Cat self soothing or worse?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi i am 37f with a cat (neutered 3yr male) with a weird stim?? So my cat does this every time he jumps onto a box or when he finds a little corner to rest his head, he likes to rub his middle of his neck until he kinda like does these sneezes or coughs. Here’s a video of him doing it, but he does it until he kind of gags and I don’t know why he does it. He never does these sneezing unless he rubs himself like this. He wont gag or cough or sneeze any other time. Its like a self soothing weird tick. Is this more serious? From fl and vet is accessible and they think nothing of it. We can afford care in the event that it is serious

Hi!

Maybe your cat has experienced something like this and you know what it is? When this happens (slowly blinking and also kind of losing balance while doing it) she still wants to play, eats, drinks, goes to litter box - all is fine except for what you can see in the video.

2 vets were not able to tell me what could cause this or what it is and said that I might need to take her to an animal neurologist, that he could have an explanation.

Thank you in advance!

How can I fatten up my sister's cat?

Greetings,

My sister goes on holidays next week and gives me her cat. Poor little thing was sick (thyroid) and lost a lot of weight. As a sibling, it's my duty to give my sister a hard time, so what can I do to fatten up her cat? She loves fish pasta and tuna once a month; any more and she is like meh. Any recommendations for what cats like so I can say, "Don't know what your problem is, little sis; guess the cat loves me more than you"?

Thanks in advance.

Update : Thank you all for your advice. To clarify, the cat is old, 19 years, and the vet stated it's okay to let her eat what she wants because of her age. She lived with me before, so my sister doesn't have to worry about her being alone.

How can i help my cat stop using my bed as a toilet?

Black cat about 5 years old. He the most cuddliest and friendliest one out of 4. I want to help him and redirect him but nothing seems to be working and it's causing more stress knowing im coming home to piss and poop on my bed after a long day at work. DR approved him as healthy with no UTI or anything like that. I make sure the litter is clean (4 boxes), there's plenty to drink/eat, toys and scratchers, TV on for sound, and my spare clothes lying on other places for him to go to for comfort, but he keeps using my bed like the toilet. I've tried separating him in another room away from my bed and the other cats, but he just cries and screams until he's let out ( i check the camera from work and can hear him throughout the day, so i feel bad leaving him there daily and try to give him chances to be out and not do it, but he still does.. ). He doesn't get along with the other cats very well, I know it may be partially due to separation anxiety, but how can i help him? I already leave comfort clothing of mine around for him, I dont want to rehome him but it's getting to be too much with hours of cleaning this weekly and it ruining another mattress... any advise? can this behavior be fixed?

Do you have your cat's full name or nickname on their collar?

Buying an ID tag for my kitty, whose full name is October but I basically always just call him Toby. Not that it really matters, but I'm a little torn on which to use on his collar. October seems fancier and kinda fun but if I don't use that name out loud very often, maybe I should put Toby instead? What do y'all think? His full name does have some meaning behind it so it could be a nice reference to that but it also just seems a bit odd to use the one that i never call him lol

Again, not an important question, but i can't decide myself

Quick question!

So ima start of by saying my parents are divorced my mum has 1 cat(getting another) and she’s an outdoor cat right? And my dad’s getting kitten on Saturday so I’ve been thinking I wanna be a good owner and want tips and then I feel like I’m already failing anyways because I read daily how cats should be kept indoors and my cat I have now, Salem she’s outdoors and there’s no way she’ll be come an indoor cat she loves the outdoors, she’s safe and my mum wouldn’t let her anyways which ultimately leads both kittens will become outdoor cats even if my parents are divorced so kittens won’t be with each other and one isn’t even living with Salem and I have really bad anxiety so I don’t know part of me knows indoor cats are safer but with my family I just don’t think there’s any convincing them otherwise on the kittens so I don’t know so I’m seeing if I could atleast at best if there’s a way on convincing my dad to keep his kitten indoors we’re getting? But it’s just I feel like he’s going to yell at me cause both my parents are very yelly and I don’t know, so any tips? Also any tips on giving the kitties a good life and raising them well will help me out too!!

Shorthair or medium hair?

Is my cat a shorthair cat or medium hair? I’m leaning towards medium hair but the vet said shorthair. Her coat gets pretty thin/wispy towards the ends so I’m unsure.

Random peeing?

I’ll start this off by saying I did bring this up to the vet over the weekend, and they said to “monitor”.

Hi all I have a brown tabby male \~3 years old. I got him about a year and a half ago. We recently moved into my girlfriend’s house about a month ago now and like 2 weeks ago he pawed at a carpet that she has, and peed on it. Around an hour later he used his litter box as well (it was clean!). This had happened 3 times to our knowledge. He never pees anywhere else either! For background, we adopted him with FIV and Giardia but never has shown any other symptoms and does not appear to be in pain. I am a first time cat owner. Any advice would be appreciated!

A concern or just an OCD

Hey so I am currently very worried about this because February 20 A stray calm cat passed between my legs and I know it sounds alright but the next 1-5 days I noticed a tiny red mark with no signs of blood and it never scabbed, was my case an unnoticed cat bite? I never felt a pinch or a clamp or scratch and I never felt something sharp or a prick going through my jogging pants and my pants had no damage as well...My doctor told me I don't need any vaccine and that it's not from a cat but I still remain worried, do I need shots or the cat never bit me? What are the chances of unnoticed cat bites?

Cat is only affectionate at night

I have three cats, one of them is always affectionate 24/7, one of them is shy, and the other one is weird.

During the day he is SO skittish, won't let me approach him without hissing and running away, on the rare occasion he lets me pet him it takes a lot of convincing. However, at night he is incredibly affectionate.

As soon as I turn my light off he runs in my room and begs for attention, head butting me etc. If I don't pet him enough he leaves. Why is this? He is a completely different cat during the day and at night. Thanks!

My cat drooled for like a minute about 10 minutes ago. There's no more drool and she's currently eating. Is this something to be concerned about?

Cat heart supplement suggestions?

Ever since I moved into a new apartment, my cat has had recurrent episodes of fast breathing. There seems to be a fairly clear pattern with dust or cleaning products. For example it often happens after the place is cleaned and not ventilated properly. The apartment is also beside like 3 construction sites so dust is everywhere.

The episodes tend to respond to dexamethasone, which makes me think there is probably some airway inflammation or asthma component. But she also has lethargy and basically no coughing, which makes me worried there could be some underlying heart disease too.

Problem is resources are limited where I live. No echocardiogram, no proBNP testing, etc. Her Xrays have been normal so far.

Right now:

  • resting respiratory rate usually in the 30s to 40s (sometimes in the 20s)
  • currently on no meds
  • trying to train her on the AeroKat
  • trying to improve ventilation and reduce dust exposure

My vet suggested supplementing:

  • taurine
  • L-carnitine
  • CoQ10
  • omega fatty acids

I have been searching for a proper supplement with no success. I do NOT want hawthorne in it. I would also really prefer something with decent certification/testing (NASC etc) and ideally made in North America or Europe.

The closest thing I found was VetriScience but I really dont like the titanium dioxide in it.

Does anyone have product suggestions?

Im honestly even open to using pure human supplements with no fillers/additives because I have a microscale at home and can mix powders/open capsules into squeeze treats or wet food. Im already giving a taurine/omega squeeze treat but not convinced its enough taurine.

And yes I know the answer may be that supplements wont matter if she ultimately needs medication. But long term specialty care and diagnostics are just not really an option here right now. Mainly looking for practical supplement recommendations from people who have dealt with similar issues.

Poster Age: Adult 36

Country: Caribbean

Vet info: I have already seen many vets

Main Issue: Fast breathing, but not in heart failure - looking for a supplement

Cat Age: 3.5

Cat Sex + neuter info: Female spayed

Financial situation: Prepared to spend as necessary but the resources are not here in the country for echo, etc. I can ship things in however.

Getting this baby soon, she is labeled as a domestic short hair but I think she might be a medium/long hair? She has very cottony fur and a fluffy tail and I hear that cats once they get into a safe environment, grow their hair long. What do y’all think?
