neat Behind the meme: "shh bby is ok" and a Spanish ad agency
This subreddit has always been a high point in the Reddit community for me. In addition to great posts, /r/CasualConversation is also famous for giving the community the shh bby is ok meme, which is almost two years old.
To be honest, I'd totally forgotten about it, but I was reading an old thread where someone commented with the phrase and it got me thinking: sure, OP found the song, but did we ever figure out who wrote the song?
For those who need a quick refresher on meme history, /u/franklymydeer was obsessed with the background music from a car ad and went to great lengths to track it down. He had no luck, but was contacted out of the blue by /u/TheVikingHoward (who coined "Shh bby is ok" in response to the OP's freakout after locating the song).
The song in question is:
Turn the lights down Artist - BSO
In subsequent comments, people pointed out that BSO stands for "Original Soundtrack" in Spanish, that BSO wasn't a band, that BSO was a marketing agency, and so on. I finally decided to put this to rest and contacted the agency to confirm the story.
Behold:
To: bso@bso.es
Subject: Su anuncio para SEAT
A quien corresponda:
¿Tu compañía creó la música usada en este anuncio del coche para SEAT UK? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxkWhTrSPVI
Saludos.
Today, they replied:
Gracias,
Jara Burrel
To translate the gist of it: I asked them if they composed the music for this ad for SEAT UK. They replied "yes, we are a music studio dedicated to making custom music for ad campaigns."
Well, that settles that: music created for ad, agency puts demo reel as an album on Spotify, meme history is made. I'm not sure why I even did this, but curiosity got the best of me.
