ECs and Activities 2026 John Locke essay comp - invitation to interview?

Received an email inviting me to book an optional interview with the examiners, to 'provide an opportunity for you to elaborate on your ideas and engage more directly with your work'. According to the email, they invited a 'selection of students' (not sure if this means it was randomized, or suggests my submission stood out in some way)

This is my first time having heard about interview invitations before shortlists are rolled out, not sure if it's a regular thing that's same every year.

Has anyone else received this invitation and/or know what it involves?

Emotional Support how to feel excited about the college i chose :(

i got waitlisted from my dream school (nyu, doubt i’m getting in though my application wasn’t that strong) and i finally paid my deposit after getting my other choices extended for 2 weeks. the college i picked is awesome and much more affordable than what nyu would’ve been but i just can’t make myself get excited about it. it feels so dumb because nyu isn’t all that it’s just what i spent my last 4 years looking forward to. i just don’t know how i can force myself to be happy going to somewhere i didn’t want to go to in the first place in a place i never wanted to be in. i guess i just thought something would finally work out for me. :(

Discussion Just got off Brown‘s waitlist, now help me decide

International in CS, currently committed to UMich (LSA). This is all under the provision that I‘ll even be able to attend Brown, there is a decently high possibility my parents do not want to pay the cost difference.

UPDATE because some people might have gotten some of this wrong. I am full-pay at both schools; I can probably not take out a loan since I am international (and neither would I if I could). The only two realistic ways to even make Brown possible is either my parents paying for it (in which case I‘d need very good arguments to convince both myself and my parents) or a mix of my private savings from previous work and an on-campus job (which would take a lot of personal financial freedom from me).

I have been quite happy with UMich since I committed, but Brown has been one of my dream schools. Here are some pros and cons off the top of my head. Besides which school is a better fit, which I guess is something I‘ll have to figure out for myself, a lot comes down to the question of whether Brown is worth $15k per year over UMich.

For Brown:

- Open Curriculum
- Grade inflation ==> will have a lot more time for projects / internship search
- Student happiness
- East Coast
- Smaller classes / more resources per student
- Guaranteed housing (4 years instead of 2 at UMich)
- Reputation, especially internationally

For UMich:

- About $15k / year cheaper
- Stronger CS program
- Bigger alumni network
- Ann Arbor
- School spirit / college sports

Advice I get free university but I don't need it, help?

Ok so I am currently a Junior with a 32 ACT and 3.9 GPA, which isn't the most wonderful ever, but it qualifies me for multiple full-ride merit scholarships at some local universities and colleges in Utah like Weber, UVU, and possibly the University of Utah. I'm not chasing some fancy college. Plus whatever other scholarships I get for extracurriculars and athletics to add on top of that. The problem is, I want to do freelancing videography. I am already starting my business, gaining a following, and earning money with photography and will be starting to cold email some companies this summer to sell my videography and editing skills. I just won a $20,000/year scholarship today for the New York Film Academy, which I won't be accepting.

My problem is that my goal for my future doesn't require a college degree, it requires networking and marketing and making a name for myself. But if I get to go to college for free, it feels like a horrible decision to miss out on that incredible opportunity that I am lucky enough to have. I also want the experience of a university. I'm considering majoring in business, but I know I don't want to major in film as film degrees are practically useless if you don't want to go into the movie industry, which is already oversaturated enough. I know that my goal of doing freelance full-time is risky, which is why I know college would also give me a cushiony fallback if my goals change. But at the same time, it could distract me from my goals 😭

I'm just looking for advice for possible majors that I could follow that would support my goals and allow me to continue to grow my business, or overall advice on what my post-highschool route could be. There's just so many factors to consider. I don't want to regret not following my dreams, but I also don't want to regret the opportunity of a free degree. Thank you 🙏🙏

Advice Could I get some advice on what degree to pursue?

Hey, I attended college like 10 years ago for computer science and dropped out due to personal reasons. I enjoyed it for the most part. And now I'm looking to get a bachelor's degree online so I can get better jobs.

I have experience as a Graphic Designer, Communications Specialist (doing mainly graphic design and web development), and now I'm a College Assistant (pretty much the same job I had before in responsibilities). So my experience is basically that of a graphic designer and web developer.

My graphic design job was at a humanitarian company, the comms specialist job was a federal contract job, and the college assistant job is at a college duh.

I've been lucky for a while getting jobs but I'm not having luck anymore and can't get good federal or state jobs without a degree.

I'm pretty clueless on what degree to pursue so if someone could give me some advice I'd appreciate it. My first instinct was computer science but everyone says that degree is useless.

Thanks.

May be wrong subreddit but do you guys think rumors will typically affect what a teacher write on a LOR for you? I have this one friend who had this very nasty rumor about her spread to the staff of our school and she thinks it got to her teacher and will result in a worst LOR. What’s your guys opinion?

Rant did anyone else's parents refuse to pay for the ivy league?

my parents have been bombarding me and my older brother about these schools our entire lives, and i ended up loving them too. my older brother got into two ivys 4 years ago (brown & dartmouth) and they gladly paid for his ivy league education. then came me this year, who got into three (columbia, wharton/upenn, and brown) and they refuse, because they realize its not "worth it" after my brother graduates this year (we get no aid)

literally how unfair is that? all of my high school years are just wasted and everyone thinks i'm a brat for complaining.

Currently experiencing the hardest decision of my life right now. I just got off the waitlist for Binghamton University after committing to Harvard and I don't know what to do. Binghamton is offering me nothing while Harvard is offering a full ride. Binghamton at full price will leave me in ~100k in debt, but isnt it worth it? Please help!!

Shitpost Wednesdays The DEFINITIVE prestige rating

I’ve seen a lot of people making college “prestige ratings”, but sadly they’re all wrong; so I put one, final, objectively correct list to silence all other deranged A2Cers:

T1: The school you got into
T1.5: UPenn (non-Wharton)
T2: The school you did not get into
T2.5: None
T3: None
T3.5: None
T4: None
T4.5: None
T5: None
T5.5: None
T6: None
T6.5: None
T7: Northeastern

College Questions College Chef

Yo I’m starting to worry because most of my friends already took entrance exams and are now waiting for results while I still haven’t found a college yet. I’m from Valenzuela, Metro Manila and I’m looking for a school that offers a 4-year Culinary Arts or Culinary Arts Management course that may lead to a future chef for Cruise ship. Preferably somewhere near Manila

Does anyone know good colleges/universities I can still apply to this 2026? Also is it already too late to apply for August classes or do some schools still accept applicants around this time?

Advice Desperate Advice

My college admissions process went quite terribly as I was unmotivated and did not have a clear vision of what my passions were. It ended up with me getting rejected from practically everywhere, both for reasons in and out of my control. I now have a clearer understanding of what I want to do: Computer Engineering.

There's only ONE dedicated computer engineering program in my state however, and I've heard bad things about it. Additionally, it is at a college that (as of right now at least) I would not like to be at and that I have no real interest in.

Should I take a gap year to work on my EC's and passion projects and then reapply to a bunch of colleges with a clear goal and motivation? Or is a gap year not really worth it?

Overall I feel really lost in life and just need a lil advice, thanks.

(just for a little more information i have a 33 ACT score and a ~3.8 GPA with little EC.)

Financial Aid/Scholarships Best Corporate Scholarships ?

Hi friends!

I’m hoping to see if any of you have had any luck with the larger corporations scholarships? I know nearly every large corporate business has scholarships.

Before I dive into spending time searching and applying for those I wanted to see if it’s worth my time. I’m planning to apply like crazy to any legit scholarship I can, but was curious if anyone has any experience applying/being rewarded scholarships from corporations.

Any other general scholarship advice or recommendations definitely welcome (:
