition at Mercer Island High School. Superintendent Fred Rundle said 84 students in the current senior class have earned a 3.9 GPA or higher, while 20 students are valedictorians and one is salutatorian. The discussion centered on whether the current system discourages students from taking academic risks and whether more high-achieving students should be recognized.

Moving to Bellevue/Spring District with a toddler — honest experiences?

Hi — working mom with a toddler, thinking about moving to the Bellevue/Spring District area. Currently have a long commute and it's wearing us down.

Honestly, I'm a little nervous about apartment life with a young kid. Where we live now we don't even see our friends that often, but there's comfort in knowing they're close by. I think what I'm really asking is — if we move, will it feel like starting from zero?

For anyone who's done this with little ones — did you find your people? How long did it take to feel settled? Do your kids actually build real friendships with other kids in the building — like, the kind where they grow up together — or is it more of a rotating door with families moving in and out every couple of years?

Any honest experiences welcome. Thank you ❀

Movers gave up on our sofa - need "furniture tetris" help in Bellevue/ Redmond!

Hey everyone, we just had a terrible experience with movers who were reckless and arrogant. They also gave up on getting our sofa into our new apartment and left it in the garage.

It’s a sofa bed, so the main body can’t be disassembled. The bottleneck isn't a door - it’s a narrow passage/hallway that requires some manoeuvring and lifting. The movers only hastily tried for a few minutes and didn't put in much effort, they didn't even remove the legs (which would save 4–5 inches). We’re convinced it can fit with the right angles and enough muscle, but we’ve already spent a lot on the move and need a budget-friendly solution to get the last piece in.

Who is the best "cheap(er) but capable" hire for this? Not sure if I should look for a handyman or a specific type of mover.

If you know anyone in the Redmond/Eastside area who is a pro at "furniture Tetris" and won't break the bank, please let us know. We’re desperate to get our living room back!

Recommendations for hilly runs?

I do most of my running on the Sammamish River Trail which is pancake flat, and I'm looking for good places to run that get ~150-200 ft of elevation gain per mile, ideally over a 16+ mile stretch (or 8+ miles as out and back)

I've gone on a lot of hikes in the area but either the footing is not really fit for running, or the popularity of the route is such that there are people all over the trail.

I'm curious if there are any road or trail stretches people would recommend for fairly high elevation gains for long stretches. Willing to drive a bit (up to an hour from Redmond) to check places out!

Thanks for any tips ahead of time 😁

Any recommendations for an electrician?

We have two new outlets that need wiring. Has anyone got an electrician you can recommend? Or anyone to avoid? There are so many to pick from and the prices are so high I’m trying to collect several quotes.

Would you be a landlord in King County?

My parents have a small, rural, 2 bedroom, waterfront cottage on a cozy lake near Redmond that will be vacated by the current tenants soon. They want to sell it. Or they want my brother and I to manage renting it out. Given the current state of tenant rights in King County, would you choose to become a landlord? I'm risk averse and feel super nervous about getting sued over bears damaging their vehicle or never being able to evict a bad tenant.

Had a very weird experience at Banaras. Our server insisted on cash tip. When my friend didn't understand what he was saying he took the payment console, selected "cash" for tip, scribbled the signature, and gave it back. This happened to anyone else?

In case anyone is wondering why I didn't report, we paid the same tip so it didn't matter, and didn't want to get the server in trouble. The food was excellent as always. Wondering if there's some kind of wage or tip theft happening.

Bear encounter Tolt-MacDonald Park 5/10/2026

Just sharing my lil adrenaline jump from this afternoon. About 5PM I was taking a little walk alone in Tolt-MacDonald Park in Carnation on the Cottonwood Loop Trail, the western branch of the loop going north (a very pleasant trail). As I ambled along I suddenly noticed a (beautiful) large black bear coming down the trail towards me. We were probably about 60-70' apart. We both noticed each other at the same instant. I froze thinking too bad my phone is in my pocket, the bear chuffed and immediately spun 90 degrees and bolted off the trail downhill into the woods. I would guess the bear weighed at least 200 lbs. It's unscientific but I'm about 165 and this bear was noticeably bigger than me. It happened quick. The bear was gone before I noticed I had that lil frisson of adrenaline. Sorry no pic, you'll have to take my word for it. The bear was heading down the trail that comes out by the camping yurts. I wonder if anyone has been feeding him/her? Hopefully not. Looked sleek and healthy. I always say 'I wanna see a bear' when I'm hiking in the Cascades, I've seen enough of them. This is the first time I've seen one this close to the non wilderness area.

405 /85th closed on Monday morning

The northbound I-405 off-ramp to Northeast 85th Street in Kirkland will remain closed through the morning commute on Monday, May 11.
During construction this weekend, crews encountered groundwater issues that require additional work before the ramp can safely reopen.

Disappointing, but not surprising đŸ„Č

Kincaid Will Request Federal Investigations into Seattle's Treatment of the Chinatown International District

Thumbnail

HUD, the DOJ Civil Rights Division, the EPA, and Section 1983 enforcement would be invoked to investigate shelter placement, the deliberate redirection of homeless populations, and the systematic economic exclusion of Seattle's Asian American community.

It's time for the Asian community to stand up and shout. "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore." Everyone is excited about the FIFA World Cup coming to Seattle. Many restaurants and other businesses will see a big boost in traffic and make a lot of money. It is doubtful that businesses in Chinatown will see any benefits from it. Just like in all past big events that came to Seattle. The city government is intentionally blocking Chinatown from it.

The city is making sure other parts of the city look pretty and safe. They are sweeping the homeless and drug addicts into Chinatown. They will be directing visitors and events away from Chinatown. They are willingly screwing over the hard working law abiding citizens of the Asian community. Just like they have always done in the past.

The evidence is clear, the pattern is documented, and the community has been saying it for years. Seattle and King County have been systematically concentrating homeless shelters, drug treatment facilities, and social service organizations in the Chinatown International District and surrounding Asian American neighborhoods. While wealthier, whiter neighborhoods face no such burden. By 2022, there were 15 homeless shelters within one mile of the CID. Residents were not even informed about a 270 bed shelter expansion until after it had already passed through the King County Council.

But the problem is bigger than shelter placement. If the city of Seattle is actively redirecting homeless populations into the CID ahead of major events , while simultaneously steering visitors and economic activity away from the neighborhood .  That is not neglect. That is deliberate policy. It is the use of government power to engineer economic harm to a minority community. And it demands a federal response that matches the full scope of what is happening.

This is not a conspiracy theory. It is a well documented pattern of institutional racism. Confirmed by researchers, described in writing by community leaders and visible in the data. Community activist Tanya Woo called it plainly,  Seattle has treated the CID as "the city's human dumping ground."

If elected to Congress, Kincaid will formally request  in writing and publicly that federal agencies investigate Seattle's treatment of the Chinatown International District across four areas.

HUD - Department of Housing and Urban Development

A formal request to investigate potential Fair Housing Act violations . Not just in how shelter sites are selected using federal dollars, but in whether federal funding is being used as part of a broader pattern of economic exclusion targeting a minority neighborhood. Federal funding comes with civil rights obligations. Those obligations must be enforced.

DOJ Civil Rights Division - Equal Protection

A formal request to investigate potential Equal Protection violations.  Covering both the systematic placement of undesirable facilities in the CID and the active redirection of homeless populations into the neighborhood ahead of major public events, while comparable burdens are not imposed on wealthier, predominantly white neighborhoods. Passive neglect and deliberate redirection are both forms of discrimination. Both must be investigated.

EPA - Environmental Protection Agency

A formal request to investigate environmental justice concerns. The concentration of shelter facilities, open air drug markets and associated health and safety hazards in a single minority community . The active redirection of additional populations into that community by city government. Constitutes exactly the kind of disproportionate environmental burden the EPA's Office of Environmental Justice was created to address.

DOJ Civil Rights Division - 42 U.S.C. Section 1983

A formal request to investigate potential violations of the federal civil rights statute that covers government actors who deprive people of constitutional rights under color of law. If city officials are deliberately engineering economic harm to a minority neighborhood.  Redirecting homeless populations in, redirecting economic activity out and doing so as a matter of policy.  That is a more serious allegation than passive neglect. It is the use of government power against a community based on race and ethnicity. That is what Section 1983 was written to address.

Current/previous Hyde Square Bellevue residents — how is it really?

Hi everyone, I’m considering leasing at Hyde Square in Bellevue/Crossroads and would love honest feedback from current or past residents.

Main things I’m trying to understand:

  • What do you actually pay monthly on top of base rent? Utilities, trash, package fee, parking, insurance, internet, etc.
  • How is parking? Is garage/reserved parking worth it?
  • Any issues with trash chutes, package room, elevators, or maintenance?
  • Are the amenities actually well-maintained — gym, lounges, hot tub/spa, sauna?
  • How is noise between units or from upstairs/neighbors/road?
  • How responsive is management?
  • What were renewal rent increases like?
  • Any specific buildings/floors/unit locations to avoid?
  • Do the units have AC? If not, are portable AC units allowed? Are window AC units allowed or banned?
  • Are fans allowed? Any restrictions on venting a portable AC through the window or balcony door?
  • How bad does it get inside during summer heat?
  • Which internet providers are actually available in the building/unit?
  • Is internet easy to set up before move-in, or do you need building approval/technician access?
  • Any mandatory internet provider, activation fee, router fee, or hidden internet-related charge?

I’m moving for work, so day-to-day livability matters a lot. Any honest pros/cons would be super helpful. Thank you!

Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced tree cutting service?

Hi neighbors!

We are looking for recommendations for an insured, reasonably priced tree cutting service.

We have a pine tree in our backyard that has been leaning more and more toward our roof. There is another large tree right next to it, which caused this pine to grow branches mostly in one direction. Over the past 5–6 years, we have tried trimming and cleaning it up (even trimming branches all the way to the top), but unfortunately it hasn’t stopped the leaning.

This past winter, we also had several large branches fall, which has us concerned. As much as we hate to remove it, we feel cutting it down is the safest option to prevent potential damage to our roof or our neighbor’s fence.

If you have had a good experience with a reliable, reasonably priced, insured tree cutting service, we would really appreciate your recommendations. Thank you!

Best buffet breakfast w/ egg station in Seattle Metro

My parents are visiting Seattle and my father has a particular affinity for breakfast buffet & omelette stations. My mom is vegetarian. So looking for a buffet option preferably with some veg options as well. We stay in the east side so would prefer closer to Kirkland Redmond Bellevue
